  1. I went with Ennis for #1. I liked his play 2nd half of last year, he's skilled, he's fast, he plays with moxy. With the old core completely gone now, plus the addition of Gionta to prop him up, I like his chances.

#2 - Myers. Make or break on "elite" player. If he plays like an all-star....tank be damned.

#3 - Girgs. Love his game, simple as that.

Good call on the non-tank thread!

  2. Then there is this as well..

    Andy Strickland@andystrickland 27m

@JoeYerdonPHT or the World junior evaluation camp. Shouldn't be in Lake Placid, Buffalo rumored destination

Yerdon did respond that there would be USA Hockey Reps coming as well

I happened to be in the ADKs a couple of weeks ago and dropped in for a bit of USA vs Sweden. We expected to see them on the main sheet and I assumed there might be a nominal ticket charge and maybe 1000 people. Instead they were playing out back on the 3rd rink painted for curling. There were maybe 200 people there, 100 of us that weren't scouts or suit-types, all crowded around the glass. 0 bleacher seating. Cost was $0. The player benches were very short and with the bigger rosters it looked the NYC subway in rush hour. I suppose it's an exhibition game, but both teams are flying their official colors. I think if it was in Buffalo (or Minn?) people would show up for the feature events. Harbor Center looks like it would be perfect for this. Oh and we talked to one other group of fans there....yup, also Sabres fans.

  3. Laundering 76 Million Dolllars - is that lame too?

That dry cleaner on Fairport Rd that's listed isn't THAT busy. My interpretation was that the $76m is over the course of the investigation, if so thats 12-15 months so about $5m per month. Or more likely figure it's heavy in late January, so maybe a slow month is 1-2M and January is $40m? If they were networked into a bunch of pro athletes I could see it. $100k here, $50k there on superbowl would add up nicely.

So what's the over/under on whether he bet on the Sabres?

Ink young Parinnello (who is representing a Ruff) told Breen yesterday that hockey betting is not involved, but it was pretty soft statement. "to the best of my knowledge..." or something like that (can't find the link).

  4. A prior report on the arrest of the suspects stated as follows:

"The trio used multiple offshore Internet gambling websites to run their illegal business since January 2012, said the news release from the office of William Hochul, U.S. attorney for western New York. Authorities allege that the men gave gamblers an account and password that allowed them to place wagers on sporting events.

The websites provided the spread and tallied the total won or lost by bettors, and cash payments were made later to settle wagers, according to the release."

So, it seems possible that TV could also be a witness because he was wagering on sporting events?

I still think a likely connection is Paestch, who may've asked Vanek to bank roll start-up/operations at some point. Then again, there's been no talk of Paestch being involved as a witness.

My guess is Vanek's bets were likely larger than any of their 100s(?) of customers by a decimal point or two, so Feds call him in as a witness to help their case, rather than 20 guys betting $500. Sucks for him.

  5. He at least gives solid effort most of the time. Of Hodgson, Myers and Ennis....I'm most comfortable that Ennis comes closest to earning his entire contract.

I like the effort too. He seemed to really respond to Nolan and get after it, problem is his production was still pretty lame. Better teammates should help. Also from the limited exposure we have to his personality, he seems like a good dude / teammate to have (goofy interview series from a couple years ago, though I still don't get that sport goods store commercial).

  6.

Funny stuff at the show last night. Between the opening act and the main event the lady standing next to me elbowed me, pointed at the stage, and asked "is that a drug dog working on stage?". Sure enough, there was an LEO and a police dog sniffing out all of the equipment. We exchanged you gotta be kinding me's and I have never seen that before's. Then, the LEO and the dog began working the pit and the area around the front of the stage. Another round of you gotta be kidding me's and it hit me that I am with two 17 yr old boys, one of whom I don't know real well. I suppose this is as good a time as any to have another father - son conversation so I walked over to the boys and said, "you two see the dog sniffing the crowd, right? I don't want any surprises. If there is something I should be concerned about I need to know now so we can deal with it before that dog gets wind of it". Both boys said they had nothing and I returned with "if you do, you don't want that dog to find it". They said no and I was satisfied that they were being honest.

The lady next to me asked a security guard what was up and he said it was an explosives sniffing dog. he said that every tour in the United States now has an explosives sniffing dog assigned to the tour. Huh.

