Not really. As long as the two teams playing aren't involved you can do whatever you want. The window before free agency is short so some teams want to get things done (or not) so they can go into free agency (and the draft) with clear plan A's or plan B's.
I suspect teams in the finals *could* make a trade, but the incoming player wouldn't be eligible to play so there's zero benefit. Interesting question though: if you play a game in the finals or enough during the season, but get traded before the end of the series, do you still get your name on the cup?

Think so, early on. I remember there being a "New Pink" to, but have no idea where that was.

I don't think I was ever in there. I didn't drink much when I lived in Buffalo, that start after I moved away. MsPie used to sneak in the kitchen door when she was in high school, lol.

I don’t think players would automatically gravitate towards good (ie playoff) teams. Players want to play, so they’ll likely go to teams that have potential spots open. That said, sometimes players have the wrong priorities and pick solely based on city. In the end, it should be a mix of factors: multiple spots open, stability of FO/coaching, make-up of the rest of team (they don’t want to go to a complete bottom dweller), and locale.
Weird that you get to decide which priorities are "wrong".

No data. Thus the "(d)idn't watch it or even know about it before it happened, but THAT is innovative" part of the post. 😉
Also, though am just outside Ra-cha-cha, which is still kind of a hub for the deaf community, had not known what the differences are between ASL and say the "Rochester Method" or other sign languages. (Knew Ra-cha-cha had its own thing going for a time. Never really learned much about it (still haven't). (Add one more item to the seemingly endless "to-do someday" list.))
Interesting, I didn't know about Rochester Method! I knew there were different ways to sign but regional differences are fascinating.
EDIT: Oh, interesting: Rochester method is finger-spelling the English in full, as opposed to words having unique signs.

Be innovative, but intelligent about the way they do so. (This isn't directed at the Sabres but the league as a whole.) Heck, they actually DID do something innovative on Saturday. They broadcast the game with an ASL interpreter doing the play by play on one of the alternate ESPN channels. Didn't watch it or even know about it before it happened, but THAT is innovative. No idea if they did anything to highlight where the puck was as watching the announcer would necessarily distract from following the play on ice (tough to watch 2 things closely at once). But for once, the league was thinking outside the box. (It was likely ESPN's idea and not the league's so they could test it out on a sport that gets lower ratings and work out the bugs there before implementing it in NFL coverage.)
I wonder what the ASL signs though. It can't be the names (other than maybe goals) because of how long they take to spell out, so are they just describing the action that you can already see? Or telling stories about the players? 🙂

Craig Patrick. From the Patrick family (essentially NHL royalty, his grand dad was Lester Patrick (yes, THAT Lester Patrick) and his father was Lynn Patrick). Played in the NHL for a long time, was one of the few GOOD (not great, but good) California Golden Seals that didn't get immediately poached like some of the others such as Reggie Leach. Had a long career but always seemed to end up on bad teams. (Even though he was a Patrick, he also was an American, might've had something to do with the good teams staying away.)
Was the Assistant Coach to Herb Brooks on THAT Olympic Team.
GM of the Pens when they won back to back Stanley Cups.
Was an advisor to the Sabres soon after Pegula bought them.
Duh, thanks. I was brain farting on that one. I'm now thinking that Craig Patrick is the root of the Pens-affinity in the Sabres' hiring. I vaguely remember talk of "pulling people from the Pens because they're successful" early in Pegula's ownership.

There certainly was a “know this guy already” vibe with Ruff and some of the others you cite.
But there is none whatsoever that I’m aware of with the topic of this thread, Leone, or his predecessor Appert.
I don’t know that the Sabres hire “guys they know” more than other teams. The team I follow the next most closely, Vancouver, is stuffed full of Jim Rutherford connections.
Rutherford has earned more of a benefit of the doubt.
You're right, it might all be connections in other orgs.
Leone and Appert are both former USNTDP coaches, so "guys we've worked with".

What are the parameters to the pattern? The Sabres under Pegula?
- Ruff is about as opposite to the pattern as you can get.
- Granato fits the pattern
- Krueger does not fit the pattern
- Bylsma does not fit the pattern
- Nolan does not fit the pattern
- Adams fits the pattern
- Botterill fits the pattern
- Murray fits the pattern
- Karmanos does not fit the pattern
- Sexton does not fit the pattern
- Patrick does not fit the pattern
- Ventura does not fit the pattern
- Leone fits the pattern
- Appert fits the pattern
- Bales does not fit the pattern
- Wilford does not fit the pattern
- Ellis fits the pattern…
Is this actually a pattern?
Ruff literally worked for Pegula as NHL head coach before, he's the ultimate "we know this guy already". 🙂 Nolan was also a Sabres guy, although that's a bit more tenuous.
Karmanos, Sexton, Ventura, and Bylsma: Pegula, IIRC, has some Pens connections (his empire is largely based in Western PA). Can I amend the pattern to include people that worked for the Pens? There's a strong current of raiding the Pens' org for people, which like the USNTLP is "someone we know".
(I didn't check on Patrick because I don't know who that is, lol. unless we're talking James Patrick)

