  1. "don't block the kids" is just a stupid concept plain and simple.

You need a competitive environment where position has to be earned rather than being one of privilege.

Sometimes coaches can be guilty of favouring veterans over young players because they trust them more and they are more predictable and reliable but that's a thing you go through on most teams as part of the process. Eventually you EARN the coach's trust and you take the job and if you aren't good enough to take it, you dont' deserve it.

    "not blocking": is just dumb.

How is it not obvious to you that you are making cursory judgements on players you know nothing about because you never see them play. NHL players don't descend from heaven on a cloud. They come from the AHL and often take years to fully develop. You're writing people off because they don't score 10 goals during an emergency call up.

I'm not doing anything like that at all. When I see development I am more than happy to praise it. I want to see it for real though. Not in terms of future hypotheticals.

I was skeptical about keeping Benson on the roster but if you have read my posts in the latter half of the season you'll have seen that I gave him much praise.

I did not see good things from the Rochester call ups (the few that there were) unless you count Bryson, who was better than expected but I don't think of him like that since he was a roster player the year before. I'm talking here about the prospects.

I’ve had two BC people say you’re from Onterrible to me lately. I had never heard that term, probably because I live here. Both had only been to Toronto and had never seen the rest of the province.

That is a term I've heard out here now and again. Mostly if you mention Toronto or Ontario you get eye rolls or some sort of sarcasm like "oh, it's Ontario, well then it must be good" with full on sarcastic tone and disdain.

One thing I've heard multiple times from people who were born out here is they go visit Ontario in the summer and they are just not ready for the humidity. They come back hating the place for the experience they have with that weather. Just not ready for it. After 25 plus years out here I have issues with humidity now too. It's rare here.

This is my favourite Toronto video

I am fairly confused as to what everyone is debating about here.

The Amerks are a farm team. I’ve been watching them my entire life.

Maybe 10% of them graduate to the NHL.

Exactly. idk if it's actually 10% but it's a low number. So when people keep going on about how many prospects we have they need to stop and realize most of them are never going to make it, which is why we need more veterans at both levels (NHL and AHL).

Some AHL teams play few prospects and fill rosters with older players who are good and strong but are not going to the NHL other than in a fill-in role. That is what Hershey is. Syracuse is sort of like that too. Rochester is committed to development so it's a young roster with new players getting added in midseason. So try to take that into account while you watch your highlights.

Which is part of the problem in terms of how we develop and with the lack of culture we have at the NHL level. The kids need to be around veterans to learn what it takes and what it doesn't take. A bunch of kids who think they are god's gift to hockey not surrounded by vets is a model for failure.

Your AHL team is an injury reserve pool of veterans and a rookie training ground where guys learn to fix their flaws. Ideally it's about a 50/50 mix.

If your NHL roster is more than 30% (maximum) rookies, first contracts and bridge deals you're likely not going anywhere either.

The Sabres being the youngest team in hockey is NOT an accomplishment.

How would you know if you don't...watch them?

How is that even a serious question?

Every training camp we see who comes up and who goes back.

Every year we see the (lack of) contributions from injury call ups from Rochester.

How is any of this not obvious???

Is there any evidence that success in the AHL has any benefit in the NHL?

Didn't Washington's farm team win the Cup last year? They had injuries and called up a bunch of guys this year. They fit in and Washington did what we could not. You can argue that's not evidence I guess but it's something.

I just don't believe Rochester is teaching these kids what they need to succeed. I see it as a mirror of what Granato was doing. I think that's a mistake.

It’s not just teenagers. There is a good balance but they are developing a lot of kids which a farm team should be. Wahlberg and Östlund just joined in the past couple weeks.

At the end of the day Syracuse has a couple players that could help the Lightning. The Sabres probably have 8 that can be Sabres or NHL players on other teams if traded.

They play hard. Peterka, Muel and Quinn have graduated from the Amerks and have become solid Sabres.

Kulich, Rosen, Neuchev, Östlund, Wahlberg, R Johnson, Novikov, Levi are the next wave.

Savoie and Komarov should be joining next year.

The Amerks model is working for the kids.

Right, stick with that if it helps you, but you're not listening to what I'm saying. We've been fed the full prospect cupboard line for years and "next year" is the year for years and it's all BS.

We're bottom of the league every year so sure, we have a bunch of shiny first rounders all over but we have only managed to land 3 2nd rounders into NHL players and aside from Victor Olofsson and those 3 nobody from the lower rounds has made it to be a regular NHL player in over 10 years!

If Rochester was a dominant AHL team I might buy in to the just wait for these guys argument, but they're not, it's all BS. We will never win this way.

He took his team to game 6 of the conference finals last year and within a whisker of first place this year. How do you come to the conclusion that Appert is garbage by only watching highlights? Good heavens. Embarrassing.

Because of what the prospects learn and more importantly don't learn coming out of Rochester. That's all that matters to me, that's what the AHL is for.

Boston hatred comes from a myriad of things as well as being in our division forever. The Patriots hate also festered the disdain.

Philly hate originally came from the Cup Finals in 1975 but was reignited in the late 90's when we met them in the playoffs and then ran into them over and over again after; including our most recent one.

Toronto hate tends to be from two primary factors, distance and their fans. Toronto fans have frequently taken over our seats due to the ever famous example of fans paying off their seasons with the selling of both Leafs game. Which obviously means Sabres fans are gouging Leafs fans and also showing a certain degree of the wealth disparity between the two cities. The fans that don't sell are made aggravated by their presence because unlike the vast majority of away fans; Leaf fans inhabit a very particular type which tends to be loud, proud and arrogant.  I have always described them as Patriots fans without anything to back up their claims. Although the Sabres have beaten up Toronto far more often; their fans always return and claim superiority regardless of circumstances. They also have the habit of stark mood swings depending on results that make any other fanbase look tame and in control. Plus they deem themselves the Hockey Mecca of the world and the media seems to reinforce it quite often.

