  1. When did Sabres fans start hating the Leafs so much? I left Buffalo in 1997 and I have no great feelings about them one way or the other. Is it the arena takeovers? I hate the Bruins and I hated the Nordique as a kid. The Leafs were just some team that played in the other conference. But then again, I’m unique amongst Buffalo fans in my sports hatred in that I am only mildly annoyed by the Pats but hate the Fins with the force of a thousand suns. I guess my sports hatred is firmly rooted in the mid 80’s.

Right?  I wasn't raised to hate the Flyers, it just happened.  Same with the Sens, who didn't even exist until I was an adult (but not yet a grownup).

The Bruins, on the other hand, are inherently evil, as I started learning in CCD in 1st grade.  I believe it's in Paul's second letter to the Macedonians.

I know a lot of people here think of Toronto as a rival, but I don't.  They haven't been relevant in my lifetime other than 1999, and we know what happened then.

    Also, ***** Boston.

My formative years were the 81-93 Adams Division. Leafs were not in it. Bruins and Nodiques were my most hated teams. I always respected the Habs and the Whale didn’t matter much.

I probably should have added no cigarettes in the locker room and no beer past 8:00 PM.  After all, we’re not animals.

That's it! If I can't smoke a dart between periods, I can't even play. And in Chicago they had a cold 2-4 in the dressing room and we all downed one between periods. Stan and Bobby got two of course. It's in their contracts.

It is a shame my old hometown can't seem to get some of these things done.

From the time there was talks of a Bass Pro Shop maybe coming to Colorado Springs till I was shopping at it was less than 2 years.

I never understood how Bass Pro was supposed to be an economic engine that would save downtown Buffalo. We have a Bass Pro in Cincinnati that's the anchor tenant in a dead mall. It couldn't even save a single mall, nevertheless a whole city.

Adams is using the Brandon Beane playbook. Shed the overpriced "star" players from the past who couldn't get the job done.  Draft and develop from within.  Make smart and reasonable Free Agent signings.  When the team gets to the level that it is ready to compete for a championship, THEN make the big spash acquisition.  Perhaps in 1-2 years, the Sabres will be ready to sign their version of Von Miller.

Comparing the Sabres to the Bills, I see the Comrie signing as similar to the Jordan Poyer signing.  An under-the-radar signing of a quality guy with upside who wasn't a key player in his previous organization, but fits in well with what Buffalo is trying to do.

The problem is that draft picks take so much longer to develop in hockey.

I'm generally a fan of how Adams has done things, but the lack of goaltending, when they have tons of cap space (as well as draft picks to trade), is disconcerting.  I can understand why they wouldn't want a guy like Campbell at 5 x 5M, effectively "blocking" the future guys like UPL, Levi, Portillo, and the guy they just drafted, but there has to be someone out there willing to play on a high value shorter term deal.  Overpay (even in a big way) for 1-2 years, when there's cap space and by the time the contract is done, you have spots for the young guys.

You still have to convince someone to come here. I know that I wouldn't want to play in an empty arena on a losing team if I had other options.

  7. For the most part, the most successful teams in the NHL don't make splashy FA signings. Tampa built through the draft and acquiring prospects. Colorado did the same. The Rangers making the ECF this year is the exception, but they have to do this to remain relevant in that market. This is why I don't get upset at our lack of activity. I just want a goalie.

It does feel as if NHL GMs are getting a clue.  We’ll see after 12pm but I’d be surprised if there are as many bad contracts as in the past.

Let's see how much Ottawa pays for 34yo Claude Giroux.
