Your record is who you are. The Sabres are the worst organization in sports right now besides maybe the NYJ in the NFL. This is an outlier of everything you could do wrong running a franchise in the worst possible way. Hopefully the new guy will bring some sanity.

Watching the cup Finals first game in a small market took me back to some brief moments like that as a Sabres fan. My kids are in there 20's and could care less about how far away we are, but I'm just sad about my broken franchise.

  2. Grumpy old man rant. To superimpose Herb Brooks speech over the American NHL all-stars was just so wrong. "Miracle" happened during the cold war, when we were the good guys, the kids were amateurs and a miracle did happen. That was just lazy and wrong on so many levels.

  3. A GM is part of the sales and marketing effort with some sales skills. They need to convince (sell) other teams GMs and players that Buffalo is where they want to be. They also need to foist (sell) our bad assets in trade. If Kevin Adams grilling in front of the media produced that press conference, imagine him in the last two sentences.

  4. Oh my. Thank you for finding this. I remember watching this on a black and white TV. It was high drama. I was 12 and I think this was the moment I went from "hockey, kind of cool" to "I'll run through a wall for this team." I idolized shoney. Loved the French Connection. This remembrance of that moment is just so great. Again, thanks for finding this.

I don’t hate the guy but I do feel like he strained our salary cup for half a dozen years before having a PR resurrection as a “great leader” on a team that folded every year before missing the playoffs. He sure as hell never took a pay cut, like a Von Miller.

He then gets traded to the cup winner where he contributes little, gets benched, gets another PR storyline, and then his team wins.

Peca I would’ve felt happy for if he won a cup. Hasek I kinda felt happy for in that it legitimized his legacy. But not Okposo. This “great leader” wins the cup as a hanger-on.

    This. Exactly.

  6. This thread is fascinating. My mid 20's kids all had Briere, Drury and Miller jerseys and I took them to games throughout the first 10 years of the drought. Then I noticed they didn't want to go anymore and claimed the Sabres always put me in a bad mood. I'm sorry I ruined them. I took my son to the Devin Levy debut against the Rangers and thought I was getting him back. He poked his head in last night and said "Dad, how do you watch this "S##$3!"

I would ask that of any new fans. We don't even have RJ to sugarcoat this turd.

After being hosed by ownership/management for 10+ years, it's going to be tough to win back the fans without actually making the playoffs.  Hell, we'll be closing in on almost an entire generation of Sabres fans that have never experienced playoff hockey.

I've taken my family a few times prior to COVID traveling from the Rochester area. The place was dead and both times were big losses. My kids didn't hate it, but it's not like with the Bills when they were bad, where at least the tailgaiting was fun. I won't take them again, but it's a chicken / egg thing. They have never know the Sabres to be playoff good although when they were little they wore slug Briere/Drury/Miller gear. they were too young to remember that.

I'll also offer that my 65" HDTV cost less than a game with the family and the televised product is so much better than it used to be.
