  1. What about his moves makes you feel like you can trust his talent evaluation?

He inherited a roster that was void of any goalie, defense or winger depth, several bloated contracts and no organizational commitment to pipeline development.

He also might have inherited a toxic locker room.

    Since he's taken over:

He's addressed goalie, defense depth -- has a start on forward depth, created winning culture as a priority in minors, has instilled a development mindset with prospects

Signed who needed to be signed, i.e. Hickey, Pilut, Asplund, UPL, Olofsson, Pu, Borgen

  2. This is a huge concern. But what if jack was a self entitled ass the first year or two in the league as 19/20 year old but starts to learn what it takes? I may be wrong but his defensive play, hustle and interviews the second half of the season were night and day compared to early in the year. Maybe it's wishful thinking but maybe a 21 year old or however old he is maybe is starting to get it. His D play and back checking was impressive to me the second half of the year.

If you're not sure, watch locker clean out interviews ---

  3. The more I dissect this, the more I point the finger at Housley.    When your team doesn't have anybody worthy of the Captaincy... you better have a head coach with a very very strong personality to get everybody pulling in the right direction.   Housley is not that guy.

Do you think ROR gets traded if a guy like Babcock, Gallant, Tippett or Tortorella are behind the bench... nipping all this squabbling Sabre's stuff in the bud before it ends with All-Star talents getting shipped out of town for nickels on the dollar?

Let's not lose sight of the fact that all these locker room issues are happening under Housley's supervision.    But Phil is teflon and everybody loves him because he's not Dan Bylsma (who took a less talented Eicheless for half-a-season team to a 20 point better finish).

Happened under Bylsma, too -- and Roy

Anyone wanna now say that Botterill got fleeced on that SJ deal with Kane?

1st and 4th for expiring contract, getting fleeced, how so ?

and, in the spirit of secondary benefits for those tank lovers . . . . made the team worse in short term to secure last place and win lottery and get Dahlin

  4.

    @ByMHarrington
Conference call with Tage Thompson...He says he's happy to get an NHL chance and not be "pigeon-holed" like he was in St. Louis, a veteran team that couldn't tolerate mistakes. Of #Sabres:  "They really have big plans for me here to play a lot and put up points.

Not every move is a HR for a GM -- as for J Bot, I've liked besides the Mittlestadt and Dahlin pick:

Prospect depth that was added on D (Pilut, Hickey and Samuelsson)

Undid the Goalie mistake GMTM made (Lehner), signed Hutton to give Ullmark right NHL development path and added depth in prospect pool with UPL

    Scandella trade

Adding Sheary for a conditonal 4th

Strengthening Rochester to create winning culture in AHL and proper development time for prospects

Not crazy about . . . you can fill in the blanks

  5. Hamilton has also called Reinhart and Risto uncoachable. His interpretation of interpersonal relationships on the team has no value to me.

And not for nothing, but what if O'Reilly's problems with Eichel were justified?

Maybe they are justified.  But, if the so-called "culture" is an issue between 2 of your best players and you need to pick one, you pick Eichel every day and twice on Sunday over ROR.

Pham talked about on-ice observations, not sure anyone noticed the same (i.e. celebrations, body language etc.)

Either way, it's clear that J Bot is ALL IN on Eichel, an up tempo style and building through winning at all levels, oh yes, and he loves Swedes and Americans

  6. Well, Jeremy Rutherford reported the Blues were trying to trade them for awhile.

I wonder if O'Reilly had the audacity to tell Jack he should contemplate playing defense once in awhile. Maybe O'Reilly was hurting the room because he was demanding accountability from others, and wasn't getting it. There is as much evidence for this as there is any of the other nebulous stuff out there. This also a part of why I hate even talking about the room. We have no freaking clue. Neither do the beat reporters.

PHam said ROR would ignore Eichel during on-ice celebrations and even said that he was told to "cut it out" -- he also said that he thought ROR had a problem with Eichel, but Eichel didn't have any issues with ROR

The Pham interview places more blame on ROR than Eichel and goes far enough to sound like ROR was petty and even jealous

  7. That's because he isn't a journalist.

True -- but, Strickland said past veterans who played with Jack had issues -- well, that number is pretty small, so, it would have been easy to press and say, Forward, Defense or Goalie ? --- etc.

