They aren't any better at all.

    Lyon replaces Reimer - that's a wash

Norris replaces Cozens - that's an improvement only if Norris actually plays 70 games.

Joki and Clifton have been replaced with Kesselring and Timmins.  An upgrade, but not really enough to move the needle

Doan replaces JJP.  This is a significant downgrade and there is no honest argument that the offense will be better with Doan over JJP.

Ultimately, the players chiefly responsible for the terrible in zone D play and goaltending are still on the roster - Power, Byram, Samuelsson and UPL.  That $25 mill of wasted cap space on bad players once Byram is re-signed.

Congrats Kevyn, all you did this off-season is make a bad team worse.

It's clear Adams et al are banking on young players improving. It's not an unfair hope, but I would like us to actually improve the roster and then have the internal improvement move us from bubble to competitor.

Power should be better in his zone. Quinn should bounce back. Benson and Kulich should improve. Kesslering may have a breakout with more opportunity.

Don't underestimate Doan being a better forechecker and defensive player than JJP. Actually JJP being a rush player means he actually may not flourish on better teams that dominate possession.

Regardless, this team needs to get another one to two top 6 players and a top 4 D to actually be competitive I think. We should have used 9/26 picks / Byram to do it.

I only quoted this post.  Just a stupid statement by Adams all around.  How about you let the arbitration award be handed out and then you let him walk?  Everything about the JBD situation is the perfect example of how broken this team is and how they clearly don't think ahead.

    No plan for Byram.

They got JBD as part of the Cozens deal (filled a hole at the time) but clearly had no idea what they were going to do. Now they see younger guys (don't block the youth!) and cheaper guys (by $100k? That's fine tuning EEE).  They let the guy walk before they had to do anything.

Whatever.. this is the most I've spent talking about this team in the past few months and likely the most I'll spend talking about it for the next year...

If the arbitration is below a certain value (about $4.8 million) the team can't walk away. So if he's given $1.5 million, you're stuck paying that for an 8th defender.

If this guy was basically a thrown in for the Norris trade, it makes sense they never saw him as more than that.

He also signed for basically league minimum - he clearly isn't well regarded.

I gotta wonder what Alex Tuch is thinking so far.  I can’t believe he is impressed enough to want to consider any long term extension, but rather hoping GMKA sending him elsewhere before next season.

Honestly, if I was Dahlin and I see what we've done so far, I'm going into the GM's office and saying if we don't make the playoffs you're trading me

Have not seen that ANYWHERE.  Not doubting you, but do you have a link?

They ARE shortening maximum contracts from 7/8year to 6/7 year.  But haven't seen any reports of the age/service level to reach FA getting reduced.

No, you're right. I mis-remembered the max contract as UFA age. My bad.

What’s there to review. They can sign a 43 year old for 8 years if they want to. Any cap games they could be trying to play with that term are already covered in the CBA. He’s counting against their cap after he retires.

    Not if he LTIRetires right?

  6. I quite like this trade...

Im a bit of JJ-skeptic. I think he's a good supporting piece but him and Thompson reminded me of Kunitz and Crosby (obviously not to the same level).

We got a young big-two way right shot defence man.

We should be trading Byram for a top 6 player and ideally trade 9 for another top 6 player.

Imagine if we could sign Gavrikov and our top four is suddenly:

    Dahlin - Kesslering

    Power - Gavrikov

    With a top 6 of:

    Tuch - Norris - Thompson

    Benson - Rossi - Someone

    Not awful...

He doesn't fit in the top 6 (would rather have Benson on Cozens line than Skinner) & seeing what they just did to reshape the bottom 6, he sure as #### doesn't fit on the bottom 6.  Would've been fine keeping him 1 more year, but they obviously didn't see a fit for him & having a $9MM F sitting in the pressbox waiting for a top 6 injury doesn't exactly scream healthy team dynamics.

I don't mind the bottom line's thing being that they are fast and hit stuff, whilst being a bit rubbish doing anything else. It gives Lindy a tool to wield.

That said, the third line feels a bit like the spare-part line. Krebs and Greenway are closer to fourth liners than decent third liners. And Zucker is fine but doesn't have a thing he does particularly well.

I'd rather have Benson - Cozens - Quinn be our defensively responsible wild card third line, and then have Skinner and two other players as our second line.
