Anyone have any advice on Joe Louis Arena?

Hello all,

I'm pretty new to this board. I'm from Rochester but I went to school in Pittsburgh, graduated last year and that's where I remain, for now.

Anyway, I am planning on visiting a ladyfriend in Ann Arbor and going to the game in Detroit on Saturday. I was wondering if anyone on SS has any advice for someone who has never been to Detroit...

How/where to get tickets? Trying not to spend a fortune.

Any good places to grab dinner before the game near the arena?

Good places to park?

How to sneak an octopus in? (just kidding..)

etc...

Thanks! and GO SABRES!!!

I went a few years ago. When Wings played Sabres on a Friday night and Bills on Sunday. Anyways, i can't help you out too much because i went to Michigan State to visit a friend and we took a bus to the game. But, we did go to HockeyTown Bar. It's an awesome hockey themed bar. It's walking distance from the rink and it's packed on game nights. I went there with my friend and saw a bunch of Sabres fans. And when we went, we bought tickets in advance on ebay. I wouldn't want to risk driving to Detroit for a Saturday night game. Tickets might go expensive and quick. Have fun.

Food - I highly recommend stopping into Greektown for dinner. Pegasus has excellent food and is not incredibly expensive either. There's also a really good pastry shop across the street. The casino is also right there too.

While that section of downtown Detroit is close to Joe Louis Arena, I'm not exactly sure you would want to walk it from there after dark. There is always the People Mover.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Due to the weather, I ended up barely making it to Detroit in time for the game, but I ventured over to Greektown afterward. Went to the Parthenon, food was sub-par but they were very hospitable. And hit up Astoria Pastry Shop..... to tiramisu.

Bunch of Sabres fans at the game, had a good time. They played like complete a$$, but for awhile I had a small bit of hope they'd get it to OT...

GO SABRES

My advice is not to go... Sabres will probably play one of their worst offensive-minded games of the year. They'll probably spend the entire time desperately swatting at pucks just to clear the zone. Victory will be in achieving the blue line on each shift. They'll probably expose Ryan to 43-45 shots and hang him out to dry repeatedly. Oh, and they'll give up two goals late, seconds apart.. But hey, I'm no Nostradamus...
