  1. i think it's the bills' way of waving the middle finger way up in the air to not just the jets, but all jets' fans.

i don't like the pick-up for him actually playing, but the fact that the bills had the balls to pick him up after he *just* got released for taking out their supposing starting QB is just ... there's some large sense of satisfaction in the bills' ZFG mentality. i really kinda like it.

  2. Anyone else surprised the Habs and NYR haven't really made any moves yet? Or the Blues for that matter? Some pretty big contenders staying put with their rosters so far

Except that you're forgetting that the Habs just picked up the almighty Zach Kassian. That's a pretty big deal, right there.

On a related note, I see that Hodgson was signed by the Preds. Alright ....

  3. yah, the more i see what deals are being accomplished, the more i wonder if the silence *is* due to contract length being required. green is *terribly* old, but a 3 year deal makes him 32 when his contract is up ... and with all the young talent we have, at 6M/year, it's ... dumb.

i dunno. whatever. others have already said it, but we made our splash on friday. if we do nothing with FA, i'll be slightly disappointed, but i won't cry.

  4. It's still early; there are six rounds left.   But I woke up about five minutes ago and had to ask myself whether yesterday really happened or I just went on a bender.

I'm not hungover.  Ergo, yesterday really happened.  And FA season is yet to begin.

    Wow.

We were at a local amusement park on my company's dime when draft time rolled around. Installed the NBC LIve extra app specifically to watch the first part of the draft. Watched Murray proclaim the pick, listened to some intereviewy stuff, then watched Bettmann approach the podium. And then I screamed like a girl when he said that the Sabres had just acquired ROR. Literally screamed. EVERYone around me looked at me like I should be pulling a dead, blue child out of the wave pool, and instead, I'm sitting there with this sh**-eating grin on my face, staring at my phone. I leaned over and kissed my wife and said, "We're going to the playoffs next year. Almost a guarantee. Free agency's coming next week, and if we do well there, it's a done deal."

    She couldn't have cared less.

Oh well. She makes up for it in spades elsewhere. :)

  5. We're taking the whole fam to Rush out here in July. I've been trying *super* hard to avoid set lists, but I know a couple of songs that have been played. Based upon those, I'm hoping that the set list holds for our show. Specifically, Jacob's Ladder. That's been in my top 5 Rush songs since the late 80s.

  6. The Cup broadcast is seriously bumped to NBCSN because of American Ninja Warrior? What a terrible TV rights contract. I'm assuming that will be rectified if NBC keeps the rights when it's time for a new deal...right?

In an ideal world, they *won't* keep their rights and it will go to someone who can actually cover the games. Not just some of them--ALL OF THEM. and not on cable. this whole thing of maybe showing a couple handful of games on NBC during the first 3 rounds is stupid.

  7. being the geeks that we are, and having the friends that we have, we took a different twist on the war-memorial day. yesterday marked the 38th anniversary of the premiere of star wars. that being the case, we had a star wars marathon. managed to watch eps 1-4 (the original intent was to watch eps 1-6, but with six kids ages 10 and under (four of which are 7 and under), the attention span just wasn't there, so we ended up taking a lot of breaks between movies.

which is fine. the point was just to get together with some old friends and hang out, so mission accomplished there.

  8. No.

    :P

     liar. :)

I'm the complete opposite. The more talk there is over Babcock, the more indifferent I become.

Wake me up when all this BS turns into wins on the ice.

oh i get it. but seriously ... babcock coming to buffalo would be one of the greatest signings of all time for us. all i can to is refresh twitter and listen to GR. work?? pffft. there will be none of that today.

  9. Actually it's the other way around.  The Himalaya was created by two tectonic plates colliding.  If anything, new mountains are forming.

after the last earthquake, mount everest is actually one inch shorter than it was before. that region is due for some major quakes, as neuvichs pointed out. two plates banging into each other ... there's gonna be some new formations.

what terrifies me is the yellowstone caldera that blows every 600,000 years. the last time it blew? about 600,000 years ago ...

  10. Weird, right?  And they've been oddly aggressive about it.  The one yesterday left a voicemail saying they wanted to schedule me for an interview next Tues.  I didn't apply to your job and you don't even know if I'm interested, but you have the audacity to try and schedule me for an interview?  So very stupid.  They must just be desperate for people and contact everyone who adds a resume or something.

Thanks, Chris... I've used Indeed some, but hadn't heard of dice.com.  I'll check that one out.  There are several others geared towards scientists, but a huge majority of the postings are for either junior / entry-level people or PhDs.  I fall into a rather unfortunate grey area of highly experienced but "not qualified" based on the MS vs PhD.  I'm tempted to start apply to PhD positions and write in the cover letter why they should consider me anyhow.

