Meh. James Neal was a far more seasoned player when he came over to Pittsburgh last year and he did very little there. This year, he's only got 30G, 65P in 68GP, and was just given a 5 year, $30 million contract.
It does take time to learn your teammates, especially for skill players. Add to that, the extreme travel log and the increased ice time (prior to last night), and it's not too surprising that he's not producing yet. He's basically a rookie, who hasn't really practiced with his team. The raw skill is there, you can see it at times, but he wasn't brought in to be the solution this year; he was brought in to hopefully be a long-run solution. I'd like to see him produce on this stretch run, but next year is when I'd actually expect to see production. It's not a TSC vs. SAK things, but rather the realization of what they really traded for (basically, a prospect) and the realities of deadline deals.

The core is horrible BECAUSE Ruff is a horrible coach. Just look at all the posts referencing all the great success that every player that leaves Buffalo goes on to have. But what really drives the point home is that players like Malkin, Crosby, Ovechkin or any superstar in league history never would have had success if they played for Ruff. Simple.

Nope....Kassian is way too young and hasn't been around the Sabres long enough to be ruined for life. That's why I am so excited to see this progression. If Kassian fails, it isn't on Ruff and the Sabres.

This will be the first true power forward who started in Buffalo and got out before the age most guys hit the NHL.
By that same token, if he's successful, isn't it too early to say that he wouldn't have been equally successful here?

Oooo my favorite stat! I think Stafford has about 50 CGs so far this year (Coulda Goals).
At least with a CA, it's somebody else who kept it from being an A. Stafford turned his own G into a CG.

that people have to bash Kasian....a 20yo big body.....for being some sort of failure, when in actuality his career has started out much better than Hodgson, even being a year younger.
Kassian has 322 TOI this season, recording 3G and 4A. In his first 322 minutes TOI, Hodgson had 4G 4A. :nana:

Panthers are reportedly looking for second-line scoring. Perhaps, if they Sabres continue to fall, they should look at a deal like Stafford and a 1st or 2nd for one of their prospect centers like Jonathan Huberdeau or Nick Bjugstad. Huberdeau's got great skill, while Bjugstad is a big two-way center. Probably won't get Huberdeau's, even if the Sabres are looking like they'll have a high 1st-round pick this summer, but I wouldn't hurt to ask. He'll be NHL-ready next season.

I have to admit that I'm more of beer snob in the cold months than in the summer. Don't get me wrong, I like the higher quality summer brews (mostly from Germany and Belgium), but when it's hot, as long as it's in a bottle (I generally hate beer from a can), my standards are a lot lower. Genny Cream Ale is a very good example of that. I've also recently tried some cold Genny Light bottles and was pleasantly surprised. It definitely has a better flavor than most mass-market lights. Another favorite in the summer is Session Lager. Tastes pretty good an stubby bottles are always fun ... did somebody say Red Stripe?
In the winter, I'm generally drinking German dunkel (hefe) weiss (a.k.a. Dunkelweizne), porters, or occasionally stouts. There are several brands in each category that I will rotate through.
Another category that I like or Schwarzbiers (black beers); dark color but with a light body and flavor characterized by more of hint of malt than an overwhelmingly heavy amount.

As far as getting started, stick with a lighter whisky. The Canadians are smooth. If Scotch, Macallan 12, Highland Park 12. I would avoid the smokey single malts (Islay), although my wife says they taste like bacon and will sip off my glass. There are some serious Bourbon men on this board, I defer to their expertise on that.
Aw, I was going to recommend Talisker, too. It burns so good. :thumbsup:
(I also have a bottle of Bruichladdich Infinity, which is quite nice.)
@ Orange Seats: a blend could actually be a good place to start as they tend to be more balanced. JW makes some very good blends; not Red Label, but Black Label is OK, Gold Label is very good, and Blue Label is just amazing.

Hoppe says Ruff said Morrisonn has concussion symptoms and has been shut down indefinitely.

At best, you can say that Larry is also a problem. The Sabres have spent a lot of money (no, not always to the cap, but still quite a bit), but Darcy has given a lot of it out in bad contracts. I haven't seen much conclusive proof that Larry has made Dacy sign or not sign a particular player. From most reports, Drury was on TG and his view of how contracts should work (1 yr, ideally), not Larry. While PA assumes that Darcy was told that he had to get rid of Tim Kennedy, it seems just as likely that he was surprised by the possibility of being able to buy him out (was in that narrow band where you can buy a player out but can't walk away; I believe that it was reported that it was the first time that a team had exercised this right) and, while he initially said off the cuff that they'd just have to work with the award, he changed his mind after looking everything over. I'm not a LQ fan, by any means, but a lot of people seem to deflect all of the blame off Darcy to Larry with little to no proof that Larry actually forced many of Darcy's decisions.

On the Vanek goal - was that Sabres player coming out of the TB zone onside?
I tried doing a screen cap on NHL.com's replay, but it wasn't good enough to tell. It was very close, but if I had to guess, my answer would be no. It appears that he was just barely off, but by a small fraction of a second.

I don't know what stat line you are reading from but even the Sabres official page has him at -8. He was -9 going into the game. So you are at best off by two points. My guess is that Connolly was given credit for being on the ice for the first goal against and not on the ice for one of the others.... Logic would dictate some scenario like that since he was definitely on for two goals including the one he scored. Link http://sabres.nhl.com/club/stats.htm
Two of the Sabres' goals that he was on for were on the PP, so they don't count toward the +/- (PP goals for don't count as +1, while PK goals against don't count as -1.)

That's just semantics and it also doesn't factor in what it would have cost the Sabres to let him go (and there would have been a cost to let him go). How much would those four first round picks have cost with no guarantee of any of them being as good as Vanek? Would anyone have bought season tickets having lost all three of it's stars in on off season?
The cost and performance of those unknown players are in the value of the first-round picks, not in addition to them. There's also a relative cost of uncertainty (a GM must be somewhat risk-averse since it is not possible to diversify away the risk of an unproven player and little opportunity to correct bad decisions), which is obviously higher with a single first-round pick, but is at least partially compensated for by the fact that they would have received four of them, especially if they believed that Edmonton wasn't likely to be a strong team, even with Vanek. I will give you that the marketing concerns of also losing Vanek that summer was definitely a big opportunity cost of letting him go and perhaps the biggest reason that they did not.

Vanek did not cost $50 mil and four first round picks. He only cost $50 mil.
It's an opportunity cost. They had two choices: pay Vanek $50 million or receive 4 first-round picks. So, the cost of keeping him versus not was $50 million and 4 first-round picks.

The shootout is not hockey, it's a skill competition. Pommer does not create offense by carrying the puck into shooting positions, he awaits the one timer. Where are all those effective wrist shots in regulation? One trick pony. As good as he was in shootouts last year, he hasn't been involved in a shoot out yet this year has he?
My point is that he does have a good wrist shot. It's not that he's incapable, it's that he is unwilling to use it during the game. The latter could be changed, the former cannot.
He has been in both shootouts this year. One, he wristed a couple inches from the top right corner, while the other (I believe) the goalie got the pads together quick enough to stop his shot five hole.

They didn't say that he was better suited for the wing. They suggested moving him to wing to help him get his groove back by letting him focus on offense with less responsibility in his own end. It's a very common move for young centers, but that doesn't mean that they stay at wing for their careers. Look at Ennis. He played center in Portland, came up and played wing for a while, and has now been moved back to center.
