The Sabres have the league record for longest losing streak, the longest playoff drought, and they are getting close to the longest playoff series win drought (they're at 18, Panthers were 24). The Sabres are only three years behind of the Leafs for longest cup drought.
The Sabres are, without a doubt, the Worst franchise in NHL history.
... and they aren't getting better.

One thing I've heard multiple times from people who were born out here is they go visit Ontario in the summer and they are just not ready for the humidity. They come back hating the place for the experience they have with that weather. Just not ready for it. After 25 plus years out here I have issues with humidity now too. It's rare here.

Out of a 100+ year old league, with over 30 teams, this one is THE WORST EVER.

Byram hasn't filled an obvious hole, and now we have a Mitts-shaped hole in the forward ranks.
As others have said, this trade only makes sense if Adams as a plan to fill that hole.
Top 4D is more important than Bottom 6F.
You wanna give Joker, RJ, Mule, or Clifton top minutes? Would get us the best draft picks, if that's what you want.

At some point the Sabres need to field a capable roster today. Not a roster full of kids who might be more capable tomorrow.
Edit: I will add that I think Sabres only had above average top 6 play from Tage, Mitts, and JJP this season. The rest were middling middle 6 at best this past season.
I think we need help at the top of the roster too.

Krebs was given a good look this past year. I saw nothing indicating he should be given the 3C job. He simply is not ready. He isn’t even a good 4C. Is this a year we win or not?
We need to bring in a Lindy type defensively responsible of two way center that wins face offs and can provide secondary scoring. Krebs is not that at this time.
At 20 years old, Byram played top minutes on the Stanley Cup Champs. He wasn't along for the ride.
The point of playing Krebs at 3C is to figure out what kind of return we can get for him.
Right now it's looking like a 4th. We need to bump those numbers.

There was no reason to move him at all. Just pay him. But Kevyn didn't want to admit that he made a mistake anointing Tage and Cozens to the top two centers. In fact if Casey commands $7 million or more it proves my point.

How?
We have a surplus at Top 6 F and a lack of Top 4 D. Top 4 D is more important than Top 6 F. Trade for Dmen makes sense here.
I'm not one to defend the Sabres organization, but this is one of the times the team did something logical.

There is no 1B C. There's a 1C, 2C, 3C, and 4C.
Cozens has proven to be better than Mitts and is 2 years younger. We already have him and TT under term.
That leaves 3C and 4C. At the price Mitts will bargain for (6-8 Mil AAV), he doesn't get a spot. Plain and simple.

That's not why they moved him. Avs needed a 2C. They have solid dmen (Makar, Girard, Toews). Without scoring, they would drop to the Jets in 4.
