I overall think Dahlin is the best player on this team.ย  I think last year he should have gotten more Norris consideration and might have been a top 20 player in the entire league last year.ย  HOWEVER, I agree with you as far as this year.ย  He started out 'good' but not as good as last year. The past 2 weeks his play has taken a considerably drop.ย  Frustration? and Injury?ย  Who knows, but all year he has been a step behind last year's play, and the last 2 weeks he's taken another 2 steps back.

Maybe because they made him wait a few years for the big payday, whereas Adams gave Power the big contract after one season, completely unnecessary! How'd that work out?

There are no trades that are going to solve this, no management or coaching changes on the horizon. This is the team we have, a bunch of soft, skill players that rag-dolled 8 out of 10 games. High pressure, high physical game plan is known league wide to crush the Sabres. And that's just the plain truth.

My question is this, and I'm not joking or being snide when I ask this.....

How much longer before these current players start to lose their love of the game? Because remember, these kids have now known nothing at the NHL level but an environment of losing, of winning nothing. I have no answers, but I see this coming, and we're most likely closer to it than many want to admit. I can't see Dahlin here past next seadon if this continues, that's where I believe the exodus will startย

Sounds like a cancer, doesn't it?

Love this tune; the opening guitar riff, lyrics, drumming,...all of it! I was not aware of these guys. This is now in the top ten of my playlist that I listen to each morning when I get my walking in. So, thank you for posting it! One never knows where or when he may stumble across a previously hidden gem, completely by serendipity. May a similar fortuitousness bless our beloved hockey team!

Don't forget Sabretooth.ย  Terrible mascot.ย  Needs to be fired immediately, if not sooner.

    This is not a thing.

Think what you want, but it was a "thing" with Ryan O'Reilly, Jack Eichel, Taylor Hall (whatever you may think of him), probably Linus Ullmark, and probably Sam Reinhart.

  5. "Losing is a disease. Ah! But curable". I'm taking the long view, in that even if they win tonight, it only reinforces the maddening inconsistency, whereas losing; losing big in particular, opens the floodgates of public scorn, ripping the bandaid off of the festering pustule of the Pegula s**t show, precipitating fandom outcries of, "guillotine!, guillotine!". it's in the air.

I didn't like the contract to be honest. I thought it was about 500k too much and about 3 years too long. At the time though, I like others, gave Adams the benefit of the doubt. The team looked like it was improving and Samuelsson looked like a solid top 4 stay at home defender. Still, he hadn't played a lot of games and if memory serves, hadn't scored an NHL goal when he signed or something like that.ย

    Let's look at his numbers.ย

His rel corsi% has never been positive. That's right, if you look at his 3 half/full (he gets injured a ton) seasons, he has never once finished with a positiveย  rel corsi% and it isn't particularly close. This measure on ice corsi for - off ice corsi for at even strength. Samuelson has this: -8.6%, -11.5%, and -9.7% and just so you have some perspective, Dahlin's last 3 years (this year included) are: 9.1, 9.4, 12.9% so those of you who feel as though Dahlin is actually trying would be correct. The team is better when he is on the ice than when he is off and for Muel it is inverted. In fact the only Sabres defenders with worse numbers are!?!? You guessed it, Big Johnson with -15.8 and Clifton with -9.4... sorry connor I guess you are 3rd worst.ย

But wait, that's just shot attempts at even strength and we all know that shot attempts don't always mean good shots right? So let's look next at xgf% which is XGF/XGFA... Here we get some better news! So that's nice right? Now he has never had a positive xgf% and this year he ranks... 4th behind Jokiharju, Rasmus Dahlin, and Ryan Johnson. Erik Johnson btw is a SHOCKING -20.9 to this point in the season. No other player is within 10 of that for their career. Anyways back to Muel who is at -1.9. He is terrible at preventing shot attempts but seems to be okay at preventing xgf attempts. Shots on net each equal a tiny percentage and add up to goals, he seems to stop the most dangerous ones which is good! There is hope.ย

The bottom line is this, he isn't one of our top 4 defenders. He certainly is not good enough to play with Dahlin. He keeps getting rolled out there due to a perception based on no actual stats, eye test, or magic eye ball analysis. I would make this thread about Erik Johnson who is literally a black hole but he's as good as gone where as we have Samuelsson for another 6 years after this one.ย

Now if you want to say he is a defensive defender so that explains the shot issues... no. If he was so good at defense, he should be shutting down plays and turning the puck up ice. Instead, he is not shutting down plays and his passing is atrocious.ย

You want a young guy who should sit, I give you Mattias Samuelsson. Ryan Johnson is flat out better. If anyone has the player cards for Johnson and Muel I would love to see them. I let my subscription lapse cuz money so don't have access currently. Either way the coaches are not making decisions to win, they are making decisions because veteran status, favoritism, perception, and emotions. It's time for this staff to grow up or get out because the players aren't the only ones acting young and childish.

    ย

Listening to Samuelsson, I've always thought his heart is in Philly, to the point that maybe subconsciously, he doesn't really want to be in Buffalo?

Terry Pegula is 72 years old. You'd think that of all of us, he'd be at the top of the "just one before I die" list. Apparently, he'd rather line his coffin with his billions than spend it trying to see a Stanley Cup hoisted in WNY during his last years on earth. This once proud franchise in a laughingstock, Terry, and the blame lies squarely on the shoulders of the obtuse dolt staring back at you in the mirror every morning. Do something now or sell the team and get the f*ck out of the way. We deserve much better even if you feel you (and we don't). Cripes...

    <rant over>

That ship sailed when he was awarded an NFL franchise.

I'm not one at all for making change 'just because' or 'to see what happens'.

But I'm starting to go to the point of swinging on a big trade.ย  Like a BIG trade. I'm not sure who would be avaiable, but a forward in their prime (24-28 years old) who is known as a hard worker, puts up consistenly 25+ goals per year, and has been on a winning team (preferably one where the forward play good Defense).ย  If you have to trade a Roster guy AND 2 of your top prospects, so be it. Savoi, Kulich, and Mitts?ย  go ahead.

Why? I am more and more convinced, despite the shutout last night, that this team doesn't know how to play team defense and NO coaching staff is going to get it through their heads. Vet guys like Okposo and Girgensons?ย  Honestly, they never were on a team where THEY were even taught how to play team defense.

Maybe you don't even need to pay that much, but how about Nazim Kadri or Lindholm from Calgary?ย  Both of them?

The futility starts at the top, with ownership; he was meddlesome from the start, bringing in the Ted Blacks and Craig Patricks, and his picks for GM's have been dismal. Now he's awol.

  9. I could put them away in a box, and just check where they are at from time to time, not actively following them, and if some how they turned into a championship calibre team, I would start following again. ย I could do this without feeling like I'm just a "fair weather fan" because I feel like I've earned the right; ย I've put in the time, going back 53 years. I've done that with the Bills.

It's always about the roster.ย  Always has been and always will be.

Ownership has nothing to do with it.ย  Never has.

It's always about the roster.ย  The person in charge of setting the roster and the men charged with coaching the roster.

KA should feel a lot more heat at some point than Granato.

You say, "Ownership has nothing to do with it.ย  Never has". Then, "KA should feel a lot more heat at some point than Granato". Where exactly is the. "heat" on KA supposed to come from? You've contradicted yourself.