You're right about the media but it's not just hockey. There's a general media focus on Toronto for everything in Canada. Doesn't help that the CBC is located there.

and the rest of the country subsequently has some degree of dislike (or even hatred of Toronto) because of that.

Canadian RHD Henry Mews has made a lot of head scratching decisions at the U18s

Gavin McKenna who is Bedard’s cousin by marriage is 16 and is unbelievable at the U18s.

He is 2026 draft eligible but Button said today if he was in this draft he would go 1 or 2 behind 18 year old Celebrini.

Let's hope the 2026 lottery is not something we are concerned with.

Do you attend Sabres home games against the Leafs? I hate the Bruins and Flyers so much more than the Leafs. I might even dislike the Sens more than the Leafs.  The Sabres kicked their ass for over a decade.  I just don’t really care about them.

Now if I attended games where it’s the majority of fans are from the great white north, I may have a different opinion.

I don't attend them since I live in BC. I almost went to the Seattle game this year but it didn't time out well. Won't pay for Canucks prices until Sabres get better.

My hatred for the Leafs is a Hamilton-Toronto thing that started way back in my youth over 50 years ago.

I understand Sabres fans hate for Boston (although their fans now say what you say about the Leafs as in Bruins have kicked their ass for over a decade so they don't care about them). Flyers? Cup final? That's a long time ago so I've let that one go myself. You should probably hate Carolina and Dallas more.

Why not Rags and Islanders hate being in the same state and all?

idk if I lived in Buffalo I think I would hate the Leafs and the Habs the most. Mostly because of all those coming over and overrunning those "home" games. That just embarrasses the entire franchise imo.

Huh. Have you watched any of the games or is just dumping on the organization because you enjoy it?

If you think a handful of teenagers should be running over a bunch of quality AHL bets then I don’t know what to tell you.

    Highlights. Not full games.

I think our development program and what we do in Rochester is highly flawed. Why is it a bunch of teenagers vs. AHL vets? It shouldn't be. It should be a balanced mix, as should the NHL roster. You want to start creating a "winning culture" you start with your farm team and teaching ground.

When they come up they should already have in them a firm work ethic and a winning attitude.

This had to feel good as you hit “submit reply”. Let’s go Bruins!

Nah, Bruins aren't going anywhere and their era might finally be done. They might still beat the Leafs (maybe) but they won't get near beating Florida.

As for feeling good, yes but not for why you imply.

My view has always been that what matters is the NHL roster and all this prospect salivation talk is BS. Too many years of "look what's coming later" from the Sabres while icing a failed team in Buffalo. I also don't think we develop players properly in Rochester and Appert is garbage.

Do I want some of our shiny prospects to develop into something? Absolutely. Am I convinced they will? Absolutely not.

    Boston does not look good.

There's a part of me that keeps thinking that after Florida beat out Tampa some of the Bruins decided oh hell no, I don't want to play in round 2.

I think the Bruins lose now and lose big. It'll be like the cup final against St. Louis. Blown out at home and maybe this will signal the final end of an era that has so far refused to die but has to eventually, and then the opportunity for the Sabres to seize the opening will be there and it's their's for the taking.

That’s a great question for Keith Gretzky.

I don't remember exactly but wasn't Keith even smaller than Wayne and so although he put up points in junior he just couldn't get it done in the NHL. I wonder if he'd have been able to play in this league now?

Frankly the Russians make the Israeli settling of disputed land look like a child taking over a sandbox. Stalin wanted full on Russification in the Soviet Union and sought out ways to eliminate or disperse local populaces in the millions and replaced them with Russian Communist communities. Ukraine being a prime example as well as all three Baltic States, parts of historical Finland, and the Caucuses region. And that’s not even touching on the vast region of Siberia or the Far Eastern reaches of the Russian State.

How the hell did we get multiple Baltic people/ descendants on this board lol It’s not like a giant population in comparison to the world.

There was a small but thriving community in Hamilton when I was a kid. They had their own community center and everything. My mom used to volunteer down there. They'd organize "aid" and packages of used goods and whatnot to ship over to friends and relatives who for them didn't make it out after the war.

Midsummer (St. John's Day) festivals in Northern Ontario were massive annual parties.

Probably. I think they can be exempted for hockey or studying.

My son has a Russian friend who is 22 and hasn’t done his military stint. He has played junior hockey and taken college courses. I am not sure if it is required once his studies are done. He is trying to get a work visa to remain here.

Is he here? I could be wrong, but I think if you go back to Russia you still have to do it. This was part of what was involved with the Flyers and Fedotov. He didn't want to go to the Ukraine but there were some weird negotiations there as well.

The media here severely oversaturates the market with Canadian team content under the guise that folks support these teams for no other reason than their geographical location. It’s hard to explain if you are a buffalo citizen (if you are) because you aren’t exposed to that narrative. Imagine being bombarded with Rangers content because they are representing your great nation’s cup pursuit.

I feel like you wouldn’t give a shite and ultimately come to resent the narrative

Okay I get that actually. They definitely overdo it and I get sick of the Leafs love and McDavid/Edmonton most of all. I see what you mean now. I tend to avoid most of that coverage though (aside from the whining when they lose). I've always resented the idea that you HAVE to cheer for a Canadian based team if you are a Canadian.

Last time I actually cheered for a Canadian team was with the Nordiques, because I wanted them to beat the habs.
