  1. Yea! Damn those 0-18yr olds and those 67- death year olds for not paying income tax. Freeloaders... btw, that makes up something like 37% (27%? Either or) of that 48.7% of ppl not paying taxes.

Households not straight percentage of population! And guess which population has the greatest household size? You're not understanding the math here. As a percentage of population it's probably much higher than 50% but for some reason there aren't a lot of hard numbers available for this kind of data. See what I did there, wildcard?

  2. Korab, I unintentionally misrepresented. I say "after taxes" turns out, I mean "after taxes, insurance, social security, Medicare?, 401k."

Anywhooo, not a lot left to pay rent, stay warm and buy food. Would have been nice to have that few grand back instead of the couple hundred I did get back.

Wish I was responsible enough with my money to not ever buy bills tickets with it. That was a waste, every time. Can't remember ever being happy when leaving orchard park after a game. Nope, not once! Always sidestepping vomit and jumping over streams of piss and getting my balls broken by fans of whatever team just curb stomped Buffalo. ###### the bills!

I hear you.  You would have been better off knocking up a couple hoes so you could claim the kids as dependents while the state supported them.

Sports tickets are never a good investment.  You'd be better off taking that money and betting against the Bills.  That way, when the bills lose, you are happy!

Jesus - if someone had actually done that, what would the return be over the last 17 years?  I'm not much of a betting guy so I never pay attention to spreads.  See what I did there, Wildcard?

  3. To echo NS, a flat tax or a tax on consumable goods (i.e. sales tax) is naturally a regressive tax as it taxes a higher percentage of the poor's income than the wealthy.

A poor person makes 20k a year, but still has to buy the same groceries, clothes etc. to live and is taxed on those purchases.

The wealthy person makes 100k a year, and when they buy the same groceries and clothes, it is a significantly smaller portion of their income.

Also, I worry that you are mis-representing the below quote since taxes are taken out of every paycheck, and hence paid throughout the year. Claiming 0 taxes or getting a rebate come April does not mean you haven't paid taxes.

I know that sales tax on its own is regressive.. but sales tax is a small piece of the tax pie.  As a whole our tax SYSTEM is progressive.

As to some people paying taxes - THEY GET IT ALL BACK!   If taxes are withheld, but you get them all back at the end of he year, you haven't paid taxes.  Some people get more back than they paid in!  And in the mean time, their mother or father or cousin may be getting paid by the tax payers to watch their kid, and they don't pay any taxes either.  Unless you have been in the belly of the beast and seen the abuse in this system its hard to understand what is happening.

  4. +++++

No offence korab, but I don't think that you fully understand the term 'regressive tax'.  Any sales tax anywhere, including NYS, is, by it's very nature, regressive.  The exact opposite of progressive.

My apologies if this sound snarky, or big-headed, or something ... not my intention.

I know what regressive taxes are.  In a system where 50% of the population pays no income tax and the remaining 50% pays a progressively steep income tax, but everyone has to pay a small amount of sales tax on what they purchase with what they have left, the system is not regressive. sales tax is regressive, but our tax system is not.

  5. If you're talking about the Forbes survey, let's not even bother.  It is fatally flawed.  It valued the Bills at about 800M two months after someone purchased it for 1.4B.

Obviously, if someone is willing to pay 1.4B for it, it is worth at least 1.4B.

are football teams depreciating assets?  That's an aggressive schedule!

  6. Hi! Guy who doesn't know how taxes work, here. I remember being poor. Like, wicked poor. $4.75/hour and taxing my tips poor. Clearing $17k after taxes when I grossed almost $25k, poor. Who are these people that don't have to pay taxes? Honest question, I'm not being smug or snarky.

Family of 4, not a single person was the premise.  However, not sure what year it was that you were making that amount, but the federal tax rate has been 15% on income of 25K since 1998.  Couldn't find a historical NY income tax table, but your NYS taxes would be roughly 6.5% on your AGI, so, I don't know how you could have possibly paid 32% in taxes.

As for a family of four, by the time you take out standarized deductions and earned income tax credits and child and dependent care credits you end up paying no taxes.  In 2011, the perctage of households paying no federal income tax was 46.4%

It was a Fake News argument, just like our corporations pay the highest taxes.

Fake news!  everyone's favorite response to an argument they don't agree with.  You may not recall that during 2011, it was determined that 46.4% of US households pay no federal income tax.  Not much data after that - I guess the Obama admin didn't want those numbers published as they push for their goal of a majority of the country contributing nothing but legislating how much those who do pay have to pay.

    I'd rather lose the team.

    Well, this explains a lot.

Trust me, it is terrible for the people in that situation. Much more than for you.

