  1. Ullmark is playing well, but he's too scrambly and floppy.    That's just part of being a young goaltender, he needs to be playing a ton and he can do that in Roch while he fine tunes his game.    It's just a matter of time before he lays an egg at the NHL level and you don't need to crush his confidence while he's young.

    Duh, sounds like Hasek.

  2. I just rewatched the game and Johnson was terrible.  If your goalie can't make the occasional difficult save, you won't win many games in this league.  With the exception of the end of last game (especially OT and the shootout), the guy has looked consistently shaky IMHO.  It's just been masked by not facing many shots against in prior games.

I'm looking forward to seeing Linus Ullmark in net next game.

He doesn't look shaky; he looks paralyzed.

  3. Idk if I said this in the Draft thread but I hope so.  Jack Eichel has this leadership swagger about him and this competiveness that I think Connor has but not as much of. Connor has been the greatest thing since slice bread for years. Jack has been highly touted but at each level he has had to work to prove how good he is.  I think Jack is mentally more mature and more of natural leader.

McDavid in the OHL playoffs showed that if you play him physically he gets frustrated and he reacts. Jack in the NCAA playoffs and at the World Championship showed more control IMPO.  He doesn't get overly flustered, Jack just get's more competitive.  Jack I think is desinged to thrive under pressure, he enjoys.  McDavid thus far seems to get annoyed by it.  Again we could be reading into things but I've always liked Jack's personality over Connor's

I agree but I think Jack was the player Edmonton needed.  I also think Jack is the player Buffalo needed but I think Connor McDavid fits better on a team with 2-way forwards like Zemgus and ROR than he does on team that has Nail Yakupov as a winger.  Part of Jack's success so far is that Buffalo has a more well rounded team.  Also Jack has an elite shot and Connor doesn't.

As to the premise of seizing control in EDM.  I think Jack Eichel is more likely to emerge as a leader who is a force than Connor McDavid.  Jack hates losing with a fiery passion, he hates it. I don't get that same level of hatred from Connor.

Again still very early and I expect Connor Mcdavid to be fine (lol) but I loved since the lottery that we were getting Jack and I still love him on this team.

When's the last time we had someone with an elite shot?  What a pleasure to test goalies for a change.  Stafford and Eichel were both number one picks by the Sabres.  Comparisons?

  4. Well, exciting offense. Defense and goaltending are big question marks.

    Huge question marks.

Let me come in late to comment on the goalkeeping. Lehner looks awful so far. Even in the shut out win, he was out of position a number of times and was lucky he wasn't scored on. It's not that he's slow. He looks lost setting up for plays. I see that kind of play in beer league hockey. I don't expect that in the NHL.

Obviously he can't be that bad. How does he get to this level if he is? He needs to get his head on straight and work on the fundamentals of position and reading the play. This is where we may regret losing Arturs Irbe.

Is he truly over the concussion?  If not, he shouldn't even be out there.  We need to be targeting a decent second liner in case things don't improve early on.

  5. I like this. Guy puts up great AHL numbers. Didn't play much in the NHL last season - coach didn't like him apparently. Maybe he was their CoHo

I'd rather have a defensman who can play defense rather than put up big numbers, unless his name is Orr, Pronger, and a few others.

  6. I did. I was frustrated with his play at the end and I think he *wanted* to do better, but the whole team was a ###### storm the last couple years. He came up with the last of the core that was just purged; he clearly wasn't part of the team's future direction but I expect he'll be fine in Calgary. He came into a good team and might have been part of a strong future, but then Drury and Briere exited and the team got progressively worse each year. Yes, part of that is on Drew for sure, but it must have been hard playing on a team that was swirling down the toilet. Yeah, he wasn't part of the solution, but I still think he's a good player. Let's see how he does in WPG.

What was there to like about Stafford?  Perhaps it was his "grit," lackadaisacal attitude, "hustle;" should I go on?  What drove me crazy is that Lindy continually used him in shootouts.  He appeared clueless, lazily floated in toward the net, made no moves on the goalie, and got off a weak shot that never went in.  When the Sabres drafted him, it was said he was a tough two-way player.  I'm from Missouri on that one.  Perhaps money soothed his dynamic soul.

  7. Here is what I believe Murray will do.

He has identified a player or two that he likes and he will trade for him(them) near the draft. The problem is that the league GM's now know that he will severely overpay to get the player he wants (based on the over payments he made with trades previously i.e. LA ans WPG)

For instance, lets say he likes Ryan O'Reilly from Colorado. He will give up two players, two top prospects or top draft choices to get him. He will pay too much. I believe this is a mistake, but his track record says he will do it.

When Murray talked about the Winnipeg trade he said he had to give up a top pick Myers to get two top picks in return (Kane,Bogosian). I saw him give up much more than that, but he sees things through weird glasses.

Overpaying is in the eye of the beholder.  If you have a critical need and obtaining it will give you a signifiant boost, overpaying to satisfy that need may be your only option.  But it can pay off in spades and no one will complain that you pulled the trigger so long as it works.
