i would not assume that his debts are associated with financing assets like homes or other real estate. if that were the case, he'd be in much better shape.

my sense is that his debt is mostly the product of financing a lifestyle he could not afford (private air travel, hush payments, gambling, $10,000 bar tabs, and such).

Cautionary tale, sure. But "very sad"?

For his sake I hope al that debt is real estate. I mean I know he has a place in Vegas and I’m sure Cali and those aren’t cheap. Plus you buy a spot for the parents and next thing you’ve spent like 15 mil or more.

How the NHLPA doesn’t mandate a financial advisor to every player is beyond me.  Most of these kids leave home as teenagers and never get a decent education.   Maybe it was available to him and he chose to ignore it.

i'm sure they've offered plenty of help. his finances should be in conservatorship for the next decade at least i'd say.  strict budget and he can live well the rest of his life.

people have to get realistic about Cozens. I'm pretty sure he will be a good player but he needs to be developed properly. Throwing him in like the new savior is what they did with Mitts and that didn't go so well did it? Cozens is better, but lets not destroy this one with unrealistic expectations.

I’m not saying force him into the lineup I’m just saying If we want to make the playoffs he’s going to need to be good.  He’s also shown way much more in juniors than mitts ever showed at Minnesota.  I am almost certain cozens is going to be a very good player starting this year based on what I saw from him.  Unless he has literally done nothing this off season but drink.

We'll need these things and some roster upgrades

    - - -

The Sabres could go out in UFA and sign Tofolli or Fast, and Simon (I *think* he's still a C capable player, played both C and W in Pitts) and they'd be in my estimation, in pretty good shape at forward. Provided Tofolli is a reasonable deal (assume Fast and Simon would be).

toffoli would be the guy i would want.  right wing which is a need. plays a heavy game and playoff experience.

A good point - but this is definitely going to be an odd year for how much teams can/are relying on UFA to reshuffle. It's the Sabres best avenue right now I think, still.

this year depends most on a few  things...skinner getting back to form which i believe he will and cozens playing like a calder candidate, and us not putting a blind goalie in net.

One of several examples. Teams in Texas, Florida, Nevada have major cap advantages over teams in higher tax areas..Can add up to 6-7M advantage, Think of what teams can do with that extra cap space.

this isn't exactly true. if a player makes his home base in florida as a lot of them do their income is based on that states rate.  you see guys getting signing bonuses and those are usually the big chunks of their salary which would be at the florida rate.  game checks get taxed in the cities and states they play in.  as an example look at what new york tried to do with jeter years and years back. he claimed florida as his home so his salary wouldn't be taxed in new york. new york tried to go after him
