  1. No idea if this is why, but Opening night there are 2 giveaways.

    Quote

The first 5,000 fans in Alumni Plaza will receive a “Let’s Go Buffalo” rally towel.

    Quote

All fans in attendance for the game will receive a commemorative “RJ Way” street sign as a keepsake of the night.

Maybe the voucher is for the RJ Way sign?

For giveaways it's typically not a "everyone gets one" kind of deal, just something they give everyone as they enter until they are gone.

Not sure why they need to do a voucher though

Will you still think that way if Levi and the rest of the goalies shat the bed and you aren't making the playoffs?

Yes. My opinion won't change. I'll be disappointed at another lost season. But if I only enjoyed this team when they won/made the playoffs I would have bailed on them years ago.

I have not been happy at the goalie moves KA has made, but I'm also not convinced he had better options than what he did. I'm convinced KA is trying to build us not only a playoff team, but a perennial playoff team.

That doesn't mean he'll be successful, but so far I'm cautiously optimistic. I think we'll make the playoffs this year. I think we'll be frustrated with the team at times too. I think it's very possible we'll fall short again if they go through large slumps.

There are no guarantees in sports. Injuries happen (we've already lost Quinn for a large part of the season). Players don't live up to their potential. Hell even with bad goaltending and defense we almost made the playoffs last year anyways. That's why they play the games.

I'm also not trying anyone to convince anyone I'm "right" about anything. It's just my opinion.

I’d take a goalie of his caliber no matter the contract.  Good teams always find ways to navigate the cap.

It's not the cap that worries me. It's the term. Unless we get a Stanley cup with him as our starter, I feel like that kind of move handcuffs our future. I'd really only want him for 2-4 years.

The other factor is, not only would we potentially be saddled with a much longer contract than I'd like, we would also have needed to give up some major assets just to get him. Likely young (read: cheap) prospects that could be adding value to this team in the future when we can no longer afford some of our older players and have to trade them or let them walk.

At some point you need to make some of those calculated risks. Given how our defense played most of last season, and during the preseason this year, I'm not convinced we're a high caliber goalie away from a cup. It could end up the difference in us making the playoffs this year. It's always hard to say.  Maybe it would. We'll never know. I'd still rather be a bit more patient, even if it means missing the playoffs again this year (which I don't think we will).

Seems highly unlikely and actually not possible that 5-7 guys immediately jump to the NHL post draft. 1-3, sure.

I probably paraphrased badly. They said:

    Quote

For the last few years, we've only seen around five to seven new draft picks get NHL games at any point during the years

That doesn't necessarily mean those players all stay in the NHL though. I'd assume it's including 9 game trials. But it's not my article. I was just repeating what it said.

How many 2023 draft picks are set to be in the NHL for game 1?

Not sure how many. Bedard and Fantilli both made it. It sounds like Leo Carlsson is also expected to be playing this year, but is apparently on IR to start the season.

This article from June lists some of the other possibilities, but I didn't run them all down. https://thehockeynews.com/news/which-2023-draft-picks-could-start-the-season-on-nhl-rosters

It also said the last few years only 5-7 players tend to make the jump right away. They didn't have Benson on their list, but it seemed to be limited to the top 10 picks.

I have to say I am thoroughly surprised we didn’t add a goalie and a better defenseman in the offseason. Yet still are bottom of the league in spending.

Even if we were always going to role with Levi I thought for sure that meant we’d spend in FA on one if not two big defensemen to protect the kid.

I just don’t know how we did nothing and are still at the bottom of league spending.

I'm not sure there were goalies out there to be had. Pretty much all the FA goalies stayed put. And the 2 being that were reported of being on the trade market didn't go anywhere.

Defenders I'm not sure what options we had in free agency. Really I'm just not sure if we mostly stayed put because they aren't being allowed to spend like the Bills, they are expecting to need the cap space to pay our upcoming players, or simply because they didn't find anyone they liked for the price it would cost.

Time will tell if  that comes back to haunt them or not.

  7. I can't wait for the Sabres to hire someone from this forums to be GM or Coach to finally show us how it's done. We'll have a Stanley cup in no time.

Personally I'm not going to hold the drought against Adams or Granato. This team has gotten better each season under them both. Not as quickly as I'd like sure, but I think the future looks bright. It's easy to sit here on the internet and dream up fantasy scenarios of players we want to have as it's as simple as playing a video game.

I find it sad at how upset people are at this team when we haven't even played a single regular season game yet.