Again, cry me a river.  With all the handouts and hand ups and free tuition, free child care, free housing it is easier than ever to reverse your fortunes if that's what you decide you want to do.  As the first college graduate in my family despite being in this country for 250 years, I am living proof.

Keep your dick in your pants, your hands in your pockets, a needle out of your arm, and set your goals higher than the newest pair of sneakers on the market.

Awesome, tax breaks. In other words, the taxpayers (read: people that don't make enough to get sweetheart deals on taxes) pay in the end since the county budget needs money from somewhere. Do the math: Even if Erie County "only" puts in $100M, that's $50 (ish) for every man, woman, and child in Erie County. Do you honestly believe every single person in the county is going to see $50 of new income and/or enjoyment out of the deal to offset their increased taxes?

The land it would be built on is a brownfield at present generating no tax revenue.  It isn't taking anything out.  What value do you place on quality of life?

    Correct.

Absolutely.  I really hit this point hard when I teach a tax course.

regressive taxes?  you would have to be really bad at math to believe that exists in the states, and especially the great state of NY

As if our progressive federal tax rate wasn't enough - here's what NY does with what is left after the feds takes their portion.

    For single taxpayers:

    • 4% on the first $8,400 of taxable income.
    • 4.5% on taxable income between $8,401 and $11,600.
    • 5.25% on taxable income between $11,601 and $13,750.
    • 5.9% on taxable income between $13,751 and $21,150.
    • 6.45% on taxable income between $21,151 and $79,600.
    • 6.65% on taxable income between $79,601 and $212,500.
    • 6.85% on taxable income between $212,501 and $1,062,650.
    • 8.82% on taxable income of more than $1,062,651.

Here's a table showing how NYS's tax burden is shared (or more accurately isn't shared)

Table 1.1: NYS Personal Income Taxes, 2010 Percent of Total

    Income                      Tax Liability                Tax Returns

    $0-$50,000                4.6%                           61.0%

    50,000-100,000         23.3                            26.4

    100,000-200,000       18.6                            9.7

    200,000-1,000,000    20.2                            2.6

    1,000,000 & above    33.3                            0.4

    Excelsior!

  7. First, see below. There are more taxes than just income tax. That makes your argument Bullspit. What if erie county raises sales tax 2% for 10-15 years to pay for the super palace? To bad little johnny, we would have but you that school book you needed but we had to spend an extra 2% on everything we bought this year so sports could happen. Don't worry though, there will be some mythical economic impact down the line... someday.

Second. There are what 8 home games a year and maybe 8 concerts/other things that will be held at the stadium.  Most other things will be at Key Bank because Buffalo isn't large enough to need a football venue that often. So right now you are telling me that the 16 events a year are going to bring enough money to Buffalo to make it worth charging Erie County residents upwards of 500k for said stadium. Hell no. You know what 500k could be used for, feeding the homeless, housing the homeless, taking care of WNY veterans, making sure children have a free school lunch... or we can watch millionaires hit eachother while Billionaires sit in air conditioned suites bragging about how swanky the stadium they used taxpayer money for them feel. No thanks.

Third. The NFL made 13Billion last year. Pegula is worth at least 4 Billion. You're telling me the NFL and Terry Pegula can't say hey the Ralph is really old, let's take 200,000 from the NFL profits and Pegula puts in 200K from his account each year for 3 years and then Bam. You just pay for it yourself. It is an absolute joke when Billionaires come begging for money for football stadiums. At least hockey arena's get more use.

Erie county residents wont pay ######.  Most of it will come from the state.  a Lot of the county's contribution will be tax breaks.  Cry me a river on sales tax - must be terrible to ONLY have to pay sales tax, and not get enjoy watching the state and feds take nearly half of every dollar you make, and then having to pay sales tax on everything you buy with what's left.  If it wasnt for sales tax more than half the country would quite literally contribute nothing to our lovely government.  Erie county cant raise the sales tax any higher because the crooked and ineffectual leaders that Erie County keeps electing can never manage with what they have.

If you have a domed stadium you can do a lot more events throughout the year that wont fit in a hockey arena.  The Ralph has nothing around it at all - no place to stay, no place to eat, no nothing.  Put a domed stadium downtown in an area already surrounded by hotels and bars and restaurants and the possibilities are endless.

  8. Isn't there 8% sales tax in Erie county? They pay plenty of tax.

I meant income tax.  Erie County is all the way up to 8.75%!  4.75% of that goes to the County.

Plenty?  When I think how they tax me, tax me on what's left, tax me on what I manage to save, tax me on what I own, and tax me all over again on anything I have left after I die, paying 8.75% sales tax is meaningless.

