  1. Lindgren did not show the progression necessary as his scoring dropped below his draft year his two post draft seasons, compared to Hagel.

With the rules surrounding CHL players and NCAA about to change, there needs to be changes made to the CHL-NHL Agreement. NHL Teams should get prospect rights for 4 years and teams should get complete control over where first picks play after their D+1 Season

    This.

At the moment I don’t see any reason to promote Kevyn Adams. And frankly, even if this team gets to 100+ points next year, promoting Adams to POHO would be a tough pill for me to swallow.

For me he needs some sustained success. Because right now he’s only sustained bad to mediocre.

He acts as a buffer between Hockey Ops and Terry Pegula.

I read an article that said Tulsky basically ran things but didn’t have the people skills to deal with the GM personalities around the league. Waddell was the guy to talk to the other GMs. I would imagine that setup will continue and an old school figurehead will be named Carolina GM and fill the same role.

Friedman mentioned Chuck Fletcher for this role on 32 Thoughts Podcast yesterday

I wouldn't call him a gritty player, but I would call him a brave player.

If the Sabres lose possession of the puck with Quinn on the ice, he will spend the rest of shift trying to get the puck back.

He and Benson are pain in the ***** to play against that works for me

Apologies.  Meant Karmanos.  Nightengale didn't "sound" right, but was drawing a complete blank on Karmanos and Ventura.

(Been a long weekend crawling around in the attic trying to fix some crud that shouldn't need fixing.  And yesterday it was friggin' HOT up there.  (Nearly passed out on the ladder getting out of there.  That ended THAT job for yesterday.)

No worries-Mrs Brawndo has me doing a year’s worth of projects during mine severance time. I have to start my new job to relax.

IF the team does well the next 2 years, expect that Adams becomes the PoHO, one of his 2 primary AGM's moves up (probably Nightengale), and Ruff moves into an advisory role to Adams if he's ready to stop coaching.  And if Ruff wants to continue coaching for a year or 2, that advisory role remains open waiting for him to fill when he's ready.  (Personally expect he'll be ready to move out of the grind in 2 years, but who knows, while Lindy tends to be adaptable to circumstances he also can have a stubborn streak.)

IF the team does poorly / treads water the next 2 years, expect that Adams is out, there's a new GM that Ruff has input in choosing if not outright choosing, and Ruff becomes the PoHO.

Jason Nightengale shouldn’t get any type of promotion, if anything he should be removed from the front office entirely. He and Jerry Forton are two of the least impressive members of the front office and have their positions because of Pegula Nepotism. Giving credit for the Sabres improved drafting over the past few seasons to Forton is the equivalent of giving all the credit for a group project to the person who did the least amount of work.

Luca Del Bel Belluz was the Sabres Front Office consensus pick for Pick 41 in 2022, when all of a sudden Topias Leinonen was the name announced.

The true sign of a person’s value to a front office is other organizations requesting interviews for open positions, both Jason Karmanos and Sam Ventura have interviewed wit( other teams. Nightengale and Forton have not.

A restructured front office should look like

POHO-Adams/Ruff or Ruff as Senior Advisor

    GM Jason Karmanos

    Associate GM Sam Ventura

  7. Friedman and Marek spoke on 32 Thoughts about Tulsky and how he is heavily involved in every decision that the front office makes as Dundon listens to him. They wonder if any outside GM candidate would want to enter into this arrangement and felt that removing the Interim Tag from him would be a good option

Granted, since he came to find analytics, the Canes have been very good.  But he was HORRIBLE in pretty much all his stops prior to that (Atlanta, US Olympic Team).  Want nothing to do with him.

Believe Carolina getting good is in spite of him, not because of him.

Tulsky is reason for Carolina’s Success

Do you really think TB is going to trade him or if they do, would they trade him inside the division?  Do you think that Adams wants to take on the next 7 years of his contract at 6+ a season after he didn’t re-sign Mitts to avoid taking on another long-term deal. Also add that Cirelli gets trade protection after next season and so far isn’t as good offensively (best season only 45 pts) as Mitts.

By the way, I mentioned Cirelli earlier as one of the few decent centers without current trade protection who could help our current lineup.  However the longterm deal he’s under may be a non-starter for Adams who has yet to commit to a contract outside of “his” players beyond 3 years  in either trades or free agents.

Cirelli is a cost controlled asset for seven years, that would fill the role of 3C on this team. That alone could entice Adams to move assets as he would be on the team for awhile. His highest offensive output was 45 points, but he is a very good defensive forward, he would be the match up center that the Sabres are lacking.

His age and experience would be a huge plus for the club. In terms of not trading in the division, BriseBois has not had a first round pick since 2022 and is not scheduled to pick in the first two rounds until 2026. The Sabres will to pay a higher price, but have the assets to do so.

This type of move would be out of character for Adams, but then so was the Byram Trade

Sure, but let’s not dismiss it as a pipe dream either.

This is how good teams have stayed competitive and mediocre teams have made the jump.

You’re not going to sign Lindholm and Joshua for anywhere near that money, but you can find the next Lindholm and Joshua.

If you want to contend, you have to.

This is where your analytics department should come in and find diamonds in rough.

They do need to add some more pro scouts having Jeremiah Crowe as the Director of Pro Scouting because he is the only one in the department isn’t it.
I do think this has at least partially contributed to the poor UFA acquisitions.

Interesting.  I'm kinda skeptical that they'll trade any D prospects though, and that they'll trade Johnson in particular.

I doubt they will trade a D prospect because Johnson is the one who would fetch the best return, and even then I don't think the return would be sufficient.

Also, I think KA had to make a pretty compelling sale to Johnson, who was only weeks away from being a UFA.  I don't think it would look good to trade him one year later.

IMHO if they trade a prospect, it will be one of the forwards -- probably Kulich or Savoie, as those are the 2 that I'd guess will return the most value in trade.

I agree -- I think the most likely outcome is that Johnson is #8 after camp, with Bryson #7, and that Johnson spends most of the year playing in Rochester, which is what he should be doing unless there are a few injuries on D in Buffalo.

Actually he didn’t. Buffalo was always his priority based on his relationship with Nathan Paetsch. He wanted to enjoy his college graduation and spend some time with family and friends that was the delay in his signing.

The addition of Byram changes the dynamic of the defense corps as that is another left handed puck moving defender. RJ might like an another opportunity where there is clearer pathway to a regular NHL job.

For the right deal, Adams does not hesitate to move him

On a garbage team with bad linemates and expectations of being a 2C. I'm not sold on Laughton being all that and everything but if you want to add people you need to think of who might actually be a guy we could get as well as just wanting guys. There are better guys but with higher price tags and harder to get.

Evolving Hockey’s Model had Laughton in the one percentile for defensive metrics this past season.
Even on a bad team putting up that number in a Torts System is a major red flag.

Here’s Skinner Player Card for comparison
