  1. I don't know, GCOE .... Two 85 point years and #12 picks look relatively attractive in hindsight. Two years of "historically bad" and " not since the 1946/47 season" articles yielding 9 game tryouts has been tough. At least I could've watched knowing that "tonight means something".

  2. We all knew that game was a loss, anything other than that would have been a pleasant surprise. We still have the same amount of games left, the worse team, a hard schedule, and we're leading the league. It may not be as nice as it was a week ago, but we're not in a bad position by any stretch.

I don't think we have the worst team NOR the harder schedule. (Lol, NHL speak, again)
  3. I get it, 3Putt. I'm a fan. I'll buy into either plan - best possible OR DFL. It's the execution that's driving me batty. Which failed strategy was it? We kept a coah and made no moves during a 14 game losing streak NHL!). We dumped roster players for picks and an injured reserve guy. After game ten, this season was all about DFL or major moves to get better fast. No moves were made. I'm certain an historic run to 29 was never articulated. Who didn't execute?

Brb, self medicating. I had GMTM on a pedestal. I now have him on the watch list.

  4. Good Lord, the pessimism around here is truly palpable. On paper, the Sabres shouldn't have a chance of picking any points up tonight. They're w/in striking distance of 1-2. IF they get a point or 2, it's gravy. If not, take care of business in 4 of 5 and it doesn't matter what the DD's do.

That's the point - they're not taking care of business anywhere near as well as Arizona is. Assuming a (NHL) win here, who'd you rather be, in light of current level of play and schedule, Ari or Buf?

  5. You don't come this far and lay up. You don't send this community home with blue balls. I haven't been pro-tank from the beginning, but I bought into it. My rationale was that if this cluster mess produced anything other than 1 / 1a, two years were wasted. We could've gone all in, retained players, and still drafted some quality kids. You go for back to back DFLs, you'd better not screw it up.

My questions for Mr. Pegula: Was DFL the plan, or was best product possible the plan? Who screwed it up? Tell me the plan wasn't something in between best possible and DFL.

  6. Same thing for the Coyotes:

    ARI vs:

    SJ 1-3-0

    SJ at SJ 1-1-0

    SJ at ARI 0-2-0

    CGY 3-2-0

    CGY at CGY 0-2-0

    VAN 3-2-0

    VAN at VAN 0-2-0

    ANA 0-5-0

    ANA at ARI 0-2-0

Projects to ARI picking up maybe one point.

If the season series with the remaining opponents are any indication, it's gonna be close.  Real close.

This (along with your prior post) is exactly how I saw it a few days back, and still do.  You have the Yotes at 1 more.   This, plus the Detroit win "gives" them 3 or less.   I had the Sabres at 6 or more.  Both totals exclude the head to head, just completed.   We needed two regulation losses to have any margin.   I saw some great analyses that took the season's winning percentages, points per game, etc., into account.   I don't think each team's season long trajectory overcomes the short term strength of schedule difference.   TBPhD pointed out the tie breaker to me.   That was good news.   If not for that, my money would be on the Yotes.   With that, it's pick 'em to me.

PS ... I understand the sporstclub stats page has strength of schedule worked in to it.   Their 89% is comforting, although my eyeballs don't see where it's coming from.

  7. It might be partly because of the dictum he's working under: teach and change the culture. So, the lines stay the same because everyone on the roster has to learn to compete.

Also, Teddy is big on earning playing time, and that lesson seems to be more important to him this season rather than flat out trying to gain points. He has to remain consistent for the lesson to be effective.

Indeed, it would seem that a lot of the coaching blunders this year could be explained that way. Perhaps he was told, at the beginning of the season, not to concern himself with points so much as to drill irrevocably the lessons of earning time, trying harder, and playing for your teammate. Maybe GMTM told him the results of those lessons are the prime factors in his evaluation.

That's all I can think of that's not "Nolan can't coach at the NHL level".

A rational explanation. Great post, true or not, for those of us who aren't sure.

  8. Top 10 Sabres memorable moments from a veteran (old) fan:  in no particular order.

1 Soviet Red Army Butt Kick -- WINGS!

2 "Thank You Sabres" Game -- I attended, SRO.

3 Fog Stanley Cup Game -- radio.

4 No Goal -- alone in my den, after midnight, in Tampa.

5 Shoenfeld/Cashman Zamboni door fight -- radio, Blasdell.

6 Brad Fricken Park -- 88 Highgate, UB.

7 Malarchuk almost dying -- read about it. NJ, Rutgers.

8 Hannan OT winner -- there, about five rows behind SHK. (Hasek, 70 saves. I talked to Stephan Richey a decade later - "unreal. We were never going to score")

9 Pominville OT winner -- TV, TAMPA -- my kids now sharing memories with me)

10 Gretzky goal record/Perreault Hat trick[ -- was there- I believe he tied and set the recorde against Sauve and Edwards, respectively)/quote]

    Awesome list!

  9. I am. I remember watching, on television, with my grandmother! Korab sneered all night. He pounded Yakushev, over and over. I remember the Red Army - Flyers game, too. Confused Soviets and a furious coaching staff.

  10. What about a lottery, but only for the bottom three teams? 1/3, 1/3, 1/3? You'd have little reason to tank "every point, all season long" and no reason at all among the really bad. I guess you could have the 4 and 5 teams trying to tank to 3, but I don't see that as a season long commitment for a 33% shot. Just thinkin' out loud ....

I believe that putting everyone in the lottery was designed to create a television event and not to maintain competitive balance. It made "securing 30" critical. Did it magnify tanking?

  11. ugh, this formatted better in the box!

    Team, Points and Player

    Years Pit Pit Buf

    Before Lemieux Crosby McEichle

    5 73 96 96

    4 73 69 89

    3 75 65 84 **

    2 45 58 52

    1 38 0* 54 ***

    * Lottery after lockout cancelled Season -- Historical note: Sabres had same chance as Pit.

    ** Lockout shortened; projected.

    *** Guestimate.