I don’t get the sudden hate. I guess they are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. They reached out to a guy from outside the organization and it’s still panned. This guy may very well be a great hire.
"Outside the org" would imply a fresh voice, but this seems like "I worked with this guy before in the USNTLPNCBWBBBQ". It may be a great hiring, but *everything* the Sabres do seems to be "we know this person" or "this person already works for us". That's fine if you're running a successful organization. The Sabres aren't so "more of the same" is met with reasonable concern.

Between the four teams starting the third round, this is the finals the NHL can't have wanted, lol.

Going on a Viking River cruise up the Rhine river in August. The only flight to Prague available in premium economy (need the leg room) on our departure day requires us to fly from Syracuse to Chicago, layover for 3 hours, then fly back east to Prague. So basically a waste of a day to get past where we start from. No comparable flights out of any eastern cities. 😩
I did that trip to London once; PHL to ORL, ORL to LHR. That was before I saw there's a direct flight from PHL to Gatwick, which has better train connections anyway.
2 hours ago, French Collection said:Did you look at Toronto? There were daily flights to Frankfurt and Prague when I went.
I think my parents recent did it that way, since it was easier. I suspect they took the same cruise, and loved it.

Bills OC gonna be known as Joe Valjean Brady. Here’s hoping we fans don’t end up miserables.
“At the end of the day, when you played the Buffalo Bills for however many years, you had to worry about Stefon Diggs, right? And that is different now. But you also had to worry about Josh Allen,” Brady said. “It’s a quarterback-driven league, and at the end of the day, we’re fortunate that we still have him, and the offense will still run through him. We’ll have to adjust, and we’ll have to get a feel of how teams are playing us. We’re a few days in but we’re excited about the group that we have.”
He missed a lay-up there with "We’re a few days in but we’re excited about the group that we have when tomorrow comes"

Oh man, I was at that game. Upper deck, at the Canes blueline camera-side when that goal went it. It was a mad house. That game (and the rest of the series) was the origin of the baby-eating, and "Drunkard" getting into the Canes fans' heads.

But that only took a week! It’s barely enough time to reach double digits in people talked to!
It’s almost like Treliving knew who he wanted to hire before he fired Keefe and he didn’t even do a thorough search.
😜
To be fair, every head coach (under contract or not) probably called hoping to work for the Leafs, so there wasn't much legwork on Treliving's part.

Yeah, I’d guess if either had been coaches longer than a year in Rochester they’d have a good shot at the job but 1 year on the job doesn’t exactly make you a great candidate
Dunnno, Appert had one year as USNTDP HC, and 10 as a college head coach when he got the Amerks job.

Landscaping people/companies.
We live in a community where a landscaping crew comes in and cuts the lawns and trims. When they trim they often scalp so low they kill the grass, and when they cut the lawn they drive so fast that when they make a turn, they dig the grass right out of the lawn and leave marks or entire bare spots.
The good news is our community isn't that strict, a few of us have 'opted out' of the service, and we cut my own lawns now. (we have close to 1/2 an acre, so not enough for a riding mower but by hand it takes close to an hour..but I have time, I don't mind it). The Landscaping company is also fine with it, they said simply submit a list of homes for them not to touch and they will abide by it.
My complaint is this:
-I submitted officially to the community to have me taken off the list of lawns to be cut and it was confirmed.
-When they started cutting the lawns a few weeks ago the guy who owns/runs the company showed up and I reminded him.
-When the workers that trim came by, they saw me and asked if I was getting the lawn cut, and I told them, no, our house is on the list to be skipped.
-I cut the lawn 2 days ago so it is OBVIOUS our lawn is shorter than both of our neighbors already.
Yet 20 minutes after confirming to that guy on site AGAIN that we are to be skipped...., the guy on the mower is not only driving through the backyard cutting it, but there is another guy trimming and making a mess of everything he touches.
It should not be this hard to get a company and its employees to actually do the most basic, simple things in their job.
Maybe a sign? "Get off my lawn!"
Complaint: minor fall on my MTB on Tuesday, but good enough to bruise my knee, hip, and elbow. Luckily, I did it right before a stop so everyone in the group was watching.

FWIW, I work for a large company. There are at least 50 employees with "Colton" as a first name. Based on scanning the profile pictures, they're not all NHL-player aged. Does seem like a lot of them work in southern states, so it might not be as common in the Northern states.