That totally worked for my wife. She saw speech path positions all over the place, but hadn't gotten her masters yet. She called around and said almost verbatim, "I saw your posting for a speech pathologist. Would you also need a speech aide? I'm working towards a master, just haven't gotten there yet." And lo and behold, one school hired her. So yah--definitely lay out your case. It's bound to strike a chord with someone. :)

  11. :(  Sorry, shrader and Derrico.

The ongoing job search continues.  I don't know about other lines of work, but Monster.com is f*cking useless for science.  The image is a typical list of jobs they send me that inexplicably match the search terms "research, scientist".  I uploaded my resume on Sunday to make it searchable by employers, and ended up deleting it yesterday after receiving three emails and two phone calls from insurance companies wanting to interview me to sell policies.  WTF?  Why would someone with a MSc and 13 years of experience in biomedical research have any interest in selling insurance?  Waste of everyone's time.

And the Terminix inspection Monday afternoon confirmed what I thought (and then some):  active termite infestation at the house.  The worst part is it seems the pieces of paper I have from the sellers indicating the damage was old and had been treated were probably BS and my home inspector missed it, because they damage they found is more than what would be expected from 2-3 years (I bought the house almost 9 years ago).  Nearly every floorboard in the basement had some degree of damage, and the little buggers were eating the insulation, too.  Somewhat miraculously, while the damage was widespread, it was not severe enough in any one place as to cause structural issues and require replacement.  All the insulation had to be removed, floorboards were sprayed down with some kind of repellent, bait stations placed all around the perimeter of the house, and new insulation installed.  Set me back almost $2500 even after a decent sympathy discount.

First off, my sympathies on the termite issues. Our house had an infestation at one point, and we're *still* finding signs of it, even after 11 years of living here. The previous owners did literally nothing to fix the damage--just hide it with paneling and stupidity. So, yah--termites suck, but so do homeowners who don't fix their mess, so good on you for getting it fixed!

Second, Monster is a joke. It hasn't been useful for damn near a decade. If you want real job search power, check out indeed.com or dice.com. I've found those to be the most useful in searching for relevant jobs in my field.

  12. It would be pretty sweet to knock out Philly, Toronto, and Boston en route to the Finals. But we have a lot of bad memories with a lot of clubs to avenge.

    Pittsburgh

    Ottawa

    Montreal

    Carolina

    Islanders

We can knock out different teams every year as we build our dynasty.

Is there a particular reason why dallas isn't on the original list? what has chicago ever done to us?

  13. I have this weird feeling he's our man.

    hockeyface.gif

I'd rather cut off my d*** and feed it to Lucic, Chara, and Marchand than have this douchebag as a coach.

There's low, and then there's "no coming back from the evil that resides in us now" low. Julien is the evil that lurks under your bed as a child, haunts your worst nightmares as an adult. He's the devil in a suit coat and tie.

  14. I don't think this will be the end, nor end well when its all said and done.

It's over and done. Murray couldn't care less what Nolan says. He's moving on and Nolan won't coach in NHL again

I't so over and done, but not because Murray couldn't care less what Nolan says; if it really is over and done, it's because Nolan is a class act who won't take a dump on the Sabres--recognizing that the whole is not represented by one GM.

  15. i will admit, my initial, knee-jerk reaction to nolan being fired was rage. blind, unadulterated fury.

then i had dinner, let my mind settle, and after a good roast and some potatoes, i came to the conclusion that it was simply inevitable. as has been mentioned on here and other boards umpteen millions of times, nolan isn't GMTM's yes-man; he's his own man, and i don't have a problem with that ... but Tim did, and in the end, it became too great a chasm to bridge. do i think ted could have gotten the job done? probably. hell, there were plenty of flashes of brilliance this season--sometimes only in-game, sometimes for stretches at a time. but make no mistake about it ... there were definite signs of congealing and this team starting to play like one unit. and teddy's the one who engineered that.

now that he's gone, i'm curious who they'll bring in. babcock? maybe. possibly, but not probably.

i'm more excited to see how lindback progresses. there were times over the last couple of games where he reminded me of ron hextall, between the aggressiveness after the play, the passing of the puck, coming way out of the net to play the puck ... i mean, obviously he's no hextall *yet*, but he has some good potential.

  16. I'm going to nominate my mom to be the next head coach. i mean this in all sincerity. she took two (count 'em .. .TWO) generic, garden variety kids, and and practically single-handedly turned them both into fine, upstanding, morally non-reprehensible citizens who have managed to stay out of jail AND, on some small scale, contribute to society. now ... imagine what she could do with a whole TEAM of younglings. we're talking world domination within 30-35 years. no, it may not lead to a stanley cup, per se, but imagine the implications--an entire hockey team of gentlemen--not your chris neils, or shoebottoms of yesteryear, but bright, intelligent, respectful young men who would, in turn, be the mentors for the upcoming generation. hence the beginnings of world domination.

    just my $.02.
