  1. Sounded like a lot of Devils fans in the house tonight. Didn't think there were that many fans in NJ, let alone western NY.

Would be totally down if it is a strategy from tanker season ticket holders.

TANKERS: Do you draw the line at going to home games and cheering for the other team?

Looks like Vogl picked it up too. Reflection of a smart fanbase.

Many Sabres fans want Buffalo to lose, but they haven’t voiced their opinion inside the arena. That changed Friday. http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/sabres-nhl/sabres-home-loss-to-devils-is-a-crowd-pleaser-20150320

  2. Reinhart, the second overall pick in the 2014 draft, is expected to join AHL Rochester if his junior team is eliminated from the playoffs, reports the Olean Times Herald.
    Spin:
The WHL regular season is almost over, and after claiming a wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, the underdog Kootenay Ice will face either the Calgary Hitmen or the Medicine Hat Tigers. Even with Reinhart, the Ice aren't considered a heavyweight team, so they're unlikely to go deep into the playoffs. If the Ice get eliminated early, Reinhart will be allowed to come over to the AHL and help the Amerks as they vie for a playoff spot. Reinhart saw nine games with the Sabres this year before being returned to the WHL.

    From Rotoworld.

Would be very exciting to see him playing in the league he should have been in from day 1.

  3. How are there non-tankers on this thread? There are 12 GAMES LEFT. It defies logic to be rooting for this team to win. Go be rah rah team in the Prospects section. This is a therapeutic and holy place, a retreat from this test of hardship.

Zona has a hell of a schedule coming up. Tomorrow night at home against Colorado appears to be the best chance for them to fall a couple steps behind in the CHL (other than against us - twice - : / ).

  4. I am a bit worried about Sam's slight drop off in his Junior numbers this year. Kootenay is a bit weaker statistically this year too, maybe he's having to do more with less. My hope is that his body is changing due to working out and adding weight for next season. A previous comparison to Igor Larinov may be the most interesting one I think about. An intelligent 2 way game that makes everyone else shine seems to be his style. He also plays a 200 foot game and all special team situations. His leadership qualities will probably earn him a letter down the road.

Previous high draft picks whose numbers didn't grow when sent back to Jr. are Spezza who dropped off a bit in his 19th year. Bobby Ryan's stats stayed the same for his post draft years. Tavares peaked in his 16th year and actually dropped off in his draft year.

I think he starts as 2 or 3 C in October.

I was thinking the same thing with Sam. It was pretty clear he needed to work on his body. Maybe this became the priority, far above bolstering his draft status with points. Still, after seeing how out of place he looked in the pros, followed by his below standard play, I can't say I'm free of concern .

  5. Doing interviews during the hours of the trade deadline isn't doing his job IMO. To me that is irksome. The guy is charge of turning around the worse team in hockey. Plenty of time for interviews between 3pm and the draft.

I wish I knew how to use kissing lips emoji.

Really? Leaders often use the media to drive negotiations. Even if this wasn't the case, I think the incredible amount of manpower behind him can handle two and a half minutes.

  6. First time poster so take it easy!  Usually just check in after looking at the Bills news.  Used to be a big Sabres fan growing up watching Pereault, Robert, Martin, Gare, Shoney and even that guy named after the best donut place ever.  Also enjoyed watching the great Edmonton teams and a wide-open NHL.  Enjoyed the Hasek years because he'd routinely do things I'd never seen before but frankly, increasingly lost interest because the NHL allowed the sport to become a low-scoring, tame affair by letting Garth Snow wear equipment that covered the whole net and not countering the neutral zone trap stupidity.  I'd pay $50 to go to a Sabres game and fall asleep just as quickly as watching a soccer match.

I've enjoyed the pro-tank, anti-tank banter here but, honestly, the tank is what is making Sabres hockey interesting again and bringing me back to the sport.  I like our young players and am looking forward to getting a first line together that could actually be one of the best in the league and worth watching.  Because of the screwed up NHL draft system its not the Sabres fault that they need to finish dead last.  If the Sabres don't finish last, knowing Buffalo luck, they will get the 3rd pick or worse and we will end up with some stupid defenseman or average winger.  So I am rooting against them for just 20 more games.  After that I plan to return to watching a much more interesting team.  Yes, I feel a little guilty but it's the only way to go.  If the Sabres don't get McEichel than I'm afraid we are in for another decade of pretty boring hockey.  This town deserves one of the best players in the NHL again!

