  1. More from ROR

"It's frustrating, not what you want," O'Reilly said Monday on a conference call with reporters who cover the Blues and Sabres. "I love that city and love those guys on that team. I think they're a team that's very close too. There's a lot of good pieces. It will be interesting to see what will happen with them.

Obviously I'm disappointed. I wanted to be better and win there. It didn't happen and changes were made. Definitely I think they're in good hands and there's some great things to come there."

It's disappointing to see that I wasn't a guy, a piece that could help," O'Reilly said of the Sabres. "But with that, I'm more excited there's another team that wants me ... a team that's got a ton of good pieces and is trying to win right now. That's what I want to be a part of.

That's just the way the game goes. I don't know if it was my comments at the end of the year that got it rolling. But when your team finishes in last place, you expects changes to happen and I think they want to go younger."

    Sounds familiar

    re: Landeskog being named C

"I don't think I was ready for that role at the time. Landy excelled right away at the role, and I think he deserved it, for sure," O'Reilly said. "He's a leader and does everything right. I wasn't very vocal at that time, a little unsure of what to say. But now, I feel I've gotten more to that level in this room."

"Since Day 1, we just always had our [business] issues," O'Reilly said. "But I think the thing is, I did want a bigger role there, and in Buffalo, that's what I got. I have a bigger role here, a bigger voice, which is nice to have. I'm happy with the change. The fans and people in Colorado were phenomenal, and I have a lot of good relationships with a lot of their players still, but now that I have longer-term security and stuff, I can just focus on hockey, and it's easier to lead, to not get asked questions about contract stuff all the time."

Kinda sad actually.  Being that hard on himself with press is telling. Dude needs to accept that he's not alpha and just do his job.  Talented player.  Don't think we are going to miss him though.  Two penalty minutes for the entire season.  "just skating around out there." That's unbelievable for the amount of minutes and his role.

  2. My two cents:

The Sabres were worst in the NHL last year. Everybody should be expendable except Eichel an Mittelstadt. . Don't forget that ROR was the ostensible leader on that team, given his ages, status, and experience. Well, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. His leadership failed miserably. He disappeared for games at a time, and his attitude got old.

While I don't love any of the players we got in return, they are at least NHL quality. The team needed an overhaul. Might as well embrace change.

Yup. Didn't he have 0 penalty minutes last year? "I'm just skating around out there" See ya! Good job jbot, get what you can and move on.

For the angry folks - think Las Vegas. It's about the team.

  3. Because I was a Sabres fan my whole life and Still a Sabres fan but I no longer live there so what does that mean I can’t have 2 teams. Give me a break! For years I was posting on here about Sabres Hockey. It’s not my fault they are run by inept people all these years. Do I still like them? Of course and I’m essatic that they will be able to draft Dahlin. I’m a big believer that Buffalo fans deserve much better then what is being given to them each year. We all know that Buffalo is starving for a Championship no matter which comes first. I would much rather have the Sabres because that is what I was into when I lived there. ###### My Aunt was a season seat holder from inaugural season till 1995. We still both love them. Let’s face it these last few years their weren’t many great Sabres games to watch. I even went to Anaheim this year and at least they won the game I went to. They have been hard to watch for me plus I also work till 7pm most nights and by the time I get home they are already done. So what I love the Knights now that we have our own team here now. I mean come on nobody and I mean nobody seen this coming. Everyone thought they would be bottom 5-10 even myself. But the more the season went on you watch these guys and they really are a true team. Every player plays and every player contributes. Look today Reeves scores his first goal for the Knights today. Unbelievable what the sports World is seeing. So stop being bitter about it.

I appreciate you.  Sad some Sabres fans are so wrecked they can't enjoy this, arguably one of the best pro sports stories in decades.  If they win it all it's gonna blow up outside the NHL I think, legendary.

  4. Tell me about it I was there tonight and will be there on Friday. It’s been electric at T Mobile.

Was there too in Hyde section. Awesome. And all the locals I talked to were humble. Just great. A couple even brought up the October tragedy and what this means to them / the community.

Can't wait for Sabres experience to be even half of this (again). If KP hasn't been she should. Not just the extra pregame, they are nailing it start to finish.

  5. If he's an unmanageable problem in the room, goodbye. It's risky, but I think less risky than keeping a Debbie Downer around (if that's what he is) especially when he's supposed to be one of your franchise guys w/ respect to role (top 2 Center) and compensation.

Hopefully w/ the new talent and a "C" on Eichel they get off to a great start in Oct.  ROR can do his thing on the ice while the kids light it up, and we can enjoy some Ws.

I have full faith in JBot to make it happen.  Disclosure: I had full faith in GMTM too.

  6. Will the Pens be able to afford Guenztal? Any chance Botteril could make a deal to bring him over here?

They can make space if they trade us Malkin for Reinhart+Risto and a pick!

Seriously though, I wonder if either Malkin or Crosby would be interested in a change of scenery just to mix it up before they start their downward trend. No evidence to support it, they seem to be all happy there, just wonder.

  7.

Vegas First of all, I hate the name.  The city is "Las Vegas," not "Vegas."  It's not the "Frisco 49ers" or the "Big Apple Yankees."  So I don't like the name.  Second, the expansion draft was WAY skewed in "Vegas's" favor.  Too much.  Expansion teams shouldn't be winning Stanley Cups, and their new fans haven't suffered enough yet.

