    It’s not random.

It sounds like part of the reason this guy was chosen is that he’s good at setting a positive tone, establishing a winning culture, etc.  Those qualities  are sorely needed here because the franchise has become thoroughly suffused in a culture of losing — and that is EXACTLY the outcome that many of us warned against.

Didn’t you agree last summer that if this past season turned out badly, you would admit that the tank was the wrong move?

I recall many, myself included, acknowledging that the tank could very well start us down the path to becoming the Oilers, but it was a chance we were more than willing to take. Of course there are dozens of other variables to consider outside of the tank itself but I digress...

The tank appealed to me because it was an outside the box strategy for the Sabres that hadn't been tried before. If it flushed the franchise down the toilet for a decade then so be it. I liked the tank for the same reasons I like this hire: Different, outside the box thinking that hopefully shakes things up and starts moving things in the right direction.

He weathered the first period storm for sure.  Game could have gotten out of hand fast.   A few quick goals by bruins Thursday night will have the bandwagon jerks and their pig heading for the doors fast

It was awfully quiet for stretches at PNC last night. A beautiful thing. Hopefully the Bruins can step on their throats early on Thursday and end this thing..... Then its ***** the Bruins right where they breathe!

  3. I dont blame Canes fans for hating Buffalo at all.  It's just out of proportion. We came in for game one in droves, won the game and had some Sabres fans acting like major league jackasses. We still take over their arena now. It's not at all unlike to complaints we see on here with Leaf fans and some of the boorish behavior that goes on at FNC. Stuff like that stokes the tribal passions and really is what sports is all about, again minus the few true jackasses.

Theres two unique problems with Carolina that I contend are different than Buffalo/Toronto or likely almost anywhere else.

1.) The over the top hyperbole around sabres fans here. I'll admit some of this has died down in recent years, but it does persist.

2.) The fact that the canes organization itself participated in furthering this hyperbole and exacerbated it with their actions. Bush league nonsense.

The sport of hockey has grown immensely in North Carolina because of the Canes. I recently finished playing some college puck down there and everyone who was on the team and from NC was an avid Carolina fan, watching as many Canes games as I watch Sabres games. There are definitely fewer fans, less passion for hockey, and a lesser understanding of the game, but they do have devoted, knowledgeable, and passionate fans who have suffered through what was previously the longest playoff drought. I absolutely hate the Canes, but to say the Canes have had no impact in NC throughout their history is a boldface lie.

With that said: Go B’s (???)

I pretty much agree with this assessment,  its just very difficult to find a true native around here!

My beef is with the team 1A/1B fans. My neighbor who I mentioned last night isnt an NC native, he is from Illinois and grew up following the Blackhawks but moved here in the late 90s and adopted the canes as his team. He never celebrated the Blackhawks winning their cups and he certainly never sits in his season ticket seats with a blackhawk jersey on when they come to town. In other words I have no beef with someone moving here and adopting the Canes as their team, just dont hedge your bets and be a team swapping *****.

I once saw someone at a Canes sabres game wearing a canes jersey and sabres hat. That was as mind boggling to me as seeing someone wearing a MAGA hat with a Hillary shirt.

Why does Buffalo always get screwed? Honestly, we have won one lottery and besides that have only ever had the worst possible scenarios play out practically.

Burn in hell Dallas for failing us.

I hope the Blues are wrecked in the conference finals.

The lottery we won was a very fortunate event for the franchise.  The complete opposite of getting screwed.  The rest of the league got screwed on that one because the most likely outcome was another team winning.

The ones we "lost" were the result of the odds playing out as you'd expect them to. That's not getting screwed. Picking 12 spots higher in the first round would have been nice of course, but it's certainly nothing to lament to a great extent and it's not what I'd add to the Buffalo always gets screwed list.

No goal was Buffalo getting screwed

Leclair "scoring" through the side of the net was Buffalo getting screwed.

Losing 4 of our top 6 D in the ECF was an extremely rare and untimely occurrence that screwed us.

  6. Just was talking to my neighbor, one of the few true Canes fans, and he told me the Canes have limited ticket purchases to VA, NC and SC for the ECF.  It won't matter. They thought Buffalo fans were bad? Get ready for the invasion of the MASSholes!

I have never disrespected his Canes fandom and therefore have never voiced my complaints about all the fake fans to him.  The last thing he said to me was that he isn't so much worried about the Bruins fans traveling from elsewhere to the games as he is about all the fans who have been wearing Canes jerseys up until now that will be hanging them back up for their Bruins jerseys.  He gets it.

Boston holds the most hated status for me because of this kid.

I have a 30 year head start on this kid and nothing to show for it

I hate all Boston sports teams, but honestly at this point what difference does another one make? Following Buffalo sports teams as we do, none of us here are going to sniff anything close to rivaling that record in our lifetimes anyway. In other words no I dont want that kid getting a 12th parade in 17 years, but if it's a choice between that and a 2nd cup for the Canes or the Leafs first cup in two generations then I'm all in on Boston. Misery loves company.

I was with you until the Go Bruins part. I hate the Canes, but my hatred of all things Boston will always come first, even though I've never been to Boston and the jerks running the RBC Center (or whatever it's called now) escorted me out of the area at least 7 or 8 times out of the first 10 times I went there. I probably only got kicked out once or twice out of my next 10 visits after that and then I'm not sure I've been kicked out at all since then although I pretty much stopped attending Sabres games there once the tank started and the Sabres became a shitshow.