My question is...is McDavid really that much better than Eichel?  What are the odds either of these guys is a head case and won't pan out?  I've been assuming from the talk they are 1A and 1B but read some strange things about Eichel.

Welcome back. This year has certainly reinvigorated my interest in watching 16 and 17-year olds skate!

I don't remember another draft where the top two were such sure things. There is no doubt broad consensus that McDavid is number one, and most other years Eichel would be. Not sure which "strange things" you've heard, other than freshman college kid enjoying campus life a bit, but both are praised for their mental game (both on and off-ice) just as much as physical.

  7. The Sabres are perfectly capable of winning the Shart with Neuvirth as our starter the rest of the way. I'm inclined to keep him unless the return is good.

I'm with you PhD. No way he stays this hot when team is getting outshot and outcorsied as bad as they were today.

If he stays then, I wonder if priority for TM will be to sign him during final two months. Get a good price on him and have that position settled going into next year - at least in theory.

I would tell him he can be a part of the future, but that starts July 1. My other point, is that the goaltending can be addressed much more easily than finding top 6 scorers. If Nolan's use of Neuvirth threatens that I would rather see him go.

Agree 100% goalies are easier to find than top 6ers. Like PhD said though, just don't think Neuv is as big of a tank killer as he's been in last couple weeks. I think it's good he's taken the reigns. Now tank on and get best of both worlds. A gamble indeed, but one I think worth taking.

  8. The thought behind it is quite simple.  It is wrong to set up to lose on purpose.  I find it hard to believe you didn't see that as the point behind the opinion before it was told to you..

I understand the prideful sentiment I guess yes. Although losing on purpose is different from losing. And in typing that sentence, I realize my error and apologize for the leading question (considering tank intends purpose). What I really wondered is if there were people honestly disappointed with a loss with 20 games left. But I understand if this has been beaten to death.

I think we can agree that almost an entire year of this can make a fanbase act in peculiar ways.

  9. Come on, man... you had it right with your earlier post in this thread, so why not let it go?  Don't confuse the fact that some of us aren't happy with losses means we don't see the endgame.  I'm not doing this again.

The game is over, so it's not the tank bit that irritates me.  It's the continued need by tankers to essentially insult the non-tankers for not agreeing with them.  ###### that ######.

Was truly curious. No insults from me. Just an exploration of psyche.

  10. The idea that goaltending is an issue only has merit when the o and d start to come togethor. Serviceable goalies can be had relatively easy. Halak, Dubnyk, Crawford, hell Miller was available this summer. Goaltending is the least of our worries. Scoring is another matter.

Corey Crawford of the Blackhawks? He's their franchise goalie. And I wouldn't feel comfortable with Dubnyk or Halak in the playoffs.

You can't react to things only once they are an issue. You need some sort of plan. Proactive, not reactive. If we get McEichel next year plus free agents, we could very well make the playoffs. I'm not saying it's likely, but there is a possibility.

TM has high opinion of talent that was selected in the first round. He obviously felt Neuv could develop into a quality tender if his mental game matured. Maybe TM bet on the right time in the kids development.

I guess the broader question is: does the benefit of additional negotiating time with a guy who might be the goalie for this turnaround outweigh a possible tank killer?

  11. Anybody else starting to think that keeping Neuvirth might be the move? Obviously he is the only thing keeping this tank from finishing strong. And the tank should remain the number one priority. But we also need a backstop moving forward, and he is really starting to look like a NHL goaltender. Maybe his handling this year, the confidence instilled by Murray, and the realization now that he's a true number 1, has honed his mental game. He's always had the physical tools. Similar arc to his ex teammate Varlamov. I know he's a FA, but there is an advantage to having a window of contract negotiations for the remainder of the year.

  12. Yeah yeah. This team hasn't had a super stud on offense since the LaFontaine days. One of the big two in this draft would help end the worst two years of watching this team since I can remember. Why blow it now on meaningless wins for a 3rd or 4th pick that probably won't see the NHL ice for another couple of years.

Yea. I really don't understand the motivation of non-tankers. Defies logic.

But I always thought the purpose of the gameday thread was to focus on some positives or negatives of that single game (for the most part). A place to come to escape from the misery of the current tank, and comment on the daily state of our roster. Couldn't tell the difference between this thread and Carrion.
