  1. My favorite football club takes the pitch tomorrow, in the city of Durban, South Africa. Manchester United first game of the preseason against Amazulu FC. 2pm kickoff on Fox Soccer Channel. Can't wait. It's a watered down (and youthful) squad United is taking with them on this tour, but still excited to see the Reds in action.

My footballing vacation is officially over with matches starting to begin!

  2. That's great that soccer is growing in Canada, but there are scores of countries all over the world where soccer is infinitely more popular that has never been close to hosting a world cup. And yes, the US did host a World Cup, but that was a similar travesty in my opinion.

The US world cup is still the most attended World Cup of all time. I don't think that record will break, until USA hosts is a second time.

  3. Today was by far the worst show he has had since he was pure defensive mode.

When i heard about this show, it was common sense that this was just a propaganda Sabres show, but todays show was brutal. Even this show needs to realize not every single caller and listener is a kool-aid drinking fan. For Sylvester to pour on Brad Boyes and support Lindy Ruff is ridiculous. I hated Boyes, and he was awful here but Ruff/Regier brought him here, and Ruff is far from a perfect head coach. Sylvester making Ruff sound like the greatest coach since slice bread earlier today was disgusting.

  4. Sorry if I offend anyone, but...

Roy - still dislike him and all of the ice time he gets. He is captain-give-away-at-an-important time. He cannot finish as he always falls. He tries to find something that is not there. Sure he has points...how many of those are important points???

Ennis - Roy/Connolly in training, for sure - let me try to dipsee-doodle and make something that isn't there. And, when I have a scoring chance, let me shoot RIGHT at the goalie. He does hustle, but his hustle is always negated by a dumb play.

Gerbe - first line winger....REALLY? Another captain giveaway with no finish. DUMB.

Pommers - EXTRA shooting practice - he shoots wide more than it snows in Buffalo. RIDICULOUS! Get some glasses, man.

Glad we won. Changes still need to be made...Sigh.

  5. Stafford questionable per GR

"It's a little sore now, I pretty much did the same thing, I got a combination of a few things, not just my shoulder. I'm going to go do some treatment and see how it is."

Stafford is out, Chris Butler is in. Butler could also play a little at forward.

    per Paul Hamilton.

  6. now we get to see firsthand what an effective PP unit looks like.

wow. oh Santa, can we get a PP unit like that for xmas? is it too early to ask?

Not for Christmas, but if the Sabres want to show the fanbase they are committed they will break the bank to sign Ehrhoff. Guy is the PPQB this team is desperate for.

  7. Truth couldn't have been said better then by the MSG crew... Ray says Vanek looks completly different now that he has confidence and that is true, he was the best player on the ice in the first period. Vanek's presence late in the period on that hectic play created 4 shots for Buffalo. Also, Roby said despite high number of shots, it's an easy night for Miller. I'll take quality over quantity any day of the week. They can shoot all they want, but Miller has yet to be truly tested. Great job by the defense.

Steve Montador was one of the better players vs. Washington, and he's outstanding again tonight. And, despite having some issues handling the puck, Morrisson is turning the corner is is looking much better. He's finally hitting guys, clearing the crease and doesn't look slow.

  8. Please no, I'll be at that one! (I think you are right though)

I don't know how much it will be an "egg" as much as it will be the Caps are very good and they will be pissed and seeking revenge.

lol yeah. That was the most ridic comment i've read in a long time, unless they lose like 8-1. Caps are the best team in the league, arguably have the best player in the league, are 9-1-0 at home this season and are coming off a loss to Buffalo just few days ago....

  9. Wow, that girl signing the anthem was terrified. You don't see that very often, but it's kind of cool to see. And did anyone catch what the fans were randomly yelling during the anthem? Seems like a pretty trashy move to me.

Yeah, i think they threw her off at one point. But, that could have been just nerves, i don't know.

  10. You're absolutely right. That's why it pisses me off that the Sabres insist on having Friday night as their typical home game nights. The NHL's big night is always on Saturday nights. Therefore, the Sabres seem to almost always have their home game on Friday and then travel or host a game the next night. Why can't they be like every other team and have their home games on say Mondays and Saturdays or really any other day than Friday or Sunday? They're putting themselves at a disadvantage before the season even begins by playing so many back to backs.

Saying all that, they of course don't play this Friday night.

I like Friday night games. But, anyone remember back in the Biron/Mika era, where crowds were very small and the Sabres did "Red Hot Fridays" and wore those Red jerseys? They had tons of discounts and a later start (8pm) and as a result the crowds were much bigger and very rowdy. Those were the days. Maybe thats why i like Friday nights so much, because i went to most back then at a discount rate and got absolutely wasted before heading out to Chippawa right after.

  11. NFW. Not even close. I can easily name 20 players I'd rather have on my team than Kovy. And if contracts are considered in the analysis, I can name 50.

