  1. Tyler Ennis ......hmmmmm........last year Buffalo scored 153 goals.

This years team is on a pace for a whopping 172......

Take away Ennis 20 goals,  and thankfully, we'll be back to the team we know.

    It's a Carrion move.

It's hockey. Players try to play through pain they shouldn't. Players slump.

I'm still betting he rights the ship.

  2. Can't link to it now, but Barnaby was tweeting at Ray (and someone else -- May?) last night about how a word he'd used -- "acrossed"? -- was only a word in his hometown in ONT (wherever that is).

I know these guys are all friends to varying degrees, but it was maybe sorta sh!tty of Barnaby to do that. He must know that Ray feels the heat.

I'm fine with leaving Ray on the ice level and reporting on on-ice emotions and what's going on at a visceral level... chirps, emotions, injuries, etc.

But get somebody that can analyze a bit in the booth with RJ.

There is a lot of things happening that can be broken down

that I just can't see from the broadcast camera.

  3. He was fine at even strength. It's the PP and 3-on-3 time where he's a net negative IMO.

I can't say I noticed a bad play by him on the PP.

He missed a couple shots in OT.

But he played a fine game overall. IMO.

Well, I thought it was a terrific hockey game.

    My game notes:

    - I know the Sabres have put up a lot of shots on goal in quite a few games this year, but last night was the first time I thought the opposing goalie won the game for his team.

    - I have always liked Ennis and do not agree with the "get rid of him" pitchfork crew here.  However, he is clearly struggling mentally right now.  Last night he made one bonehead play after another.  I don't think he needs to sit, and I don't think DDB will sit him.  He'll work himself through this period.

    - Kane looked a bit slower, likely due to the knee brace.  Still, I thought Eichel-Reinhart-Kane performed well as a line and was dangerous quite a few times.

    - ROR-Moulson-Gionta was also effective -- giving the Sabres 2 lines that produced scoring chances for the first time in a while.

    - Larsson-Ennis-Foligno was less effective, although I agree with dudacek that Larsson was hustling.  Foligno has gone quiet the last week or so.

    - Ullmark has a really good glove hand, good positioning, vacuums up pucks well and reacts quickly to make nice shoulder saves -- but once he's down, he's slow to get back into position.

    - I thought the SO ruling on STL's goal was correct.

    - Pretty lousy execution on the Sabres' 5-on-3 opportunities.

    - If the Sabres keep playing that well they are going to make the playoffs.

I really thought that the Sabres carried play. Allen had a hellava game.

The 5-3 chances were the difference.

I don't want to be the perfect to be the enemy of the good here. Team play has improved exponentially.

The Sabres can hang with any team in the league.

Too early to start throwing players overboard.

  4. A Facebook exchange with someone I ride bikes with:

Phong:  "And you are willing to take those Syrian MEN into your home?"

Me:  "In all seriousness, Phong, what if the U.S. denied entry to to Vietnamese in the 1970s because they might have been infiltrated by the Viet Cong? This is a very similar situation."

I expect he'll unfriend me over that.

    Apologize with "Sorry, Charlie."

  5. The season is only 1/4 th over, we are 3 points out of a playoff spot.   The only thing this team needs is to find chemistry.

Moulson , Girgensons and Ennis look lost in their new roles.    New trades won't help our chemistry, we shouldn't do anything untill the trade deadline anyways.

I don't really agree with this, we take alot of perimeter shots, we need to generate alot more High quality chances.

They are often shooting from good spots. but there is no screen.

  6. This is a little late, but my girlfriend for the third straight week wants to watch The Notebook.  My brain cannot handle anymore cliched "love stories".

What did you do? C'mon. You must have done something to get in the Notebook dog house. There is something you missed for sure.

  7. Bowman says return the blueline to where it was in the 80s making the O zone smaller.

More room in the neutral zone, less bottled play in the middle, longer passes in transition,  less offsides, faster entries, more shots on the rush.

  8. I'm still angry today. Screw it. I don't need to be rational on this one; I just hate the rule. I don't need to be rational on this one I just hate the rule.

So a set tic-tac-toe play to an Ovechkin camped out in the zone would be ok?

If it wouldn't, what is the criteria to determine whether the offsides players was "involved in the play?"

No, they can't. Once play is whistled dead (for a reason other than an apparent goal being scored) or the puck is out of the zone, the possible offsides is no longer reviewable.

  9. I really didn't mean his game is identical, just the way he has inconsistent vision and will get himself in trouble by not using his teammates. As good as Ennis is with the puck, he thinks he's better than he is and it often times gets him into trouble. Infuriating every time. And no defensive game to speak of.

Ennis has turned into a solid defensive player. He hits, checks, steals. I'm not saying he's lockdown, but he's a solid in all zones. He's putting it all out there, just not scoring of late.

  10. Uh, no. Offsides is pretty cut and dry. There isn't supposed to be discretion.

I disagree. obstruction away from the puck on entries on short handed teams isn't going to get called. Ever.

And it happens on every entry.

Linesmen have a tremendous sense for the game. You can get pulled across, impeded, pushed. They've always let some things go. A guy jumps to save his legs, It doesn't get called. That's discretion, no linesmen has that quick a call.

  11. Are you saying it wasn't offside? I think this board needs to hash out the offside rule and talk about situations where the skate is above the line. The skate has to be in contact with the line for the player to be onside, no?

It's offside, but like icing, there should be some discretion. Taking away all discretion from linesman is bad for the game.

From what I saw, Ennis is getting obstructed without the puck at the blue line. Defender sticks out leg. Instead of keeping a skate down and potentially getting jackknifed, he jumps. 9 out 10 times, a linesman lets it go. This changes the game IMO.
