  1. I don't know man, I always have a great time at weddings with my wife. I'll admit that the odds of getting some strange decrease dramatically, but there's an open bar and a dance floor at every one, so can't complain :flirt:

Yup, this. Unless it is someone I barely know (wife's / dates's friend etc), I can't get myself to complain about being surrounded by well-groomed people, looking to have fun, with an open bar.

  2. Did he do this, or did the head coach of the Nashville Predators, who has taken three different franchises that played three different types of hockey to the finals, do this?

Housley was in charge of their incredibly average power play, we do know that.

I appreciate this information on the powerplay...First brake tap on Housley...Then I look at my alias and attempt to put this minor imperfection into perspective.

  3. I wanna believe in Tocchet, because of Pittsburgh's success, Crosby's appraisal of him, the fact that he at least has head coaching experience, and Botterill clearly believes in him. But man, I really just can't

Ditto. I am also biased against former players of his style as coaches (see also bougner). I want innovation from a coach and have reservations about a coach who made it based mostly on grit (I know, I know Rick had more than a few goals).

  4. How old were you went you began to understand and follow the game well? I'd probably say for me it was in the 4th grade range. Right around 9 or 10 years old.

Point is, little kids (6 and under) in the arena don't bother me. I behave how I want. I just don't understand the point of bringing them. Other than it being a waste of money, it's a complete chore of a time making sure they're behaving.

My 5 year old understands offsides, icing etc. I literally have to beg him to go to the bathroom instead of watch the zamboni at intermission. I'm not saying he's special or not special compared to other kids, he just genuinely loves hockey. During the season, in the morning he jumps on the ipad as I make coffee, checks the scoreboard and watches the highlights not only of the sabres but most of the games. It is obviously also about the parents. It is amazing to have your kid with you when something special happens. I will never forget the look on my daughter's face when Jack scored that ridiculous goal against Columbus or my son after the OT breakaway goal against the Hurricanes. Finally, even if I was not a parent I would still love the afternoon games. Heck yes, I prefer a 1 - 3 PM start on a frigid saturday in February to driving down at night.

  5. I don't mind a couple small kid-centered things, but the way they set up the game day experience, focused on children and families, is a huge reason why there is no atmosphere at Sabres games.

Dude with family here including 5 year old son, 8 year old daughter who both regularly attend games. I do not think either kid enjoys those "family friendly" interactives on the Jumobtron. On the other hand, both kids enjoy the Let's Go Buffalo chants and Sabretooth hitting the drum. They want to be involved in the game, not have quizzes or house party music blasted in their ears. My son instinctively covers his ears after every whistle! More organ, more chants, more focus on the game which is why my son in particular asks for tickets. He, like me, loves the game and hates the noise around it.

  6. After not hearing anything from sources inside 1 Seymour H Knox III Plaza, I am starting to get my hopes up. You would think some local reporter would text or call a contact who would intentionally leak that there will be no color changes by now. The longer this goes, the greater the hope.

Finally, this would be a very strategic move. The fans have invested in an inferior product for 6 years and there is no Eichel coming in this year's draft. It has been more than 20 years since they took the royal blues from us and this simple gesture would put money in their pockets and provide a very straightforward marketing strategy. Looking at the pictures above, I am having a hard time finding a good argument to stay in the navy color scheme.

  7. You have to be willing to 1. Try something new and 2. Actively look for it.

I think most folks from every age group lament the loss of what they listened to growing up and never look beyond top 40 for whats out there that's new.

Yup, that's sounds right. Music is also a time machine, so hearing whatever is from say your mid-teens to mid-twenties usually brings back fond memories. For me, nothing beats hearing something completely different for the first time. I also love the hunt for new music, so maybe I'm an outlier.
  8. uuummmm....dislike Matchbox 20.  Could never get into them.

Let me add todays music is terrible.

Counterpoint, today's music is fantastic. There is more quantity and quality in every genre than ever before. We just need to dig for it. The music on the radio is pretty rough, I'll give you that!

  9. This is very true. There are a lot of us out there trying to find real country music. And you'd have to call it alt-country. For me, country and blues are very closely related. Blues has had its more glamorous takes, especially with some of the really big blues rock stuff. But you can still find people making music that keeps the spirit of guys like Lead Belly and Fred McDowell alive. There's enough realness. Enough grit. Country used to be sharp, witty and SMART. Country has gotten dumb.

I still think it's a huge conspiracy to keep people dumb and poor. Turn the redneck lifestyle into something to be "proud" of and you'll be able to elect Donald Trump President in no time. Larry the Cable guy was a total fraud and these dopes didn't even care because he made being stupid trash okay! The music just followed the money.

    Support Our Troops

Drink some beers in the truck

Come die in our oil wars

Didn't you know Jesus walked with the dinosaurs?

