  1. There has never been a more appropriate nickname coined than Afinogennis. When he's on, he's great fun to watch and very effective. But when he's off, yeesh.

I really disagree on this. Max always had his head down and was constantly putting his teammates offside because of it. Ennis is a much more complete player, sure Ennis was offside on the disputed Samson goal (albeit airborne to keep from getting jackknifed)

But Ennis also created it away from the puck by going to net and screening the goaltender.

That's a play Max would  never make.

  2. The burn on this one was Lindy was going to call the time-out anyway.

It was a what the hell challenge.

Ennis didn't have a skate down, but he didn't have a skate down anywhere,

he jumped airborne to get through obstruction.

A good lineman isn't going to blow that down.

    It wasn't a mistake.

    It just sucks.

Someone's gotta go back through the vaults and figure out how many career points Gretzky really has, get rid of the ones that were offside. Is it offside or offsides?

seriously, put an asterisk next to all his records.

  3. A few thoughts:

Referring to these terrorists as masterminds is a little wacky. All it really took was munitions and ill intent.

I'm not going to call the kids who attacked the Columbine school masterminds either.

There was nothing relatively clever or innovated about  these things other than it is possible to do,

and they showed a rudimentary synchronization.

    It is not sophisticated.

Terrorists really have little ability to project power over time.

ISIS as a movement is weak. But they have the capability to do things like this.

France is set to vote next month. Enter Marine Le Pen of the National Front.   :(

I spent the morning consoling a French friend.

Her family is well. Her sister was walking the Champs Elysee when it happened - safe but rattled.

I had the profound sense from her that it is hard to be here (in the US), when your heart is there.

They will close the borders even if it means pulling out of the EU she thinks.

When the French say enough, it happens all at once, she said. You'll see, she said with some sadness. You'll see.

  4. Pretty interesting that Coco is apparently ahead of Pysyk in the rotation.

For the tank conspiracy theorists, it's worth noting that Coco seems to be contributing quite a bit more to this year's team than Meszaros and Benoit contributed to last year's team.

Coco had a nice game. He's been playing and skating well. He was a solid pickup.

  5. Korab was ornery, but not a great skater, The combo of Shoney and Korab was nasty and Geuvermont was also nasty.

Also there was Larry Playfair..., name cracked me up brcause he never did.

I'm glad you mention Geuvermont. He doesn't seem to get much remembrance, but he was a very solid 2 way player.

  6. All but 3 posters hate the dude. I can't imagine how his perception could be lower.

This is not true. My love of Mike is greater than 100 warm summer nights by the side of Nathan Paetsch.

It is greater than the Buffalo News Nolan Pratt portrait over my tool bench .

Far more treasured than the Rory Fitzpatrick signed golf iron towel tied to my golf bag.

Mesaroz and Benoit are a distant memory. Alexander Sulzer - never had the same sizzle.

We like Mike, and want him healthy and back the press box as soon as possible. :)

    Seriously, he's a good 7.

  7. Something in a comment section, more than likely fiction? Probably not worth the link.

And how many "Christians" want to "blow those people off the map" and "bomb them back to the Stone Age"?

I heard the Facebook is taking some heat for activating some kind of emergency feature on the site after the Paris attacks so that people could "mark" that they were OK. But they didn't activate it for similar events in the Middle East, namely Beirut. It really is indicative of a fundamental problem. We should care just as much about the innocents in Lebanon as in France. I'll hold my breath waiting for the Sabres to bathe the arena in the Lebanese colors. It's a shame, really. The good people of the world are essentially the same. Whether it's income inequality here or religious fanatics there, it's the same theme: a few ###### holding everyone else down.

I've heard arguments that we should have an equality of feeling for those in Beirut and that it is racist that we don't.

However, we have no NATO collective security pact with Lebanon, Lebanon is not our 9th largest trading partner, nor do 3-4 million Americans visit or work in Lebanon every year.  We just don't have the same ties. Even my ethnically Lebanese friends have never been to Lebanon. Nor do we have a infrastructure in Lebanon to respond.

