  1. It's clear not all of the information is released, but it is very telling that the NHLPA negotiated to and agreed with the 41 game suspension.

TSN has also reported that the issue surrounds proxy betting:

    Quote

The NHLPA negotiated Pinto’s penalty with the NHL, and he will not appeal.

According to multiple sources, one of the major issues leading to Pinto’s penalty was along the lines of “proxy betting,” where another individual or individuals have access to a legal account in his name. Companies like FanDuel specifically ban this practice. The state of New Jersey fined DraftKings $150,000 in March 2022 for allowing large (and illegal) proxy bets.

It’s not uncommon for pro athletes to have legal accounts, which are heavily monitored by the online site they sign up with. It’s in these companies' best interests to know if the players are in any way compromised. What could have complicated Pinto’s situation is where his account is based. He’s from New York State, and, for example, if a friend placed bets on a day the Senators were in Ottawa, it would be easily discoverable. ...

It also opens another concern: What if a friend places a bet on hockey using Pinto’s account? That would be a major, major problem and he’d need to prove it wasn’t him. There’s a lot we don’t know yet, but the league clearly was concerned with what it found. The NHLPA agreeing to and negotiating this kind of harsh suspension is a tell that no one liked what was discovered in the league’s investigation.

The league simply can't allow its players to bet on games, nor do they want the perception that they're lenient on the issue, especially if they're trying carefully navigate the massive cash grab that is sports betting advertising revenue.

    This is great news.

It’s not certain that he’ll be worth it but it sure seems likely.  He showed a lot last year as a rookie.  And he seems to have a great attitude and very good to great physical tools.

Oh, it is.  Our monkey brains just haven't unpuzzled it yet.  Get on board.  We have quality nerds in the front office now and they run this ***** now.

This is the riskiest contract yet.

    I hope it works out!

This is by far the best approach.  Lock your 1OA Dman at <$8.5M before he wrecks ass this season and demands more next season.  Avoid the bridge contract altogether.  Buy some years of FA.  Get this core locked in and build around them.  Leave enough cap flexibility for the other pieces.  It was the same move with Tage.

Tage, Cozens, Dahlin, Power, Samuelsson now all onboard through 2030 for $37.88M total AAV.  By 2027-28, the cap will cross $100M and Kevyn Adams will be looked upon as a god damned savant.  Whoever is providing guidance to him on cap management is the person of the hour.

Best term.  Acceptable cap hit now, good cap hit by year three. Slightly cheaper than Karlsson and tied with Doughty for the #2 spot.  Justafiably more than next few D (Werensky, Fox, McAvoy, etc).

Both Karlsson and Doughty contracts were signed in 2019 when cap was $81.5M; cap is now $83.5M.  That's only 1.25% cap growth, because covid.  NHL revenue grew 16% (~5% annual) to $5.93B in 2021-22 from $5.09B in 2018-19.  Grew 24% from 2016 to 2019 (~8% annual).

NHL MOU limits cap growth to 5% per year.  As we're coming out of the covid pit with multiple new TV contracts, we might see that 5% growth for the next three years or more.  By year three, a player with Dahlin's $11M AAV in today's money would sign for $12.7M in 2026.  The value would be like Dahlin signing for $9.5M today.

I think this contract gets Dahlin paid what he's worth AND is team-friendly by mid-contract.

Also, apologies in advance for a sad note; I think that's the first video highlight package I've ever seen with zero RJ calls.

although I imagine they would make more money, you’re basically asking the home team to invite more visiting fans through the door.

Were the Capitals going to sell out game one of their preseason otherwise?  Attendance at their last preseason opener was 12527, or 68%, and that was after they made the playoffs the previous year (they didn't this year).

If they stopped Bills fans from attending, they'd lose out on beer sales totaling -checks math- $100 Trillion dollars.