That's what it means to be a 'merican

Love me some alt-country. See Neko Case, Ryan Adams, Wilco, Justin Townes Earle. So flipping good. Cannot listen to a minute of contemporary country.

  10. Lol

I also just googled Buffalo Sabres GM. The result brought me great joy. I hope it makes it until Friday for the fantastic thread. Finally, I vote for young dude from Toronto. His Ted Talk was fantastic, especially the part about recency bias.

  11. The disdain he has for keep it simple.

How many times did we hear the Sabres say as things fell apart that to get back on track they just had to "keep it simple."

And how well did that work?

I am so sick of playing not to lose. Release the hounds!

    Release the hounds!!!

  12. Totally out of context, Doc. Paul's point was that the lack of extra work in ROR Practice, where they must have worked on tips and screens, resulted in fewer such goals this season.

Yet somehow 37% more assists. Did those result from less or more work on his passing? Paul needs to supply more details to justify characterizing players as "arrogant" or acting "like he made it". This stuff can stick with a player a long time especially for a 20 year old kid. It is the reporter's job to tell us why he has this opinion. All we have heard is anecdotal evidence that he may or may not have missed extra sessions with ROR at some point during the season. Finally, it is not just this one instance with PH, the guy doesn't put the hours in to add substance to his opinions.

  13. This is cropping up wayyyyy too much. How smart some of you think you are. How analytics always has the correct answer and everyone else is dumb and lazy. It's not a matter of a computer spitting out the answer. We have a human here with eyes, a human who goes to all the practices and noticed that Reinhart started skipping the O'Reilly practices (Flagg's contention notwithstanding). People are going to put at least as much stock in that as Nearsighted Lopsided Fenwick on Jewish Holidays.

This is not about fancy stats, but rather Hamilton not putting the time in to provide a fair comparison to support his position. My expectation is that an article from a professional will have more thought, effort, and expertise than your veteran posters on SS. "In his second season, Reinhart participated in very few of the extra workouts and his attitude changed too. He acted like he had made it and became pretty arrogant in his demeanor and in interviews." Does Paul even provide an example of his "arrogant demeanor"? We the audience have no clue what our reporter is referring to in regards to these interviews. The reporter is also assuming Sam is being arrogant rather than masking another emotion. Perhaps Sam is tired of answering the same question in his interviews? Or maybe he is frustrated with losing?

  14. Reinhart had a disappointing season, PA, and a lot of people think that. But using the comparison method Hamilton did, which you still haven't commented on, is the most laughable joke of an argument I've ever seen from someone who gets paid to have hockey opinions. My jaw hit the floor when I read it. If a casual hockey friend fan of mine tried to do that, I'd never speak to him about hockey again. It was that bad. When combined with the narrative he tried to build against Samson all season long, about him turning lazy because he hadn't been to the ROR practice during the stretch when the coaches canceled the ROR practice because the team had 11 games in 19 days, and then with Samson later being reported to have gone to ROR practices after this stretch, well, that's why people have a problem with the article and with Paul. Not because he criticized our precious hockey team.

    What Flagg said.

  15. From PH's recent column - "The lack of extra work showed as his goals went from 23 to 17. He did increase his assist total from 19 to 30, and overall had five extra points."

So "lack of extra effort" apparently results in less goals and more assists per year. Paul if you're out there, this does not count as doing your homework or as you like to put it "extra effort". How does Sam compare to Draisaitl or other players his draft year? You may want to take a look at Flagg's analysis. Personally, I do not care if you criticize or praise my local team. Just give me some data to back up your opinion.

  16. I didn't have a problem with his demeanor or anything he said. I didn't think he disrespected anyone there. Hamilton has bad hockey opinions, I hear them every time he comes on the morning show. The O'Reilly practice stuff was ludicrous (the coaches shut down the extra practice) and he brought no evidence to the table to defend his character assassination of Reinhart (he never once verified that Reinhart was spending his extra time from not going to ROR's practice doing anything lazy or bad, and he was at the real regular practice anyway!). That was an embarrassing display by him that lost all of his credibility for me, and makes me laugh at the "Eichel Staged freak out" story line.

Oh and poor Josh gorges being bullied by the mean Sabres rookies.

Was Eich's benching for being late to a meeting or not back checking? Was it ever reported or just speculated? I've heard both. Is Calgary in immature hands because they had to bench Gaudreau and Monahan at the same time because they were both late to/skipping a meeting? Mehhhhhhh.

All of this...Thank you Flagg. Hamilton seems to run with a narrative without much if any evidence to back it up. On the other hand, Coller, JW, even at times Schopp have data to back up their opinions that are likely the result of putting in work hours off air. I wonder how difficult it is for them to hold back when PH is talking on the show. I won't call PH lazy, because I do not know his daily routine. However, his opinions that he will pass off as knowledge/facts seem to be based on very brief observations.