The dogs checked the stage, the pit, and under the stage. It's good to know that the band was protected, but the crowd wasn't. :P

Nuts. Explosive sniffing? Aren't there supposed to be explosives on stage at a MegaDeth show?

Cool that you took your son and extra points that he was smart enough to smoke up before hand! :P I had that show penciled in, but we did the scrimmage instead. Phish was at CMAC last night too. Blah to all the "well there is nothing else to do" goofs, in response to 8.5k at the scrimmage.

  7.

Who stood out? Nolan, Murray, Devine and a whole bunch of scouts sitting in the club level. Nolan was like a rock star sitting in the last row and people just lining up for pictures. I'm guessing at some point GMTM said knock that ###### off as by the third they were more protected and doing pics.

GMTM was GMTM focused on the roster sheet and his phone. Our club level as this group sitting there emphasizes gives a great vantage point to watch the game. I love mine and it's in a corner.

Heh yeah we got there a few minutes late, went to 200s. Place is packed, find section with lots of empty seats, roll up, oops, guess we aren't sitting here! (roped off for staff)

I loved that Murray was sitting there solo with no one within 3 or 4 seats of him while others were clustered up. Crazy man like. Don't talk to me.

  8. I'm no GMTM, but I liked Compher giving it to Grigs. If I had to bet I'd say Grigs will be a bust. He pushed back a little but mostly just seemed annoyed. Like Vanek in that respect. Hopefully he lights up the A next Oct /Nov and can contribute /gain respect.

I thought Zadarov looked slow and a step behind the play in his own end. He stood a couple guys up nicely, but at his worst I had a Joe Finley flashback. Still a year off from regular nhl duty?

Agreed on Armia looking comfortable and in control. First call up?

Lemiux looked good too in this group, skating and chirping and making guys nervous.

The size of the crowd was redonk. The lack of respect for the whistle was equally redonk. Not sure what people were thinking there. No ushers, woohoo!

  9. The Hipsterfication of America. I've seen several yutes lately wearing dark mid-height socks and "athletic" sandals. I wish those kids would get off my lawn.

And at $18 a pair for the "right" socks to be cool in middle school. (with left foot / right foot formed/labeled!) They say Lacrosse bros started it. It's out of hand.

  10. Two things on this:

    1. Remember Kim is from Fairport, FHS '87. Inkman is '89. I don't know if that means anything but it gives me some comfort.

    2. If it were Darcy I might be worried. GMTM is working on his magnus opus. No guarantees of course, but this is his moment, he's not going to be derailed by Terry or Kim or the pasta guy. Trust.

  11. If Darcy Regier had bought out Ehrhoff and received nothing in return for an asset, this board would be ablaze with comments ripping Regier for mismanaging an important asset. However, if Tim Murray mismanages an important asset, he is praised as a conquering hero!

Enjoy your honeymoon Mr. Murray. Someday the jackals will be at your door.

It's a good point, but if Darcy did it he would have presented it like a puss with excuses or spin. GMTM did it like a boss, with confidence and ready to take on anyone questioning it. "yup, we could of done that. we didn't. next?" Good stuff.

  12. I think I agree with the idea that Murray is planning on making Myers the big man on defense, but I hope he doesn't plan on making a sweeping judgment of any players based on this upcoming season.

Solid endorsement (unsolicited I believe) for Myers on GMTM's HH appearance this AM. Maybe he's trying to drive up the price, but he laughed off the offers of a late first round pick for Myers (or Foligno) and said they are guys he likes and is planning to build around.

  13. It's an incomplete Myers thread without a Chara comparison. I'm in the "there's still potential to be a dominant #1" camp. Don't do it! If on the other hand Nolan and Murray think he's too mental to fix (confidence / IQ / desire), then so be it, trade-away.

  14. I think the most interesting part of that interview is Murray telling an 18 year old kid that if he picks him he wants him joining the rush and getting up ice.

Most rookies are asked to play safe and learn. Murray is interested in him getting up ice and making mistakes.

I don't think Ekblad is there at 2, but if he's there take him.

The most interesting part to me as the parent of a 12 year old boy was the poise and maturity of this kid. That's an intimidating setting. Well done, and props to his parents.

edit - just watched the Murray WGRZ interview - I guess he was not impressed! "had all year to prepare" "agent preps them". Awesome, loving GMTM.
