With the 17th and next-to-last hat trick of his career, Gil Perreault keys a 6-1 win in Calgary. Two of his goals come against Rejean Lemelin and one comes against ex-teammate Don Edwards. It's Buffalo's sixth win in a row, and for the third straight game, the Sabres score six goals.

After a 3-2 win over the Rangers at the Aud, and in the midst of a very good first season of the Rick Dudley Era, rookie Russian winger Alexander Mogilny tells his teammates it will be his last game. He cites a fear of flying, but some theorize the kid is suffering from culture shock or even wants to force a trade. Sabres' GM Gerry Meehan confirms that Mogilny is afraid to fly. "It comes down to that he's terrified of flying," Meehan said at the time. "I talked with him and I've talked with his agent. We're going to do everything we can to resolve the problem. He has a legitimate terror of flying." The problem first showed up after a flight to Detroit on January 16, when Mogilny did not board a connecting flight to Buffalo. After this date, Mogilny often traveled to road games on terra firma. For the record, Mogilny had 15 goals and 28 assists in his rookie season, including a goal on his very first shift in the National Hockey League, and in the free world.