    Other observations from Newark:

    1. Myers had his best game of the season. Welcome to the top pair, Reggie (who also had a pretty good game).

    2. The first goal Enroth gave up was debatable, but I thought he was pretty much blameless on the others and that he made a number of good saves.

    3. I thought Leopold had a pretty good game.

    4. Vanek again passing into traffic instead of shooting when he had the puck coming in on a 2-on-1. If it weren't for Kovy, Vanek might be the biggest bust and worst contract in the NHL.

    5. I think this is the last year for Grier and Niedermayer. Both played OK, but there are other guys out there who do what they do and add a bit more.

    6. Kaleta was very quiet -- no big hits or even any attempts. His line with Gaustad and McCormick had some good moments on the forecheck though.

    7. The arena was about half full, maybe 60%. My section was no more than half full.

    8. I apologize to our distaff members, but it must be reported: the Devils' dancing girls are pretty skanky and not terribly hot.

    9. Good win, and exciting, and I'm glad that they didn't wilt after falling behind -- but the Devils are a terrible team right now. Let's beat the Rangers tomorrow night and then we'll see if we have something to be a bit hopeful about.

Nice recap. I agree with most of it, especially the Kovy part. He is definitely NOT a top 10 player. He's a top 10 scorer. But thats all he is. He's quick and has quick hands. Does that make him a top 10 player? No. He doesn't back check, he doesn't battle by the boards, his passing is awful, his vision of the ice is terrible, he isn't clutch and when he doesn't score goals, he's worthless. That's why he's never almost never been in the playoffs and when he has, it's been a quick exit. And i don't even want to hear about the "bad" teams he's been on, because he's played with some solid players. For a top 10 talent to be with decent players, he should have more playoffs success.

  12. I'll tell you one thing, Roy has played like a champion this season, despite the team's record.

Is this the team's first winning streak?

Yes, but it won't last. Theres probably only three teams in the entire league that are worse then us, and we've played two of them the past 2 games. Going on short rest, it may be tough tomorrow, but NYR are not very good either although i think Gaborik is returning... but after that, back to our losing ways.

  13. I don't want to be the guy to crap in the nachos right now, but the passing on this team is atrocious. Not just the selection (sometimes there isn't even a guy there), but being able to even collect a pass. It really is terrible.

I think that has to be blamed on Lindy Ruff. He's always had problems with his offenses. He's always focused more on defense and now seems like when our players leave and we get replacements, they are always just worse. Not that i am going to beg on them for letting Clarke MacArthur go, but the way he's skating now in Toronto and last year in Atlanta, he never did here. He was more of a banger and seemed slow. But, turns out hes a really good open ice player. Still has problems with finishing, and that isn't Ruff's fault, but you get my point.

The offensive tactics that Ruff has up his sleeve, nobody buys into. Especially guys who have been under him for years or rentals....

And that, IMO, is why he must go.

  14. Boy did I pick the wrong year to split seasons. Not even center ice on the 100 level could ease the pain of this one. That was the worst sporting performance I have been to since the Bills Cleveland 6-3 game.

Connolly, Gaustad, Stafford, Rivet need to be let go for anything. If you can't trade them, just dump them. Regier better be on the phone with Calgary RIGHT NOW and I don't care if we get raked over the coals in a trade for Iginla. This team needs a Captain and if it involves players like Vanek and Ennis, so be it.

I may have wasted a lot of $$ on this crappy team but I really, TRULY feel so badly for the parents who dump hundreds of dollars to take their kids out on a limited budget and have the team show nothing in return. F you to the players for that...a big F U

Agreed. These guys are bums and i would go as far to say Patrick Kaleta isn't too far down on that list of getting let go, as long as they find another cheap replacement, someone similar to Cody McCormick. I think Drew Stafford would be the toughest to trade away, so i think it may just be easier to keep him around. Rivet and Connolly are UFA at the end of the year, so i would assume there would be interest in both of them from teams in the playoff hunt. And if Goose keeps his faceoff % up, he may gain interest too.

Second part, i don't agree with. I would love to get Jerome Iginla in here. I would offer young players like Enroth and Adam, also a 1st round pick, and current players like Connolly or Stafford to get him. But, i would send Vanek or Ennis. Iggy isn't get any younger. Vanek and Ennis have their entire careers still ahead of them.

  15. Nice opening line.

Now you lost me. As has been pointed out ad nauseam with Kovy, the parts (I've been told) are greater than the sum. Isn't the inverse true then? Couldn't this be a case where the sum is greater than the parts and therefor worth it to pay Hank? They are both obviously better together.

Then don't say the goal is to win the Cup.

I'm sure that as soon as anyone of value becomes available Darcy with jump right on him, because his track record truly shows this to be his MO. :wallbash:

This doesn't make much sense. Not all teams that spend to the cap can compete for the Cup. And not all teams that don't spend to the cap are terrible teams. And, the Sabres have had one of the higher payrolls in the league last few years, just not this year. This team needs a lot of help, no hiding from that, but that comment was garbage.
