Ok, first post.
I'll defend the conservatism when lacking scoring talent. In the simplest of "analytics", it's clear that lower goals against is more correlated with both points and ROW than a higher goals against (slightly, but noticeably).
When the best two players on the team are out and another is still hampered by injury, biding time by playing a system that will stifle a game is not an unreasonable approach. This is especially true when you don't have a superstar goalie or a dominant defensive group to allow forwards to be more free-wheeling.
The fact that it didn't work needs to be acknowledged but the plan was not unreasonable given the roster at that point.
I am not saying it was fun to watch, just that it was a defensible approach. I hope it ends.
