  1. I've heard from a cyclist:

    10:1 road bike to running

    5:1 mountain bike to running

I don't know about the fixie, but that's a really long ride on a fixie! So hipster you are :nana:

I'm late to this thread. Competitive cyclist here. It's tough to compare running to biking miles, intensity is #1. Running is always better bang for buck calorie wise, but running sucks. A lot of guys use fixies (track bikes) in the winter to maintain fitness, build leg strength, and burn calories in zone 2-3. They are fun and beautiful to look at, hence the hipster love, but probably not a good spot for a new cyclist to start. FWIW Western NY/Finger Lakes provides some of the best cycling on the planet in my opinion. Tons of roads, wide safe shoulders, varying terrain, scenic.

D4rk if you are spinning out your 53x14 on flat roads you need to get yourself to France. The best amateur racers I know will TT at 26-28mph for 30-60 minutes in 53x16/15. Cadence should be 80-100/minute. Think "fast feet", no mashing.

For motivation - 1 - goal setting - pick a race or charity ride 3 months out and use that deadline to get yourself out of bed. 2 - technology - STRAVA is a fantastic free GPS based app for droid/iphone (or garmin) that times you over user created segments. You can compare your times to other users or just yourself. Makes it fun to have mini-goals during a workout like set a best time on a hill or over a certain segment of the canal path, etc.

  2. I full expect the Bruins to try to hurt Subban in this series. It would certainly appease all their racist fans.

This story is so annoying. I see this article http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2014/05/02/boston-strong-racist-reaction-after-subban-scores-game-winner/ the dude went and looked for tweets and found 12 of them? Are they all from the same guy? Why not include the account? Garbage.

I don't doubt there's some racist Bruins fans, but I bet it's an extremely small percentage, same as the # of racist Sabres fans, Leafs fans, etc.

  3. Great game by price. Wow. And Vanek was invisible. He better get it in gear if he's going to have 5 goals by the time he gets two handed by Lucic.

Vanek's ice time was low from the outset. Only 4 shifts for a total of 3 minutes of ice in 2nd. Briere too, but more to be expected there. Maybe Ink's theory is right and Theirien wants to save him until later in the series if/when things settle down. He did not look confident. Go Habs!

  4. No. I think he would have made a return to Buffalo at some point if he hadn't gotten injured. His game is fine if he would just remove some of the dumbass plays of cross checking and such. I think Buffalo has room on its 3rd or 4th line for him.

Agreed on the dumbassery. I wonder if there's room though given the glut of 3rd and 4th liners. I'd expect Nolan or Pegula or someone is going to have to go to bat for him. TM is probably like "meh". Looks like he's signed through next season though, maybe they bury in ROC.

  5. Risto went hard into boards in first, awkward. Looked like he hit his head. Went to locker room, then returned in 2nd. He looked pretty lost on the 2nd chi goal.

Grigerenko face off percentage looked good. And overall he looked solid. Larsson and Armia too.

Tim Murray was walking amongst the people during 3rd intermission. We got to say hello.

    Tough loss.

  6. Nolan must coach them to be soft.

Seriously, though, what were they to do about Rinaldo? He was tossed an instant after the play happened. I didn't watch much of the game, so I can't comment on the being pushed around all night bit.

Nolan did publicly nail Weber for a cross check last week didn't he? I think they were on the PK. Nolan said something like "dumb time to do that, wtf". If Weber thought he was justified in doing so, then Nolan calls him out publicly....just saying.

I think the problem is as others have stated, end of season, hodgepodge of kids / NHL bubble players, not exactly a tightly bonded bunch of brothers in the room. And I think it will be corrected in about 6 months once GMTM puts his roster on the ice.

  7.

This Lieuwen kid is likable, that's a hell of an interview. And it's fun to cheer "louuuuuu" at the game. Next Biron?

I'm buying the Leino / mental health theory. It's gotta suck. Good stuff last night for him and as has been said, so impressive the crowd responded the way they did.

And Jagr is awesome. Rookie year 90-91. Current Sabres players who were born in 90 or later:

Myers, Hodgson, Hackett, Ruhwedel, Deslauriers, Lieuwen, Foligno, Larsson, Girgensons, Ristolainen.

  8. So stuff is all booked now. I fly into Toronto on the 27th Jul, collect the car from Rochester on the 31st Jul, drive to Orlando and drop the car off on the 27th Aug.

Is there an easy way to get from a) Toronto - Rochester or b) Buffalo - Rochester, which does not involve a car?

Basically I am staying with my friends gf's parents and I am not sure they will drive us to Rochester, so it would be great if I knew another easy way. I need to collect the car at 11am

Well...there was this Mayor in Rochester years ago, Bill Johnson was his name, and....

Train service might work for you http://www.amtrak.com/home

    Sounds like an awesome trip.

  9. Anyone hear any news or updates on the contract situation? It seems with each passing day, Teddy's leaning towards leaving. But leaving for what? I don't like the little value he's placing on being an NHL head coach.

He and GMTM are probably having a nice lunch right now at a beachside resort in Ft Lauderdale. Latest from Weds was that TM was headed to FL to hang with him for a few days and talk it out. From the TB segment on WGR it sounds like they have barely hung out up to this point. Quite a contrast to BFFs DR and LR. I was a noob Sabres fan (just opening my eyes to the NHL) during TN's last stint with us, and have my doubts about the "us against the world" strategy, but his results over the past few months are impressive. I'm in.

  10. I love this guy's way of communicating with the press, straightforward with good honest answers. I hope to see his lighter-side come out like it did more in the post-deadline conference. Best of all he shows passion, something DR rarely if ever showed. If Lafontaine and Murray had any problems, it would of have to of been on the fact they are both very passionate for what they feel is right.

Yes! The passion. "you know me I can't really enjoy things, I try to...". The fact that he's been on the road, still scouting. Mad scientist like. Obsessed. Love it.

Though Black on WGR said he needs to spend time with TN now (this week). Sounds like that will be his biggest challenge, the other responsibilities of the job (relationship with coach, etc). If he and TN build trust I'm very bullish on the future.
