  1. I agree with a lot of points in this thread. The best way to categorize the Regier era in Buffalo is simply mixed reviews. Some good moments, some horrible moments. Regier was a subpar drafter when you look at it in totality, he actually was a decent trader though (Briere for Gratton, the Drury trade, getting a 1st for Goose, and the Vanek to Islanders hoist just to name a few)..so I'll give him some credit there. At least he didn't leave the cupboard completely bare on the way out the door.

What else cost the Sabres a playoff spot one of those years I believe was this fascination with Patrick Lalime as a backup, he was ATROCIOUS....how come a move wasn't made there? Who really knows...it's water under the bridge...

And as for Tim Murray, so far i really like his style, but let's not give him the keys to the city yet...

  2. Or it may just indicate who they thought was the best player.

But I like this idea. And if it's true, then I think I want Bennett.

Up front? Fast. Relentless. Edgy. Attacking.

At the back? Big. Skilled. Nasty.

That's the identity of the Imlach team, and the identity I've always thought best fit the Sabres.

    Compher, Baptiste, Girgensons and Bennett?

    Risto, Zadorov, McCabe?

I think I might enjoy that.

  3. Sam Bennett will be the choice for Buffalo, based on what Tim Murray appears to want in a player. As for next year, deal with it then, no need to chase Eichel or McDavid, way too far down the line to even speculate this.

It will not take 3-5 years to get the Sabres back in the playoffs. Colorado rebounded quickly, so did Montreal. It can be done.

  4. Bottom line for me is this:

The Red Wings have been a mark of consistency and elite play for a very long time in the NHL (not so much lately but they are still good)

I don't recall them having high draft picks to build with to build the team they had, and as well use FA to their advantage when need be.

Tim Murray needs to draft well, regardless of where he picks, and Pegula needs to spend the right way when needed.

#1 picks don't guarantee anything. Just ask Edmonton.

  5. If they move Ehrhoff and don't get MAJOR assets back, I'm going to put my fist through a wall. Ehrhoff isn't a deadline day rental. He's an incredibly skilled puck moving defenseman with three cheap years remaining on his contract. I want a first line center coming back in that deal. I mean it.

I agree. I wouldn't just give Ehrhoff away. I do agree though with inkman: He is not a #1 dman. Because of Ehrhoff's decent cap hit and actual low $ owed, he will be a very attractive option for teams, especially teams that need defense that always need to stay just above the salary floor, because his 4M cap hit will help that, but they don't have to pay out 4M in hard cash.

  6. There is no information out there right now about when the decision has to be made. Three picks ahead of time, 3 days, 3 weeks... no one outside of the two organizations knows what that stipulation is right now.

Ah, I remember something about that but it wasn't clear...I sure hope we get to keep it for 2014!

  7. Sorry to be a little lazy here as I have not gone through this entire thread:

The 1st round pick the Sabres got from the NY Islanders: The Islanders have the option to keep this pick and then the Sabres get their 2015 1st round pick automatically, is this accurate?

    Thanks in advance

  8. Pat has the gravitas to correct Pegula, and Pegula will listen. Remember, this is the owner who cried in the presence of his heroes.

This is a huge step for Pegula; he hired someone who WILL correct him and WILL guide him towards a winner, rather than keeping a wishy-washy yes-man around. Just look at Pat's first move: he brought in Ted Nolan - talk about a ballsy, left-field move. Very, very exciting and this speaks volumes about Pegula, IMHO.

    Great post

  9. I was always against the Sabres matching the Edmonton offer sheet for Vanek. I felt the Sabres would have been better served by getting the four 1st round picks from the Oilers at the time. Now that Vanek's career in Buffalo is over, I believe history will favor the view that taking the (4) 1st rounders would have been much better.

I do agree with you on this but the Sabres were in a corner at the time: The way Regier handled Briere and messed that up and they lose Drury I can see why the Sabres matched the offer for Vanek they could not afford to lose all 3 players after a big season.

So it comes back to the same thing: Consider the GM and until that changes, a bunch of draft picks do nothing for me to convince me that any of these trades are good for Buffalo.
