Pluses so far: the D is solid.

TT and Mitts look okay. If they can figure out how to make their individual games work, then yay.

Minuses: KO and Sheary. Neither belong on this roster.

I can cut Sheary some slack.  No production lately, but he needs to be playing with a legit 2C.  Okposo is simply bad.  Can't stick handle, can't skate, can't do much except slow down his other two linemates.  A real nice Christmas present would be a trade to get him off the roster.

Well, I'm assuming that at some point in the next week or so, he will report rather than walk away from 90% of his expected remaining lifetime earnings.  If he does so, and there are no further incidents, I don't see the Sabres being able to terminate.

If he stays away for an extended period, then I agree that it's likely that the Sabres will be able to terminate.

This seems the most likely to me as well.  Not reporting and bad attitude is not trivial and I would like to see the contract terminated, however I think that is more wishful thinking than anything else.  He will come back crawling and begging for forgiveness and the team will be obligated to give him another chance to redeem himself.

The same guy who bolted from the team for the big city and big bucks? The guy who was carried by perhaps the deepest roster the Sabres ever had? The guy who abandoned them instead of taking care of unfinished business? The myth continues.

Jack Eichel showed commitment to Buffalo. That’s leadership.

That has nothing to do with this argument.  You don't think Sam would bolt for another offer?  I make the comparison based on what they did on ice.  Drury's decision was a business one in the off-season.  His leadership was no myth.  Drury was the kind of captain who made players like Reinhart play better...not the other way around.  Did you ever consider that deepest roster played like a President's cup team because the players had the influences to do so?

If Sam plays a full season like he did the his second half of last year, then I might feel differently.  He is getting better stats because he is playing with two stud players who help elevate his game.  If you put him down a line or two, I say he disappears again.

In my world, that is the definition of dictating play.

Everyone needs their line mates in order to make something happen. He can't dipsy-doodle with the puck like Jack, but far too often this year we have seen jack do that to the detriment of using his line mates when he should have (mostly in transition.)

I expect a #2 overall pick of being able to dipsy-doodle and draw players towards him.  Just my expectation.

We'd all LIKE more secondary scoring, but to be honest, the Sabres aren't that bad in that area.

What do you consider Secondary scoring?  If you look at the league and take away the top 4 goal scorers on each team (I figured 4 because the Sabres  first lineis  basically is Eichel, Skinner, Pomminstein, and Reinhart....all spending time on the first line and their top 4 goal scorers). Take away those 4 players and how many goals does the rest of the team have so far this season? 47 goals total.

How many teams in the league now have more than 50 goals from their non-top-4?  Tampa, Ottawa, Detroit, Toronto, Vegas, Nashville, Washington, and Colorado.  8 teams total.

How many teams have less than 45 from their non-top-4?  Boston, Edmonton, Colorado, Carolina, St. Louis, L.A. and Chicago.  7 teams total

How many teams have 45-50 from their non-top-4?  Everyone else. 16 teams including the Sabres.

In terms of 'secondary scoring' The Sabres are pretty much right in the middle.

Interesting research thanks!  I would be curious if you have also looked at it a different way.  What percentage of total goals does each team's top 4 players represent?  For example, if the Sabres top 4 goal scorers account for 75% of the total team goals, where would that 75% fall in comparison to other teams?  I could easily be wrong, but I would not be surprised if the Sabres top 4% is higher than the middle of the pack like your other analysis....but again I could be wrong.

  6. Sam is simply not able to dictate the play on the ice.  He needs somebody else to create the opportunities and then he seems to have a knack of being able to capitalize on those actions by others.  I think he is not a fit for a 2C as a result.  Yes, he is better when playing with Jack, but I thought he showed some productivity too when playing with ROR late last season.  That is still my point, he needs to be on the same line with a playmaker to achieve success.

For the right price, keep him, but he is not worth any more than what he is getting on his new deal.  I would not mind seeing him being sent off as part of a package deal to get a legit 2C.

  7. Not enough secondary scoring still.  Really need a viable 2C.  My second priority is for the coaching staff to get it's act together as far as special teams.  Not much PP opportunity today (1-sided officiating again), but before today the PP was horrible and ineffective (still miss the Disco Dan days where we had a top 5 PP unit).  Unfortunately it killed us again today.  Just as bad is the PK.  I feel the unit is coached to be too passive and therefore there is no pressure on the puck.  I'd rather see the unit be aggressive and go down fighting vs. the timid approach I see now.

Get a 2C and fix special teams and we can maybe keep up with the division leaders.

Does anyone have a URL for video of when McCabe was injured?

During McCabe's last game I went back on the DVR to look for something.  Saw several non-eventful shifts as far as any physical contact.  I think he skated one shift in the second period and again I looked for any contact...none.  He went to the bench and straight to the locker room.  I honestly thought he had the flu or bad food....just did not see anything obvious to suggest a long-term absence....still a mystery to me.
