  1. JohnC,

I think you should ask a few women about how innocuous they felt Milbury's comment is.

What if he had made a snide comment about the Sabres?  Leafs fans would have loved it, but you and I would be irate.  The issue here is not how you feel about the backlash, it's about how the victimized (women) were made to feel.

Boy talk about a slippery slope. We went from an offhand comment (which is most likely true), to thinking milbury doesn’t think women are good for anything else, to he hates women.

    Good lord.

Semantics.  I don't believe Milbury hates women.  He just needs a refresher on why they are at least the equal of males.  Especially these days.

You are without question missing my point. Milbury didn't make a comment that reached the disqualifying level that Brennaman said about gays while calling a baseball game. He should have been immediately relieved of his duties. There was nothing misogynistic about Milbury's comment. It certainly was an outdated view but no malice or crudeness was intended. Your comment about the confederate flag makes my point. I agree with you on your position but I disagree with you that just because someone has a different view and perspective on it that they shouldn't be allowed to express it.

Your comment about me being an ideologue says more about you than it does about me. Based on your comment I'm clearly less ideological than you are because I'm willing to be receptive to other view points where you are less receptive to them. That is a classic attribute of an ideologue.

Saying Milbury's comment was less greasy than Brennaman's is a pretty slippery slope for me.  But under duress I'd probably agree.  The fact of the matter is just because Brennaman's was worse doesn't excuse Milbury's.  And, yes, Milbury's comment was definitely misogynistic.  And it was outdated even if no crudeness or malice was intended.

I'm totally with you on people being absolutely free to express their heartfelt opinions.  I just think they should be held accountable for them when they do.

You are mistaken that I have a blind spot on this cancel culture mentality. I'm very aware of what my position is and why I hold to it.

You are correct that my stance over Roenick is very similar. Both Milbury and Roenick are commentators who are hired not to be bland but to have an edge to them. Do they periodically go over the line? Undoubtedly yes. Milbury sometimes says foolish things. So what! When you are on the air for many hundred if not thousands of hours it is not surprising that foolish things are said.

The bigger issue for me is that there is a growing mind-set that if someone says something controversial or stupid the morality mob is ready with the rope to lynch the offending party. Creating a climate of fear to express one's thoughts is a bigger problem than saying dumb things. Again, that is not a blind spot---it is something I am very conscious of.

There is indeed a growing mindset about being careful about the words and sentiments used to express ourselves and our views.  This is not a bad thing.  This is THE thing.  This is our current reality.  We are finally meaningfully and collectively rising up against racism, police violence, and multiple forms of intolerance and injustice.  It is no longer cool to say something is "gay" that you find distasteful like it was in 2005.  It is no longer cool to use the N word.  It is no longer cool to use the F word for gay males.  Confederate flags and memorials are finally being seen for their traitorous and anti-American nature.  And misogyny is no longer cool.  This leads me directly to your 2nd bolded sentence.   These previously accepted violations did exactly what you are bemoaning.  They created a climate of fear for the victimized.  The fact that you are resisting the progress that is happening now does not make you a victim.  It makes you an idealogue.

  5. A thought occurred to me yesterday about the herd immunity discussion upthread.  Some were questioning how only a 20% infection rate could result in a plateau of new cases.  There was some speculation that maybe an additional 50% of the population was either just plain immune to COVID or had gotten it without any symptoms or realization, which is a very sensible line of speculation to me.  But what happens if the discussion is not just biology driven and introduces behavior into the equation?  In a complete oversimplification, let's say there are 3 kinds of people: 1)first-line responders (on paper probably more susceptible due to proximity and number of interactions with infected people and places), 2)the careful people (who wear masks and social distance and do all the right things religiously), and 3)the group I will somewhat euphemistically refer to as the reckless (those who refuse to wear masks, regularly go to bars and parties, etc.).

My assumptions are that group 1 can limit exposure due to proper equipment, sound protocols and good training (granted less so for police and firefighters vs. medical personnel).  Group 2 can keep exposure pretty close to 0 (provided not in an urban area, or not having a job where working at home is possible, etc.).  So maybe the herd immunity really only applies to group 3.  Once that group achieves 80% infection, or whatever the herd immunity exposure percentage requires, then there are very few people left who are in any real danger of catching it.

I'm sure there are many holes in this line of reasoning, and many reasons why it would be extremely difficult or impossible to prove, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.

