April 2, 1972

The Sabres are already out of the playoff race before this season-finale at the Aud. So are the Flyers after Gerry Meehan scores with four seconds left in the third period to give the Sabres a 3-2 win and end Philly's season. Philadelphia needed only a tie to clinch the final postseason berth in the Western Division.

At the Aud, Clint Malarchuk returns to the net for the final minutes of the Sabres' 4-2 win over Quebec. The win wraps up third place in the Adams Division and secures a meeting with Boston in the first round.

I remember the 72 game against the Flyers well. It was almost as if we had made the playoffs for the first time ever when we knocked the Flyers out with seconds left in the season! Just another year and we'd "win" a race with the Red Wings for the final spot in the east and get to meet the Habs!