  8. I think it's way too early/too small of a sample size to draw any conclusions about the defensive pairings. I'm definitely underwhelmed so far. If this goes on for a long stretch and he doesn't try swapping up pairs, then I'll be more concerned.

With regards to goaltending I'm no more concerned now than I was before. Which is to say a fair bit of concern. We have a rookie goaltender who could be great but is being asked to do far too much. I don't have a ton of faith in either of the others to be a consistent backup. I'd give the edge to Comrie though

  9. I'm hoping Benson's play just motivates Savoie. The timing of the injury really sucks and we'll never know what the competition would look like if both of them played most of the preseason, but so far his younger teammate has made the case to be on the team ahead of him.

Maybe he’ll bounce back to the player see saw two years ago when he played relaxed and simple and added a little O here and there.

Wouldn't that be great. I'm not as down on Joki as some are here, but I'd prefer him as a 3rd pair guy and have someone better with Power. If he can step up his game and change my mind all the better.

  11. 1. Sabres win and point totals 43-31-9 - 95 points

    2. Do the Sabres make the playoffs and if so how far do they go? Yes, but out in the first round

    3. Team MVP: Dahlin

    4. Team ROY Levi

    5. Most Improved player Peterka

    6. Team leader in goals, assists and points: Goals: TNT, Assists: Dahlin, Points: TNT

    7. NHL Award candidates (Norris, Vezina, Selke, Calder, Richard, MVP etc)? Any winners? Dahlin for the Norris, Levi for Calder but neither winning

    8. How many players score 10 or more goals? Who? 9: TNT, Skinner, Tuch, Dahlin, Cozens, Mitts, Olofsson, Peterka, Krebs

    9. How many players score 20 or more goals? Who? 4-5: TNT, Skinner, Tuch, Cozens then one of Peterka (most likely), Dahlin or Mitts

    10. Does anyone from Rochester get callup and stay with the Sabres (such as Pominville back in the day)? Not unless we have a long term defensive injury. Then Ryan Johnson maybe

    11. Which Eastern playoffs team (s) miss the playoffs and who replaces them? No clue really. Bolts and Rangers out. Sabres and Detroit in

    12. Stanley Cup champions 2023-24? No clue really. I don't really follow the league that closely beyond the Sabres, so I'll just guess based on who was good last year and say the Devils make the jump this year. Maybe that's wishful thinking because I like Lindy Ruff

    13. Other predictions you'd like to share? Nope

  12. Per: https://www.nhl.com/sabres/news/how-to-watch-buffalo-sabres-preseason-games-2023

    Friday, Oct. 6 vs. Pittsburgh – 7 p.m.

Watch: MSG (Dan Dunleavy and Rob Ray; pregame starting at 6:30 p.m.)

    Listen: WGR 550 (Radio Simulcast)

I figured I wouldn't get to watch this one, but like the last MSG game, it looks like it will also be on NHL Network for anyone who has that/is out of market.

It was announced yesterday that Levi is starting (which I find a bit of a surprise after how bad UPL played, I thought it would be Comrie). Both Cozens and Eric Johnson were out practicing with the team too.

So far I haven't any other roster announcements. I'm hoping they put out most of their starters.

If you think he is going to be the 12 games of good more often this year you keep him. If you think he will be the 11 bad games more often this year, you dump him.

I think it's the latter, but I worry the team is expecting the former.

I would have loved for UPL to come out like the good version we saw on those 12 occasions and make himself our backup. Age/contract wise he is the better fit. But he didn't do anything to instill confidence for me.

really believe that they're going to run with 2 in Buffalo

I hope you're right. I think they will keep 3, but I don't want them to. Ideally we can get UPL back to Rochester. But if we lose him to another team, I still think it's better than keeping 3 goalies.

I'm hoping all the public facing talk about all 3 is just to try to help KA trade Comrie or UPL if they feel like UPL can't get through waivers.

Either way our current goalie pipeline is a mess.

Agree that Johnson is the actual 7 (maybe Granato has a soft spot for Stillman and he's the 7 w/ Johnson the 8); but he will be Ra-cha-cha's #1 when the bullets start flying unless somebody in the back 6 gets IR'd.

Still expect them to keep 8 D up with the 8th probably being Clague but maybe Bryson.  Doubt we see the 8 play at all unless there are 3 injured D.  The fill in's are Stillman and Johnson and not necessarily in that order.

I would agree if they somehow don't end up keeping 3 goalies. If not, though they only have room to keep 7 on my list.
