  1. One division title doesn't mean that everything is headed in the right direction.

You're right, it doesn't. That roster was temporary for one season. But it doesn't prove that signing veteran UFA's sends the wrong message. If anything Tallon wasn't even planning on making the playoffs so as it turns out, signing a bunch of low to mid $$ UFA's can turn out better than planned.

  2. And were a pube's length away from beating the EC champs in the first round.

Sorry, misread your post the first time. Yeah, that OT game was tough to stomach.

Remember who won a division in Tyler Myers' rookie year?

I edited my post because I totally misread his.

Yes I do, what does that have to do with sending a wrong message by signing a bunch of veteran UFA's?

  3. So here we have a dedicated player who is a hard working blue collar kind of guy, since he's had to prove himself through every step of his career. A player that gets in front of the net and gets most of his goals in close. A consistent 30+ goal scorer (who hasn't been with Tavares for all of those 30+ goal years) and could be had for a reasonably low price. Not to mention all the talk about hitting the cap floor if/when Stafford and Miller are eliminated from this roster, on top of the fact we got a 1st and 2nd round to boot.

Isn't he exactly the kind of player Sabres fans have been dying for for years? Am I missing something? I just don't get it.

  4. Also true, I do not deny this fact. I question it's merit however, given the youth on the team, would management really want to bring in players that are here merely for a pay check? Is it just me, or do others believe that is a bad example to be giving the youth of the team, especially when they see this and their 3rd contract comes up, or 2nd, depending on the talent level? I see all kinds of bad things happening if the team went that route contract wise.

    See above.

Panthers got a division title out of it.

  5. One thing I'd like to say though.. we're really quick to kill Darcy but he BETTER get his props in 5-10 years when our forwards consist of some combination of Hodgson, Foligno, Ennis, Grigorenko, Girgensons, Larsson, Flynn, Armia, Catenacci, Bailey, Compher, Hurley, Baptiste and our defense has Pysyk, Ehrhoff, McCabe, Risto, Nikita, Myers, McNabb

This is before we throw in the ridiculous amount of prospects we're getting the next 2 years and whoever of these guys we trade to bring in pieces that fit the mold of our team during this time, we got a lot to be excited about just not* right now.

Lots of talent to use as trade bait for some quality veterans to fill any holes as well.

  6. Compare 2002 to 2003. It's fairly astonishing.

My question about this year's draft being "weak", is it:

    a. Just plain weak throughout.

    b. Weak compared to last year (which was a very strong draft)

    c. Weak compared to next year

    d. Just weak at the top (Reinhart not as strong as MacKinnon or McDavid) and normal the rest of the way.

    e. Weak after the top five or ten.

All good questions. Ones that I'm not qualified to answer.

  7. A GM rebuilding the team he built. The whole notion is just so very interesting - like a home builder building a ###### house, and then declaring it's no good - and that he has gotta tear it down and start again. LOL And outside observers would expect the second home made by the same builder to be better than the first?

    1. His first rebuild was nowhere near this scale.

    2. His first rebuild was on a leash. I would expect another home to be much better quality when the builder is allowed to do as he pleases to make it right no matter the cost.

But, we've been over this several times.

  8. Well it's not like it's the kids' first year playing hockey. The people who scout them for a living have an eye for talent, I'm sure most teams already have early projections for the next two or even three years of draft eligible players. At this time last year we were all well aware of MacKinnon, Drouin, Jones... Barkov became a mainstream name shortly after. Didn't take long for Nichushkin, Monahan, etc to enter the mix. The only household name people know this year is Reinhart and I'm guessing anyone who isn't as hardcore a hockey fan as most of us are wouldn't even know that.

I don't watch any junior leagues so I have limited knowledge on up and coming prospects, but I think it's safe to say this year's draft doesn't really compare with last years.

I'd like to see how draft classes actually panned out over the years in comparison to what was projected.

I don't think many 1st rounds are going to vary greatly, especially when you're loaded with picks. Pittsburgh was a fluke.

  9. What in the world did people want for Vanek? No way were they going to get blue chip prospects with a posible MN team in play. If they would have waited until the deadline they would have gotten less, MUCH less.

Put the hatred for Darcy aside for a moment and be glad this happened when it did.

Good post. I'm devastated to see Vanek go. But considering the circumstances I think he made out well. Even better if they keep Moulson OR manage a 1st+ at the deadline.

  10. Miller needs to be moved NOW. It's obvious now that Darcy is in full rebuild mode. If all the new kids are getting their chance to play, Enroth should be given starting time moving forward. With Miller around, they're obligated to play him.

I posted 2 or 3 above - and there were a couple others - but what's the point? There's no accountability for Regier within the Sabres - Pegula is just a fan-boy. I think the press just needs to keep hammering on him and the management, and keep the pressure on - highlight empty seats, dissatisfied fans, listless play by veterans, etc etc etc.

  11. So glad this is now done. That whole MN thing was scaring me. Vanek lost all interest in this team and the youth has been carrying any good play so far this season. Get Miller on the next train outta here and call it a day. I can finally breathe now that the TRUE rebuild is now underway. Get a power forward for Miller, draft top center and off we go.

    Florida needs a goaltender NOW!

  12. No he wasn't. Wingels ducked at the last second. I hate Chara more than most, but this isn't a suspension.

Wingel did not have possession of the puck (much more time between the pass and the hit than Scott's hit) and Chara's arms were clearly at head level. Let's not even mention the countless times throughout his career that he has gotten away with illegal hits.

We're just going to have to agree to disagree.

  13. Chara hit wasn't a suspendable hit. Should've been a penalty because it was way late, though.

He was aiming for the head.

He'll never hold him himself accountable. Not in a million years.

I wonder if they interviewed Lucic after the game about illegal hits.