    So ###### 'em all.

Wow.  Had to double check that it wasn't Thursday.

Anyways the bold we can agree on.  Hate it.

  8. So, is the "mopey" attitude based solely on his locker clean out presser?  I don't think he's an overly outspoken guy.

I have however seen him play irritated and put the team on his back at times.  That's good enough for me.

Oh.. and you get a pass (just a bit) for being under bourbon influence.  :)

Through-out the course of the season he had a bunch of them in post-games "i'm just skating around out there, not good enough".  I thought he did a nice job summarizing it at clean-out with the "lost the love" comment.

Howard Simon has the same thing to say here:  http://www.wgr550.com/articles/opinion/oreilly-needs-suck-it

Ideally the new young core (15+23+Mlltdst+Dahlin) dominates in Oct and O'Reilly can keep to himself and nicely do his thing on the ice. But again if he's moping in the locker room I don't want him around those 2 new pieces.

  9. Far too emotional evaluation.

There are guys in Vegas who gaffe.  There are guys everywhere who do it.

If ROR is the problem, he will be moved.  However, he's a critical piece of the pie for any team.  He's supremely talented.  As I see it, for ROR to move another team is going to have to give up the house or take on Bogosian's salary and I don't know that the Sabres need to clear his numbers from the books right now.

Bourbon induced post with a touch of homer re: Tuch, but with the numerous "i'm just skating around there" comments, I think at this point he's proven he's not a leader nor a critical piece. Instead he's pulling down his team with his mopey attitude, despite the talent / decent production.  Hopefully JBot can leverage the data and get a good return, but won't be shocked if it's underwhelming.

  10. This team finished DFL, they better identify why and do something about it.

Right and if Oreilly being an emo is the problem, then goodbye.  Up thread does a nice job detailing his value stats wise, but let's say he's instead a leader with contagious energy and a positive attitude, how does that impact the team? 10 more goals?  20 more goals?  I think we led the league in 1 goal losses. Freaking guy took one penalty all year. What a joke. I watch Vegas and wonder where O'Reilly fits with that group.  Also he was trash the 2 games I saw in Buffalo this year, terrible passing through the neutral zone like he didn't gaf.  Show me one guy on Las Vegas who doesn't gaf.  At this point I'd do O'Reilly for Tuch straight up.  I know C vs RW but still.

  11. Goathead years are where all my favorites are too. I'm surprised no love for Barnaby or Warrener thus far.  But if I had to pick one it's Mike Robitaille. Never saw him play, but he was instrumental to the broadcast team and brand when my love for the team began in the mid-90s. Hockey Hotline with Brian Blessing, intermission analysis, post-game summary/drama, etc.  Great story teller, decent person, seems to love and respect the sport and Buffalo/WNY.

  12. Kane v Carrier almost.

One thing I've noticed:  They no longer call it a "wraparound".  Now it seems like it's being called a "power move."  When did that change?

Ha. Michelliti?  Power move! x 25.  Still better than Doc & Pierre.

  13. It's all coming from one guy

Edit: How the hell can that dude continue to spew ###### but we get banned for posting youtube links?

Ooof.  That's describing culture of front office?   .

Lost in this conversation is the part where Brandon lied to his boss when confronted.  Lying to the owner of the business and getting caught in the lie takes even a simple everyday affair into another realm.

Good point. Just read that.  Also unlikely it was just a single affair if he's denying to his trusted/good relationship boss for however many years it's been.

  14. Why do I see Conan's Jordan Schlansky when I see Russ?

If there are victims, they should be shown compassion. I have no issue with the spirit of Jo's post.

100% same.  Need more detail.  I trust TP/KP but again their statement is destructive.  If it was just an affair, it's over the top. If it was complete dick-head power move(s) "do you know who I am" , f him.

re: TBD, can anyone summarize?  I can't do that board.

  15. I'm aware it happens. It's playing with serious fire, particularly when you are someone with as much power in the organization as Russ Brandon.  It's colossally stupid and indicative of the level of arrogance that Brandon had to apparently engage in MULTIPLE affairs with employees thinking nothing would ever come of it.

I hear ya. Agree, not cool especially if married. But still want details. Pegula statement is harsh so assuming it's bad.  But still holding a little bit of reservation because of their seemingly more aggressive "faith" thing.

  16. Not single.

Ah.  Well, then feel the wrath of Fx3.

Happy to see him out.  Never liked him other than the Roc/Fisher/Red Wings, worked-his-way-up, angle.  Seems sketchy, yes-man, opposite of GMTM.

First Ritchie then Russ?  Perhaps Shady isn't a good judge of character.  Or perhaps Russ was his wingman.

and when you are President of an organization there is no "hooking up with co-workers", it goes well beyond unprofessional.

On paper.  Then there's reality.  Happens all the time.

  17. Interested in details.  If he's single and just hooking up with co-workers (or a radio personality?), big deal.  Not professional especially for someone at that level, but implied character assassination by Pegula's seems a bit harsh.  On the other hand if it's me-too-esque, yeah, go away and suffer.
