    My 2 cents:

    - I like the trade.  I've never been a fan of Mitts', and although he's developed over the years from probable washout to decent NHL forward, I sure didn't want to give him $7MM x 7 years (or more), which is what I think an extension would've cost.  The characterizations in this thread of Mitts as "our best forward" and "tough to play against" are insane IMHO.

    - Meanwhile, Byram, who turns 23 in June, has been averaging 20-22 minutes per game in the last 2 seasons for an elite NHL franchise.  He's averaged 20 min per game in 27 playoff games.  He's a great skater, he fights more than most of our D group and he can score a bit.

    - There is NFW that they trade Byram after 1 season.  If he's good, they'll sign him to a long-term extension.

    - I understand the reflexive doubt for any move KA makes -- he's earned it with this atrocious season.  But I think @pi2000 is right that this was a good and opportunistic move to sell MItts high and buy Byram low.

Let's say argument's sake, that Byram stays healthy and has a great season next year.  How much would it cost to retain him? 6 mill, 7?  KA will also have to re-sign JJP and Quinn and has already invested some 27 million in Dahlin, Power, Clifton and Samuelsson, plus whatever he decides to pay Jokiharju to not run away as he is our only marginally competent RHD.

I stand by my prediction, isf Byram plays well, we won't be able to afford to keep him and he'll be traded for other assets.

  2. So far White, Poyer, Morse, Bates, Neal, Harty, and Hines are gone, and probably Martin as well.

    Douglas and McGovern restructured.

    Haack and Edwards re-signed.

    Haack will replace Martin

Not sure who will replace Morse and Bates at center

Douglas has already replaced White at CB

We are also now down to one safety on the roster and that's Hamlin.

Ty Johnson will replace Hines once re-signed and no one cares who will replace Harty except Hamler was signed at a futures/reserve deal a few week ago.

  3. Here is the best news of all.  He is likely only going to be here for a year and will likely be traded at next year's deadline or after next season.  He has one year left on his deal at 3.8 and then he is an RFA.  Given the Pegula internal cap and the money invested in Samuelsson, Dahlin, and Power, we won't be able to re-sign Byram if he has a good season.

  4. Well that was quick.  If I knew Adams would react so fast to my thread I would have posted it two months ago.

Hate the trade.  I guess the trade is part of the internal Pegula spending cap.  5 LHDs, and we got younger and more injury prone, and lost our best playmaker in the process.  Joki’s agent must be sitting in his office laughing his ass off.

KA explicitly said there were going to be tryouts once the playoffs were lost.  He’s going to replace the players that leave at the deadline with kids.

Try outs doesn’t necessarily mean calling up Kulich and leaving him in Buffalo for the season.  Two years ago Quinn and JJP received two games in Buffalo.  I don’t see Rosen or Kulich getting an extended tryout.  It’s more likely someone like Rousek gets a longer look to see if he can replace Z or KO long term as a 4th liner.

And the rest of this season will be even more unbearable to watch as whatever 4th line we assemble gets caved in game after game and a fleet of unprepared and unready kids get trotted out and fed to the wolves.

I’m going to take a more positive point of view.  I didn’t want KO, Z, VO or Jost back this season and I’ll be happy to see the back of them.  I sincerely think KA will find at least two players with term (or RFAs) to replace the dearly departed and we’ll be better off for it.  Last season he acquired Stillman (bad) and Greenway (good) with term.  He also took Bjork (terrible) with term in the Hall deal.

I also don’t think they’ll force the kids into the lineup for the remainder of this season.  They are trying to make the playoffs in Rochester and need their best players there.

  7. I think he'll be more active than we think.  KO, Z, EJ, and someone else will be traded off the team.  I also see 1 or two players added.  One player will be on an expiring contract to help a team clear cap space and give us a warm body to replace a departed player (possibly in the same deal such as Z for cap dump and a 4th).  Another player with term (or a pending RFA) similar to the Greenway deal last year.  Perhaps someone like Chychrun or Boone Jenner.

    No. 6 - Zach Benson

    Quote

Benson’s a driver in every sense. He’s a multi-dimensional forward who has quick acceleration, can handle the puck at speed and change tempos in control, can shape play by opening up his hips to go heel to heel, thrives in traffic, is a triple shot-deke-pass threat, plays one step ahead of the game in possession, supports the play effectively, problem-solves incredibly well, works hard off the puck to keep his energy up (he plays heavier and scrappier than he looks, too), and sets the pace (whether by picking it up or slowing it down to use his creativity) and effort level for his line.

    No. 20 - Matt Savoie

    Quote

He’s always engaged, he keeps his feet moving, he plays with a ton of energy, and he finishes his checks and knocks his fair share of players over despite being on the smaller side. He’s also sturdier on his feet than his listed height (5-foot-9) might suggest, which helps him play between checks. He creates a ton of breakaways for himself. It’s so hard for defencemen to track him when he gets into twists and turns. He’s impressive in the shootout with a variety of moves he can go to. He routinely has a half step on the opposition, both in jump and in raw speed whenever he turned on the jets. He plays the game with such drive that his size usually doesn’t feel like a factor. He seems to pounce on so many pucks when they squirt into holes in coverage.

    No. 21 - Jiri Kulich

    Quote

Kulich is a sturdy, driven, hard-shooting player who can morph his game to his role. He can function as the detail-oriented, above-puck defender who makes quick plays/decisions with the puck. He can play off of talented linemates to free his extremely dangerous shooting arsenal up. Or he can carry the puck and function as the primary handler on a line. I like his positioning off the puck. I like the strength, balance and control of his skating stride. I like how quickly and hard shots come off of his stick (not just with his world-class one-timer but through a deceptive early release point in stride too). I’ve seen him come up big in big moments.