My guess is it was second hand -- Strickland heard from one of the Blues that heard it from an ex-Sabre

  8. I don't understand all the outrage at JBot ?

GMTM created a mess when he tried to short cut the rebuild and placed all his chips on ROR, Kane and Lehner to drive the ship

    It clearly hit an iceberg

It takes time to undo the damage --- J bot has gone a long way at achieving that and setting franchise up for long term success, which was the goal from the beginning

Create a winning culture, build through draft and develop players

  9. Ok I'll bite. Hamilton shows you who he is in every article and radio appearance. He doesn't require much evidence to begin a narrative that he will belabor for months. He also has trouble distinguishing events/facts with his own opinion. I feel for the other on air personnel that have to bite their lips during his segment.

    +1

I stopped listening to Pham several years ago.

Not only does the guy have an agenda, he is generally ill-informed

As for ROR, I doubt he has a bad rep within the league, he wouldn't be a Team Canada regular if that were the case

  10. I would think ROR's value goes up significantly once Sabres pay the $7.5M bonus.

A team, essentially gets ROR for 5 years and $25M cash, with cap hit of $7.5M/season --- with cap at $80M, that is very doable

I'd like Sabres to keep ROR for another year to allow Casey to develop playing 3rd line minutes and allows our other centers to get better at FO's --- we reassess next off season where post-July 1, the numbers again get even better

  11. Speed is the flavour of the month. It’s useful and it’s important, but it’s just one weapon of many.

Evander Kane is much faster at carrying or chasing the puck than ROR or Freeman’s other favourite turtle, Reinhart.

But the turtles are much faster at getting the puck or themselves to where they need to go because they are much more efficient at processing the game than Kane will ever be.

It’s not how fast you skate, it’s how fast you play.

    Amen

  12. Haven't looked at the Kim Pegula thread yet as I am traveling. But this thread is REALLY getting away from what is important: the SOB that took over the Sabres business/operations/non-hockey personnel overlord job who, upon the 1st home (preseason) game under his dominion had the f###ing bench doors not close properly blowing up the Kulikov experiment; who also SOLD A HOME game to the league and the Rangers; who also is a self proclaimed maketing Supra Genius came up w/ "Sharpen Your Swords" as their slogan; and also managed to sell at tops 25% of the WJC tickets FINALLY GOT HIS ASS CANNED. THIS IS F###ING AWESOME & means that FINALLY we might actually stop having upper Sabres management start to put winning at least on par w/ making money.

F### Russ Brandon & the f###ing horse he rode in on.

Name ONE thing on the hockey side of PSE's empire that didn't go to #### after Russ took over. Would be the 1st that was mentioned. Hopefully we lucked into Botterill being good, but HE was recommended to the Pegulas by the league not Brandon. (Though being a former Sabre (for roughly 10 more games than PA), Russ probably felt he was good for marketing regardless.) Russ never (as far as we know) told the Pegulas that they couldn't let him leave the building, nor did he tell Jason how to schmooze the Pegulas (again afawk).

You nailed it, just multiple that rant by 10X and you'll have the Bills' fan perspective, since he had a couple decades to that fanbase over, literally !

  13. I think some on this board fail to realize why a relationship between the PRESIDENT of the team and virtually any subordinate is never simply "unprofessional" it is always a form or harassment because of the power dynamic.  Educate yourselves, listen to women who have been through this before, read the accounts of others who kept silent about behavior out of fear.  Calling this unprofessional is guy code for "it's no big deal" that's why Joise left.

  14. If you think that in a modern organization that (presumably) has policies about coworker relationships between different levels (like my company does), a President that doesn't report relationship(s) and then lies to his boss about it doesn't have consequences you're the one that's being naive.

Time will prove me right, i.e. this is much more than a consensual affair with one subordinate

The sources on here and on TBD who are actually pro-Brandon say as much

But, go ahead and ignore the reality and defend

As for modern org, read my previous posts, OF COURSE it wouldn't be tolerated, my point was there is more to it than a consensual relationship

  15. No one has reliably reported this is as a sexual harassment case. Message board rumour-mongering is not a reliable source.

Which is the best argument for owners hiring competent people and getting out of the way. Imagine the advantage that would represent if a team tried it.

I still think president of (team) operations and president of business operations is being conflated here. Kim's not going to be Marge Schott.

The (extremely vile and sexist) differentiation was made yet again yesterday in the Pegulas' statement. Kim will be doing her thing on the business side and Terry will be overseeing the teams.

Nope. We do have a Michael Hunt though.

LOL, if you think Russ resigned for ONE consensual relationship with ONE subordinate you are naive beyond comprehension.  There is so much more to this and even the most ardent Brandon supporters admit that on this forum and TBD.