It's something other than bigotry that it doesn't get as widely reported. however,  It led the news on NPR last week though.

  8. I absolutely hate 3 on 3 OT.

Yes, it makes it more likely a goal will be scored.  It also makes it 0% likely that anything resembling good hockey will take place.  4 on 4 was exciting and still looked like NHL hockey.  Why not just make OT 10 minutes of 4 on 4?

Anyways, not my favorite game of all-time.  Glad we got the point.

It sure beats the shootout IMO. It still looks like NHL hockey to me because I remember when it was NHL hockey.

  9. And that is misleading. Everybody knew in 2008 that the status of forces agreement was to be renewed before it expired in 2011. The President in 2011 wanted our troops out and got what he wanted.

There was no way the Iraqi parliament was going to approve an extension even if Obama had wanted to.

Anyway....since it has come up. Politifact was dealing with the question in MAY

    http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2015/may/18/jeb-bush/obama-refused-sign-plan-place-leave-10000-troops-i/

Anyway.....part of SOFA negotiated by Bush was this:

Article 24 Withdrawal of the United States Forces from Iraq Recognizing the performance and increasing capacity of the Iraqi Security Forces, the assumption of full security responsibility by those Forces, and based upon the strong relationship between the Parties, an agreement on the following has been reached: 1. All the United States Forces shall withdraw from all Iraqi territory no later than December 31, 2011. 2. All United States combat forces shall withdraw from Iraqi cities, villages, and localities no later than the time at which Iraqi Security Forces assume full responsibility for security in an Iraqi province, provided that such withdrawal is completed no later than June 30, 2009. 3. United States combat forces withdrawn pursuant to paragraph 2 above shall be stationed in the agreed facilities and areas outside cities, villages, and localities to be designated by the JMOCC before the date established in paragraph 2 above. | 16 4. The United States recognizes the sovereign right of the Government of Iraq to request the departure of the United States Forces from Iraq at any time. The Government of Iraq recognizes the sovereign right of the United States to withdraw the United States Forces from Iraq at any time. 5. The Parties agree to establish mechanisms and arrangements to reduce the number of the United States Forces during the periods of time that have been determined, and they shall agree on the locations where the United States Forces will be present.

There was no way an extension was going to be approved by the Iraqi Government. Al Maliki asked for the Obama administration, what even Obama wouldn't give,  to extend the agreement: Criminal jurisdiction over US forces to get an agreement through the Iraqi parliament. It was a non-starter (Al Maliki knew that). There was no political will from the  Iraqi's for US troops to stay -  no partner, no agreement.

  10. Notes:

Zemgus was lost in OT. Concussion?

    Two well coached teams.

Needed more from Sabres bottom 6. Delauries played a nice game, but the bottom 6 left sharks too comfy.

    Colliacovo is really playing well.

EICHEL was getting a ton of attention from San Jose, first team to really game plan him to try to freeze him on the walls.

I think Ennis might need a few days off. He was a human pinball last night.

  11. Very good post. It is an example of politicians running our country with poll results. Never ends well.

It's well thought out. But inaccurate. GW Bush signed the status of forces agreement agreeing to withdraw all US troops by the end of 2011.

Opinions all .... should / can a US President order the killing of a US citizen abroad with a drone strike targeting that specific citizen?

The intersection of hawkish posture and the Constitution.

If it is an enemy combatant, sure.

  12.

Completely agree on the Saudis and their neighbors footing part of the bill.

Well, "deeply flawed" doesn't necessarily equal "not viable."

When your best available partner was pro-Iranian, I think deeply flawed and not viable both apply.

  13. Interesting point raised by a military friend of mine:

Hollande declares this an act of war. SInce 2009, France has been back as a full member of NATO. Will Hollande Invoke Article V?

    Good news.

I've heard from former friends/co-workers in Paris as well.
