  1. Which is cool. I'm kind of annoyed with Rip for doing this stuff, though. Until the Sabs have 10 retired numbers (not gonna happen soon), let's keep 'em all under 45, ok?

Yeah, i mean i get the tradition thinking behind it. You wear whatever # you get, unless you've earned it, then you pick your own. Works real well on some teams, like the Ducks (Getzlef 51, now 15, Perry 61 now 10, Cam Fowler 54, now 4, Bobby Ryan 54) but the difference is, our guys never switch. So it becomes lame.

  2. Close call. Dudley, no. JP, if the team had been smarter, we'd just associate 17 with him. But it wasn't, so Mikey it is. Now, can he get his kid to pick a real number instead of this NASCAR crap?

I wish, but i think he's staying with #82. When it was time for him to change to a "real" number, instead of the one Rip gave him, he decided to keep #82 because he said he would of felt bad for all the fans who had bought an #82 jersey his rookie season.

  3. Not with the first overall pick, that is Reinhart all day long, but if the Islanders somehow give us their first this season, then i think William Nylander is exactly the type of playmaker this team will need going forward. The offense is horrid and has no flow. Nylander is a playmaker and creates offense like no other in this draft class and has a real speed burst to his skating. Plays a similar style to Alex Ovechkin.

  4. Robviously, Don't worry at all. Joel, for some unknown ###### reason has been on a line with Ellis and Gillies. Not exactly top tier AHL talent. He looks the part. Big, strong, athletic puck handler who wards off players with his size and skill. He'll be a good one. Hopefully, they put him in situations to succeed sooner rather than later.

It's too early to tell for sure, and i appreciate your feedback and i value it highly, but i do think there is reason to start to worry about Armia. Ever since his injury last season, he just hasn't been the same. I don't have his statistics from the Finnish Liiga after his injury but i remember reading it was atrocious. Then he followed a bad end to the season with a pretty sub-par playoff performance.

He came to state-side and played in the prospects tournament with the Sabres in Michigan and was one of the worse player on the team. I don't even know if he got any points in that tournament? Logon Nelson and Colin Jacobs got several points while Armia did nothing. Now he's not scoring with the Amerks and stuck on a line with 2 veterans, which to me (only speculating) tells me they don't feel he can be a game-changer on offense and feel the risk to too high of him being a liability defensivly if he played with more offensive players.

  5. I think it'll take a pretty big turn for anybody other than Reinhart or Ekblad to go number one. But he's in the mix right behind those guys.

You're probably right but a good WJC for him could put him over the top. The thing is, this is Reinhart's third full season in the WHL, while Leon's only second. And Leon is keeping up pace with points.

Also, should be noted, Reinhart's WHL playoff career so far: 9gp, 1g, 2a, -10.

    Leon: 4gp, 0g, 4a, -4.

Draisaitl is a more raw player, so if he does rise up the ranks, it won't be til later in the year when scouts have more of a idea about what his game is all about. I am no hockey scout, but i think he is the best player in the draft.

Boston Globe's Fluto Shinzawa on Sabres/Nolan-

Sabres’ interim coach is quite able

The odds are slim that Ted Nolan will still be behind the Buffalo bench next season. The interim Sabres coach, who replaced Ron Rolston on Wednesday, will most likely hand over the keys at the end of 2013-14, if not earlier.

New president of hockey operations Pat LaFontaine’s first order of business is to land general manager Darcy Regier’s replacement. Bruins assistant GM Jim Benning is on a short list of candidates. Benning worked in Buffalo’s front office for 12 seasons before being hired by the Bruins in 2006. Pittsburgh assistant GM Jason Botterill, who played briefly for the Sabres, is also in the mix.

The next GM will then hire his coach. If Benning lands the job, he might consider Bruins assistant Doug Houda, who has Buffalo ties. Former Bruins assistant Craig Ramsay, another ex-Sabre, would be another possibility.

Short-term, however, Nolan is the best fit for the job. Nolan coached in Buffalo for two seasons. LaFontaine, one of the most skilled forwards of his generation, played for Nolan. So did Michael Peca, Matthew Barnaby, Brad May, and Rob Ray — players who were as abrasive as LaFontaine was skilled. Nolan understands what Buffalo fans like to see.

“We’re in the entertainment business,” Nolan said during his introductory press conference. “We have to entertain people. Players get paid pretty well nowadays.

“What we have to do immediately is to get these guys to compete and work. The bottom line is we have to make sure we compete at a certain level, so that when fans leave here, they don’t feel cheated.”

Nolan’s junior experience will also help. In 2005-06, Nolan coached Moncton in the QMJHL. Nolan’s teenage charges included Brad Marchand, Keith Yandle, and Andrew MacDonald. The Sabres have four players under 20: Rasmus Ristolainen, NikitaZadorov, Zemgus Girgensons, and Mikhail Grigorenko.

“You don’t want to put a kid in a position of failure,” Nolan said. “You have to get them to feel good about themselves. If you put them against big-time guys too soon, they get burned. It hurts your confidence.”

Assuming the Sabres let Nolan go, the rest of the season will be his audition for his next job. So will his Olympic duties with Latvia. The Sabres have given Nolan permission to continue his job as Latvia’s coach in Sochi. The Latvians are serious underdogs. In that way, they have the perfect coach.

  7. Are you saying that Reinhart and Dal Colle are pretty much the consensus top two forwards? Because that's not true. I do think I'd have Dal Colle as the second forward, but he's not the consensus guy behind Reinhart. Some have Bennett, Nylander and another name or two all in the mix for that spot.

Don't forget Leon. In fact, Leon could still go #1.

  8. Nothing wrong with having a Darryl Shannon.

    Absolutely.

We have some good young players in our system but the kind of player we really seem to be missing, and even down our pipeline is a Brent Seabrook type. Punishing d-men, not in it for the stats, not flashy, just a guy who does everything well and can cover any NHLer.

  9. Is he the best defensive defenseman on the team right now?

    Discuss.

Saying he's the best defensive defensman on this team isn't saying much, but i would say i would agree with that up until his recent struggles. Ever since the Ducks came to Buffalo, in which he was paired with Zadorov i believe, he never recovered and i don't think he has been very good since.

In the last two, he has looked much better but i know before the bombshell they were even discussing it on WGR that maybe its time to sit him?

  10.

There is a clear separation between Reinhart and others. If there wasn't, he wouldn't be the absolute consensus number one forward.

For sure. I don't think there is any other forward with as much potential as he does. Don't get me wrong, i do believe there is some real solid offensive forwards in this draft, and some who will rise the ranks in the coming months, but Reinhart has the offense, the passion to be great, and is a excellent leader. Fights for pucks. He is the total package.

  11. Can't wait to see where he is two weeks from now.

My guess is the pressbox, or the fourth line, getting 3 minutes.

I am not so sure. He is exactly the kind of player Nolan likes to have. Big body skilled forward. If Nolan can't turn Stafford into a reliable hockey player, then idk if anyone will. He did play well last night. I expect Nolan to invest a lot of time into Stafford. Will be interesting to see where he's at a few weeks from now, as you wondered yourself.

  12. How about Moulson-Man with beer bottle avatar? I know...it's not the same spelling. :)

You're a lot more creative then I am.

Resign moulson, Sign Ryan callahan as UFA during summer and you got yourself a nice 2nd line off Moulson - Hodgson - Callahan

Signing Callahan could be a hiccup into their plans of Conner McDavid.

That's the real prize right there.