    No. 51 - Noah Östlund

    Quote

Östlund’s calling card is his airy, agile skating stride, excellent hands, cleverness, and committed two-way game. The skating and defensive aptitude (including on faceoffs) make him an able penalty killer and the rest give him clear tools of creation at five-on-five and on the power play. He wins a ton of short races, creates quickly as soon as he’s in possession, and darts around the ice in control to get into scoring areas or facilitate from the perimeter. His lack of size and strength (he’s a lean 5-foot-11 and 160-something pounds) are likely going to be impediments as he tries to progress into the NHL but I thought they’d make his jump to the SHL this year a little more challenging than it has been too and he has basically looked exactly like himself.

    HM - Isak Rosen

    Quote

He’s going to have to learn to play a little differently to build towards a scoring role at the next level but with patience and proper development, he’s going to inject skill into an NHL top nine and threaten on the power play in the long term. He’s got the threatening transition game, nifty release, perimeter speed and control, and shot shaping to become a 20-plus-goal scorer. He can run a little hot and cold (he was hot to start this season but has cooled of late in Rochester), but consistency will come with reps and maturity and you have to remind yourself of his age when considering that he has already played two years in the AHL.

  9. The schedule coming hone is very hard.  However of the 20 remaining games after tonight there are 9 games left against teams between us and the wild card.  We play Det 3 times, Wash twice, and one each with TB, Philly, NJ and the NYI. Add a game against imploding Ottawa.  If they Sabres can win all 10 of these games and split the other 10 games against Tor (2), Edm (2), Dallas, Seattle, Nash, Calg, Florida, and Van, then they’ll have a legit shot at the playoffs as hard as that is to believe.

Winning tonight against Wpg would help.

  10. I wrote in another thread that KA is bringing back nearly his entire roster next season.  It was a little tongue in cheek, but the Sabres are 7-3 in their last 10.  They have 21 games left.  If they continue that level of play the rest of the season they might challenge for a playoff spot by the end, thereby creating hopium, and giving KA the excuse to run it back one more time.

  11. Every year there is a player or two traded at the deadline with term who is traded because he needs a change of scenery.

Last season KA smartly acquired Greenway for a 2nd and he has been a quality addition to this roster.  He has played up and down the lineup, scored some timely goals, and killed penalties effectively.

So who could be this deadline’s Jordan Greenway for the Sabres?

  12. 1 hour ago, dudacek said:

The Sabres finished last season 24th in the NHL in defence, allowing 3.35 goals per game

    • In the 1st quarter of this season they were 18th, allowing 3.33
    • In the 2nd quarter of this season they were 25th allowing 3.40
    • In the 3rd quarter of this season they are 1st allowing 2.16

So basically they were just as bad defensively and in goal in the first half of the season as they were last season as they played themselves out of contention.

Now that they aren’t in real contention they are playing better.  I think we have seen this movie before.

The offense still hasn’t come around.

UPL does deserve all the accolades he is receiving for this season.  He is the sole reason our numbers are better.  We have allowed the 20th most HDSA (high danger shots against) this season and were 21st last season according to moneypuck.  In fact, we allowed only 2.1 HDSA last season and are allowing 2.2 this season.

However, don’t count on a repeat performance from UPL next season.  As we have seen with our top forwards, next season is a thing onto itself.  It does give hope for next season, but that’s it.   Goaltending stats vary year to year and are very dependent on how the team plays in front of him.

  13. He is going to bring back virtually the same roster.

He’ll re-sign UPL, Krebs, Joki and Mitts, elevate Levi to goalie 2 and if KO wants to play again, he’ll re-sign him as well. I also think he’ll re-sign Robinson.   That leaves exactly 2 roster spots; 13th forward and 7th D available for new talent.

He’ll claim that this season was growing pains for the youngest roster in the league.  He’ll state the fans should be optimistic for 24/25 because of the improved defense and goaltending in the second half of this season, the return to health of key forwards and the continued development of young elite talent in Benson, JJP, Quinn, Power, Levi and Ryan Johnson.  He’ll talk about how close to NHL ready star prospects Savoie, Rosen, Kulich and Novikov are giving us great depth next season and in the future.

    Was he?

UPL, Dahlin, Samuelson, Thompson, Cozens, Mitts, like it or not, this is the team JBot built.

Don't forget Skinner, Joki, Ryan Johnson, and Bryson are Jbot's as well.

The breakdown looks something like this (25 total players active and injured). Players listed by how they were originally acquired by the Sabres.

    DR - draft: Girgensons

TM - draft: Olofsson; FA: Okposo

    Jbot (10 players)

Draft: (7) Cozens, Mitts, Dahlin, Johnson, Samuelsson, Bryson and UPL

Trade: (3) Thompson, Skinner and Jokiharju

    KA (12 players)

Draft: (4) Power, Quinn, JJP, and Benson

    Waivers: Jost

Trade:(4) Robinson, Krebs, Greenway & Tuch

    FAs: (3) Comrie, Clifton & E Johnson

Sorta with both of you simultaneously; the Sabres have looked slower and somewhat stiff these last few games yet I also definitely see that unwillingness to give up persona they showed last year. A low energy variant of it at very least.

I guess, I saw this as a low-event game where the Sabres played pretty solid team defense. They had 10 takeaways and played TB even physically.  I haven't seen the puck possession stats by zone in minutes, but in the 3rd the Sabres seemed to control more of the play.  It was a very solid road win.