Now I will admit that I was a drunken obnoxious hooligan with absolutely zero couth after the first 6 beers but security definitely has/had a double standard where home fans got away with worse behavior than what I was getting escorted out for. Those are the breaks though. I'm sure they'd rather piss off the fans of the visiting team, than alienate their own fan base.

The difference in my hatred for the canes and Bruins is razor thin, but I guess my proximity to all the fake fans coming out of the woodwork here allows me to hold my nose and root for Boston. If I lived in Boston then I'm sure I'd be rooting for the canes.

  9. When you get right down to it I pretty much hate every other team on a sliding scale depending on circumstances.  Do I have today a deep burning hatred for the Columbus Blue Jackets? Absolutely not. But if they are ever standing in the way of the Sabres in their quest for a Cup then they will be enemy #1. I will hate them. Sports are meant to stoke our tribal instincts, you hate who you hate because you hate them. In no way is it supposed to be a rational process with rules and regulations guiding your decisions. It comes from the gut.

I hate the Bruins and I hate the Canes, but if the play each other in the ECF then the enemy of my larger enemy becomes my friend. Go Bruins.

Anyone rooting against the Canes has to be rooting against the Stars, right?  I mean, Dallas cheated their way to a Cup at our expense.   At least Carolina earned it fair and square, even if they didn’t get our best.

Why? The stars didnt screw us, Bettman did. We should hate Bettman.

Hate who you want for whatever reasons you have.

My hatred of other teams, minus the Yankees, stems from on ice actions. Not how fans root for their teams. Bruins, crippled Thomas Vanek, I hate them. Leafs more dirty plays and cheap shots than I can remember. I hate them.  Same goes for the flyers. It's not because their fans suck. Largely, most over the top fans suck. For any team including Buffalo fans. I just can't hate the Canes as i don't think of that series with anything other than disappointment. Maybe fans are redirecting their anger. Maybe they should be angry with Jay McKee or Darcy Regeir.

I guess if you are under 30, then this is all you have. You'd think having 10,000 ***** Leafs fans invade the city every game would be more inciteful but the heart wants what the heart wants.

That's a perfectly fine reason to get your hate on, but it's no more or less valid than anyone else's reasons on here. Either way I'd argue theres plenty to hate about guys like Brind'amour, Weight, Laviolette and others from that 2006 team. That series way back when was only a spark, the canes organization has done plenty since to give us reasons to hate them.

Edit to add: I hate the Bruins because of guys like Brad Park and Terry O'Reilly.  If there are rules for hating and it's to be limited to on ice factors am I still allowed to hate them 30+ years after they have retired?

Isn't this where the whole baby eating phenomenon came from?  They hate the Sabres / fans due to the raucous bahavior stemming from that series at their home games. It actually makes sense. They dislike abhorrent behavior. I'm certain Sabres fans in Carolina were doing things deserv-ed of their acrimony.

Us hating them on the other hand.  You're not us. I hate you. But it's different than that. I specifically hate you because we were having fun and you guys ruined it and you didn't deserve it because you guys don't "get" hockey. Still seems weird to me.

Yes, the baby eating thing came from a very small minority of Sabres fans acting like jackasses (some might question the wisdom of handing out pint glasses when they knew 6000 opposing fans would be in attendance) and their fan base in turn completely demonizing everything Buffalo.  Luke DeCock et al. wrote articles that only served to make things worse.  So we met their hyperbole with some of our own.

Again, like Swamp says why is this so hard to imagine that we would hate a team with a ***** and largely fake fan base that also hates us?  As a Sabres fan would you welcome the Leafs, Bruins and Habs fans that come to games all year in their teams jerseys only to swap it for a Sabres sweater if (big if) the Sabres were ever to make the playoffs again?  I'd tell those fans to go pound sand.  I personally know about a dozen people here who do exactly that whenever the Canes make the playoffs.  Fake fans are the worst kind.

I don't like 1. or 2. but I wouldn't be mad at Terry. Maybe Kim a little, because that's her area. As for 3. I'd kiss Terry on the lips if he ever authorized that (or somehow fixed the arena being half full of opposition fans).

If you went in 2017 then I dont think they were doing the behavior cards / scoreboard thing anymore. To the best of my recollection they finally stopped this in the past five years or so. Were you wearing any Sabres gear when you went?

I couldn't have been the only one to write the canes about this ludicrous bush league practice. Here's a card outlining behavior violations that will get you ejected, meanwhile dont mind all the pot shots we are going to take at your team and city on the scoreboard.  Just let that go. It's not like that stuff isnt going to rile up both canes and sabres fans alike. Idiots.

Yeah I hate the friggin canes and their whole team swapping playoff bandwagon fan base. And I'm not a lemming, if anything I'm pretty darn close to patient zero in my burning hatred of the canes.

  14. If the Ssbres started taking pot shots on the scoreboard at visiting teams  fan bases would that be a case of those visiting fans being "sad" or yet another reason for Pegula bad?

If the Sabres started handing out fan behavior expectation cards to visiting fans would that be because those fans should expect to be judged by the actions of a few, or yet another reason for Pegula bad?

If the Sabres started not taking ticket orders from visiting zip codes would that be because Pegula bad?