  9. If Pegula wants the taxpayers of Erie County to pay for his new Stadium, oh man am I going to turn on him so fast. You are worth 4billion and the NFL made what? 13Billion last year. Build your own damn palace with your own GD money and leave the average family of 4 with their 40k alone.

It isn't well intended debt. There are countless studies that show taxpayer funded mega arenas literally never make the county money/taxpayer money back. How many fans from outside the WNY area come to Bills games? maybe what 5-10% of the total crowd. Most people going to the game already pay taxes and spend their money inside the county. Building taxpayer funded mega stadiums is a pyramid scheme.

Your first paragraph above is bullspit.  The average family of 4 making 40K pays no taxes at all.

The second paragraph fails to take into account the broader benefits of a stadium, especially the downtown stadium that will serve as a further lynchpin for pegulaville-on-the-lake and make it easier to attract quality businesses and for those quality businesses to stay open.  A domed stadium in the heart of an area we are desperately trying to reinvigorate that can be used 365 days a year is infinitely better than an open air stadium in the middle of nowhere which is uninhabitable most of the year and currently only used 10 times a year and for a couple of concerts.

  10. Paul Hamilton over Dan Dunleavy?

As much as I still loathe Hamilton for his shoddy Reinhart article, his play by play is pretty solid.

Are you kidding? Hamilton is a giant douche of the strawberry fields order. Honestly, he is the most annoying media member in buffalo. The guy is so pompous and full of himself. His references to his club hockey days in the Midwest 30 years ago as if that gives him some kind of hockey cred are gag- inducing. I can't stand his smug fat voice and face.

  11. I can't understand how Dunleavy has a job. The guy is brutal. Worst hockey play by play announcing I've ever heard!!!!

You should listen to more local broadcasts around the league. He's a star compared to some of these places. You don't call games on HNIC because you suck. Calling a game on the radio is much different than TV. RJ is possibly the best at it ever. Anyone and everyone else will pale in comparison.

  12. I think if he plays anything like he did last season, he easily gets $7M

I agree with this.  Very few players in the league who score 25+ goals a year are as hard to play against as Kane.  He is the kind of guy you want in a playoff series.  His speed and aggression will give the other team's D fits.  When the Sabres make the playoffs, I want a player like him on the team.  I would do 6x6 years.  Assuming he is playing well and no problems, sign him to that contract before the trade deadline.  If not, move him.  Cant let a player like him walk for nothing

  13. See korab (loved that guy by the way) I don't think we are "ready to contend now" and without more changes we are only marginally better than last year.

Duchene I would trade for, and yes I know all his potential pitfalls and that argument can be found in the Duchene thread but I think he'd be a better fit than Reinhart. It wouldn't be a 1 for 1 but Avs want a young potential in the deal make that trade around Sam.

I don't know who we get for Kane, don't know who would want him. I would have maybe said Flyers but Hextall's been pretty shrewd now and seems to be looking to his kids so maybe a guy like Kane is no longer on their radar. Still, if they've given up on Goethstisbeher (or whatever you spell it as) I'd look at him as a potential guy Housley could develop into a superstar. No idea who is available though, I don't really follow the rosters of other teams much.

Who wants Kane that'd be the first question?

If you want to trade for duchene with Reinhart as the center piece you are going to have to add a first and Guhle.  You are giving up a cost controlled reinhart who is at worse 5/6 of duchene, for a player about with two years left at a much higher price than reinhart.

The flyers just signed Gostisbehere to a 6 year 27 million contract.  I doubt they are looking to move him, but anything is possible.

Who knows what Kane's value is on the trade market. If you think you are going to get back a 28 goal scorer for either Kane or Reinhart, well, you really ought to study past trades across the league.  It will require gutting our prospects taking back a major albatross of a contract, or both.

  14. Which guys do you propose to trade them for? Who are we going to get back who is going to score 25 goals?

Which kids are we going to put in these slots who is ready to play top 6 minutes now? Trading Kane and reinhart now would gut our offense. The team is ready to contend for a playoff spot now. Trade them now and we set back our development at least a year.

  15. My point isn't that Kane is terrible, but for the long term growth of this team I think we'd be better off to trade him now while his value might be high (and I'd say over valued) due to a solid season last year. It's not like you get nothing in return, I just think you get a lot more now then you'll get if he's in the last year of his contract or if he is injured this year or has any drop off or any issues in any way similar to his past issues. In a risk reward scenario, I think the smart move is to unload him now and get a solid return.

So you want to trade Reinhart and Kane. Who exactly is going to fill those slots this year? We aren't getting players back who are as good as them right now, and we don't have any prospects ready to step in.
