I would have rather paid the bonus and got another NHL ready piece back.
Can't disagree. But I think we needed the quantity in this trade. If it means no Larsson on opening night, I'm good with it.
-
I'd agree that the trade would be worse if we paid the bonus. Money does mean something even if pegula is rich
I guess that's all I've been trying to say. Just too many Canada Day brews.
-
No, you claimed we were saving money. How? We're basically paying the same accept to 2 players instead of 1.
Fair. Redirected is probably a better way to put it.
But still, the fact that they picked up the bonus is big, at least IMO.
-
What? Idk what this even means.
The Sabres saved $7.5M in overall spending money today by getting rid of ROR's bonus. They brought in close to the same amount in salaries in the trade.
-
Who pays the bonus is irrelevant to the cap. The Blues get the cap hit either way
Not looking at it from a cap perspective. He was asking why we should care about STL picking up ROR's bonus. I know it doesn't affect the salary cap.
-
We aren't. The two players we got cost 7.2 mil and change.
And they're "affordable" thanks to STL picking up ROR's bonus.
-
In actuality, I don't care that much. But the Pegulas definitely have a budget on their operation costs. As does every owner in the league. Why do you as a fan care that Terry Pegula has to pay money that doesn't affect the cap and therefore your fandom at all
Unless of course it did affect the cap
No one knows what it is, but if we're getting $7.5M off of that budget, that's going on the "pro" side of the Venn diagram.
-
How?
Because money? Budgets? Things that normal businesses pay attention to?
-
Why do we care about the bonus though? Isn't that just all Pegulas money?
When it's $7.5M, that can affect future contracts. It's not nothing.

This trade tells me the goal now I just to make the playoffs, not contend for a Cup. The new roster reeks of perpetual 10th-7th place finishes and middling draft picks.
This isn't the new roster. There is plenty of time.
Also, I'll take 10th place in a heartbeat!
-
Berglund and Sabotka are feckless. Won't make any difference. Tage sounds like a slightly more talented gaustad. And nhl draft picks are a roll of the dice. I'll Be surprised if in 5 years the Sabres have anything tangible from this trade.
Well I guess we'll see where ROR is then, too.
I definitely wanted a Kyrou or better in this deal, but if we got two guys who scored double digits last year plus a 20 year Thompson and two high picks... That's actually pretty solid, guys.
-
Love the deal. That's 5 legitimate pieces for O'Reilly, and they covered his tab.
Awesome. I don't understand the depressing atmosphere here. That's a solid haul.
-
I would absolutely love grabner on a short term deal.
A speedy, veteran LW who can score goals. Yes, please.
-
Apparently home openers leaking out..
It was by plan - NHL.com has the full list. The rest of the schedule releases tomorrow.
-
FWIW, Rangers smoked the Bruins tonight, 6-1, in Boston.
Not sure how that will affect tomorrow night's game.
The B's d-men really left the goalies out to dry tonight. Toivonen replaced Thomas and both played at about the same level (Thomas - 3 G on 15 shots; Toivonen - 3 G on 14 shots). Hannu was supposed to get the start in Buffalo according to the press. So if we throw in a mixed up goalie situation, a bad loss, late night travel, second game in 2 nights, the B's total defensive performance, and Corp's personal guarentee for victory, I think this could be a great setup for bounce back game at home. Then again, I've been proven wrong in most of those situations, except the last. :)

From today's Buffalo News...
Left wing Jochen Hecht, sidelined since suffering a lower-body injury Jan. 15 in Boston, will be in the lineup against Columbus. Also,
Tallinder is 50-50 and Novotny is out. No word on who will get called up among Paille, MacArthur, and Stafford. IMHO, Paille has been playing better hockey than a few of our regulars and needs to stay up for good.
-
It was Niinimaa who said it earlier.
...and we shut him up.
-
...and we win. Thanks to Ryan Miller, who finally put his demons behind him and played a solid game against the Red Wings.
-
2 things:
1. How are we tied in this game?
2. Does anyone else have a sudden feeling of optimism about the uniforms everytime the announcer says the sabres are changing? Maybe it's the beer....
-
Let's worry about beating Ottawa first.
Shouldn't we worry about losing to them? ;)
GO SABRES!
-
15-9 now.....really starting to get into this team....
Whats the latest on Briere?
Looking worse on Briere. Could be a sports hernia requiring surgery similiar to McNabb's injury.
-
Another hard fought win with guys stepping it up when they had to. Imagine this team when (if) they get Briere and Dumont back. :D
-
these fsn pittsburgh guys suck... we're all very lucky to have had rick jennerette and ted darling as our announcers for the past 35 years.
Amen! I can't take it!
When did Derek Roy become related to Patrick?
Lots of injuries to report for Buffalo, yet they completely fail to mention Ryan Miller, who is the team's starting goalie.
You'd think M.A. Fleury was the best goalie in the league, and not just called up from the minors dues to struggles with T-Bo.
Plenty of missed action and just poor announcing with the same old cliches. No excitement either.
Goose just scored, 2-1 Buffalo. :D :D :D

Did anyone notice how Marty lost his stick on the goal? He stops that if he has the stick.
His stick saved him on the shot from Crosby on the 2-on-1. Call it lucky or whatever, but man that was beautiful.