  6. The Chambers Brothers hit a grand slam with this one in 1967...

    Time has come today
Young hearts can go their way
Can't put it off another day
I don't care what others say
They say we don't listen anyway
    Time has come today
    (Hey)
    Oh
The rules have changed today (Hey)
I have no place to stay (Hey)
I'm thinking about the subway (Hey)
My love has flown away (Hey)
My tears have come and gone (Hey)
Oh my Lord, I have to roam (Hey)
    I have no home (Hey)
    I have no home (Hey)
Now the time has come (Time)
There's no place to run (Time)
I might get burned up by the sun (Time)
But I had my fun (Time)
I've been loved and put aside (Time)
I've been crushed by the tumbling tide (Time)
And my soul has been psychedelicized (Time)
Now the time has come (Time)
There are things to realize (Time)
    Time has come today (Time)

I'd sub in the Senators for the Leaves.  The Leaves are and have been irrelevant since I was born.

Very true.  My main reason for having the Leafs as my hated #2 is the Toronto media.  I was born in Toronto and still have lots of family there, and they are all totally ***** beyond hope in terms of objectively assessing the Leafs' chances in any given year.  Every year is "The" year for them because the media says so.

Curious, why Filly more than Bastan?

I grew up having to watch the Bruins crush the Sabres seemingly every playoff season in the late 80s early 90s, until the day Brad May made Ray Bourque look like a traffic cone.

In 1975 the Flyers beat us in the finals.  I was a kid when the 1974-75 Broad Street Bullies were the embarrassment of the entire sports world (and that includes the East German she/male steroid experiments that netted an incredibly disproportionate number of gold medals for East German "women" in multiple "amateur" Olympics back in that era).  Don't even get me started on the actual city of Philadelphia and the animals that live there.  We don't need to build any walls down south.  We need to build a wall around Philly!

Google "move movement philly", or Frank Rizzo.

Here are some "highlights" from the Eagles --> https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/eagles-fans-are-the-absolute-worst-and-here-are-9-times-they-proved-it/

The current Eagles stadium (and the one before it) actually requires/d an on-site jail and a magistrate to be present for all games due to the constant level of insanity.  They make Raiders fans look like nuns.

Philly's nickname of "The city of brotherly love" is way more egregious than North Korea's "official" name of "The Democratic People's Republic of Korea".

Thanks for asking!  I always feel better after getting to rant about Philly!

The hit on Scheifele was deliberate. His skate comes up and just misses his achilles tendon. The Jets will be lucky to win one game without Scheifele. No 1C or 2C.

Tkachuk should be banned 20 games minimum. Muarice called it a dirty, filthy, intentional hit with his skate. Look at the replay, he lifts his skate, puts it down and lifts it again. No Buff, Trouba, Chiarot and Tanev to a lesser extent makes this team not very tough. The Jets aren't built for the playoffs. Here's hoping we win the draft.

Yeah, I think it was deliberate too.   Tkachuk should be suspended, but knowing the NHL, I doubt he will.

  10. I'm really starting to enjoy the PLL (Premier Lacrosse League).  It's field lacrosse (outdoors) with 7 teams playing in a tournament somewhere in Utah.  Any fans of NCAA lacrosse will almost certainly dig it.  NBCSN is where I'm seeing it.

I'm all in on the mask thing. It's such a minor duty to take on for the benefit of my neighbors. I wore one for 3 hours straight yesterday at the flea market. It's fine and anyone can wear one anywhere once they get over themselves.

Thank you for summing it up so succinctly. It is so ***** easy to wear a mask and it's so beneficial for everyone around us.  People who refuse to wear masks in public...I wish I knew a way, or a line of reasoning that would make them question their choices.

Just watched NHL Network’s Countdown show which showed their list of the top 25 lines of All-Time.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the French Connection line as # 2.  That’s really saying something with the history of the NHL.  Those of us that got to see them play were truly blessed.

    #1 was Howe, Abel, Lindsay.

Notable was Gretzky, Kurri Tikanen #7.  You’d think the AllTime leading scorer and one of the best goal scorers of his time would be higher.

I would rank that Gretzky line ahead of our guys.  Esa Tikkanen was was a guy I would go to war with.  The only reason I hesitate to say they are #1 is that I didn't see the Howe line ("The Production Line"), and my dad and my uncle raved about this line a lot back when I was a kid.

Mario Lemieux was on two amazing lines, also.  Lemieux/Jagr/Stevens and Lemieux/Jagr/Francis.  The Stevens one scored 365 points in 92-93 with Mario missing 22 games.

I stuck with The Leftovers for the entire first season and kept waiting for it to get good. It didn't, IMO. I was surprised when it got renewed.

I made it through the entire series.  I get where you're coming from.  There was a certain angst that never lets you really "enjoy" it, but I'm glad I watched it all, and would do it again.

Watched the movie Doctor Sleep. It’s the sequel to The Shining.
Wow was that good! Very well done.

Wow.  First I heard of this.  I need to check it out.  Thanks!

For all of you "The Shining" fans, check out "Room 237" if you haven't already.  Outstanding documentary about the movie delving into the multiple aspects, theories and influences behind it.
