I saw this differently. ROR used to say he needed to be better after EVERY loss, regardless of how he played. Jack had a rough game last night, it was a rarity, and we all saw it. Jack was not placating the reporter, he knows he had a clunker and called himself on it. I don't hear Jack saying he needs to be better after EVERY loss like ROR. It just so happened that Jack did need to be better last night, he realized it and told it like it was.
I don't think it's that rare...

Wasn't this the big thing coming out of the summer, from all those heart-to-heart soul-searching talks?
That this team had a problem demanding accountability, that this was what they were afraid to do and that they needed more of?
More evidence of the maturation of Sam?
Yea, the fact that they made such a big stink about ROR's lockerroom style.... and now Jack is basically emulating it ("it starts with me, i wasn't good enough, etc")... not a good sign.
More evidence that Botts and Housley haven't got a clue.

Some people thought Messier was a better player than Gretzky for exactly the same reason.
The beauty of hockey is that it is two games simultaneously: a game of power and skill where where you try to beat the guy opposite you in a series of one-on-one battles; and a 5-on-5 chess match where you try to find and create the time and space where you or your teammates can "tap them in."
I suppose it's valid to value one skill set over the other, and its explains your position on Reinhart.
To me they all count the same.
Nailed it.

There are a lot of charts out there on the subject. I think this is a good one. Looks to me like you don't hit a 25% flame-out rate until you're into the 50s? I'm following that yellow line. Then again, I am not so great at reading charts. I think that's what it says, though.
And it also looks like your hit rate on mid-round 1st picks is about 50%. Around 38% by the end of round 1.
1. That chart is over 10 years old
2. 200gp is not a good barometer for a successful draft pick.... unless you think we got a good deal on Zemgus Girgensons because of games played.
3. Here's a link that breaks down the same draft years you displayed, but by draft slot and whether the player is Top6/4/1G. You can see that most of the mid-late 1st round draft slots net a 20-30% return rate...

https://www.tsn.ca/statistically-speaking-nhl-draft-pick-value-1.786131
Note: Every single pick after 15, has a >50% chance of being 4th line or worse.... and no pick has a >36% chance of being a difference maker.

ROR was constantly dogged for the "I've got to be better", "it starts with me", excuses....
Eichel has picked up right where ROR left off...
While calling out goalies is never a good idea... I kinda like that Reinhart called guys in the room out. Watch/Read his full interview, he didn't just call the goalies out, he called out everyone.
“That’s a team we were tied with going into the night,” Reinhart said. “That’s who we’re fighting, so I think we need more fight from the start from a lot of people in this room. That’s got to change very soon here.
“We all need to realize that we’ve got guys who are capable of making plays when we need to offensively. And with that being said, we need more respect for our own end. We need to all come back and pick up guys. If your shift calls for defending their guys, their top guys, that’s what you’re expected to do, and we need more out of everyone in that regard.”

I wouldn't go that far. They will potentially have three 1st round picks after this year. Whether it's low or high, first round picks usually pan out.
I hated losing O'Reilly, he is borderline all-star. But having either three 1st rounders this year, or two this year and two next year says a lot for the future.
I'm not happy that they might become the second team in NHL history with a 10 game win streak and not make the playoffs, but the fact that they were dead last for two straight years and are now in playoff contention has me excited.
I'm still thinking Housley has to go, but the roster is stacked. Re-signing the ballerina is a must, though.
Things that are not true. The success rate of mid-low 1st 1st rounders is not good... it's more like 25%

The Sabres haven’t had back to back regulation wins since October
This season (points) is a mirage

Skinner's one on one goal against carolina is a perfect illustration of my point. Reinhart can tap them in when they get to the front of the net and his shot from outside is okay but I have NEVER seen him fight through a guy one on one from outside the slot and out maneuver a guy and simply drive past a defender like that.
Skinner is by far a much better player and much much much more valuable to this, or any team.
I don’t disagree that Reinhart has not and cannot do what Skinner did on that goal.
Theres just far more to hockey than that.

Blues win again; our pick will likely be the highest 1st we have.
They beat the best team in the league, and moved in to a wild card spot... the ROR trade will end up costing the Sabres multiple playoff seasons and go down as one of the all time worst trades in franchise history.

Rodrigues and the secondary scoring have been buoying the team up as much as anyone lately. Reinhart has been really good. They aren't asking Jack to carry the team anymore like the were earlier in the season.
Scary...

Giving up 7, 4 and then 6 goals at home. Most of these goals are right next to the net with the goalie left on his own. Something is not right. Remember all the talk of our defense getting good? Team defense is just pathetic.
We are carrying 8 defensemen. Risto, Scandella, and Bogo should not be exempt from the press box. Whatever the message is... it’s not working. Start stapling guys to the bench. Put a “top 4” in the press box.

Question, you can only sign one who would it be? Jeff Skinner or Mark Stone?
Mark Stone is a better hockey player than Jeff Skinner... but we have our Mark Stone in Sam Reinhart.
we don’t have anyone else like Skinner.

Right, on the opposite side of the net from where the shot went to
He’s standing directly in front of the goalie as Skinner drives and he bails. Instead of maintaining his strong position and providing a screen and golden deflection opportunity

Yeah he was on the side, that was Pominville in front skating by
FYI. Go rewatch this play it’s at the 3:30 mark. Eichel is all alone in front of the net.
yes, Poms reaches... but it’s eichel who is all alone in front... and just gives the goal a clean look.
