  1. You're welcome.  Watching the SNL performances and other past live shows on Youtube, you get to see the more animated and greater vocal range version of Gord than what we saw on Saturday night, which obviously should be no surprise given his health.  It was an amazing gift from a dying man to allow for all his millions of fans this final tour goodbye.

What Gord Downie Just Taught Us About Dying...And Living

OMG I could not stop balling my eyes out after reading that story.....going through my own personal bereavement now, not human death; the death of my own marriage.  Sorry for TMI but I had to post this after doing so on my FB page.

Grace, Too ..... may we all receive it. Whatever you believe in.

  2. so I heard an interview on the radio early this AM with Rob O'Neill, former Navy SEAL. Most of you here should know his story. (....and, yes, I'm aware of his controversy with the OBL kill shot)

He made a very distinct observation after being asked about the 12 y/o suicide bomber who killed scores in Turkey at the Kurdish wedding. (may God rest their souls). O'Neill's comments: here in the US, we have parents/society teaching their kids about transgender, safe spaces, & micro-aggressions. In the Sharia version of Islam, they are teaching (indoctrinating) their kids to hate the infidel and to glorify/sacrifice these children as they carry out mass killings with detonation of remote controlled suicide vests. Thus (....now my words: here, we (mostly) respect/value human life; there: the grooming & sacrifice of these child warriors is a path to Paradise to be celebrated, with no concomitant value of others' human existence.

So I then recalled a song from an album which came out in 1989, the junior year of my college days. The lyrics are chilling now in their applicability to current events. The words do not line up 100% literally as they contain a bit of an agnostic bent; however, please read/listen and judge for yourself:

I welcome any rational discourse, certainly, in response to this OP

  3. Yeah in the article it's "round of golf"

The guide also discourages staff from inviting others to play a “round of golf,” which assumes “employees have the financial resources/exposure to a fairly expensive and inaccessible sport.”

utter insanity and a perversion of generally accepted language - now being hijacked by the uber microaggressive

so a bit of my own connection to the Hip; I grew up as a late teen weaned on the Hip through obvious media like CFNY then went away to 4 yr University not far from Cornwall & Kingston. This location offered me great exposure to the then must-have Montreal stations like CHOM, where my diet of the Hip was filled.

I then got into the Brit guitar/art/shoegaze rock revolution of The Smiths, Stone Roses, Oasis, Echo & the Bunnymen, Roxy Music, James, Joy Division/New Order, The Housemartins, The The, Slowdive, Ride, Lush, and the Madchester scene. I have a great ongoing collection to The Smiths via Johnny Marr and his solo work if anyone is interested, please PM me.

This post, however, is a true homage to Gord & the Hip. Thanks for making my developmental years very memorable.

first song ever heard: "Grace, Too" - live from Detroit Cobo Hall.

  5. Guess he can be part of the rebuild there when their aging team gets rid of all their old vets and blows it up...Sabres and Rangers are heading on two separate tracks, he picked the wrong one, but I think it had more to do about his "celebrity status" and endorsements than hockey, because I don't think anyone in their right mind looks at the overall picture of the Sabres and Rangers and then picks the Rangers.

    excellent take

  6. Agree, In order for any major player to come to Buffalo they are going to have to overpay! Same goes for the Bills. Buffalo is not very high on many players wish list in either sport.

not always necessarily. Vesey might just be a big city guy and saw a bigger role for himself on the Rags. Think of it a big fish in a little pond and vice versa.

  7. What type of culture? Different races? Food? Concerts? Art museums? What?

If we're talking a "feel" or "vibe", then I agree. Cities like LA, Chicago, DC have a different feel to them you could never find anywhere else.

and where else can you find Mighty Taco, Jim's, Ted's, Duff's, Gabriel's Gate, and a coterie of other superb Bflo food?

  8. 1.  Yes and yes.  If you're in serious trouble in Buffalo, he's on the short list.

    2.  If you knew Cambria's history, you'd know how much funnier that pun is.  He rose to prominence as Larry Flynt's lawyer, and his firm has many major clients in the porn industry.

    thanks 11 !

re: #1: I forgot Cambria repped Pat Kane - that should have told me something

re: #2: I was totally unaware of Cambria's involvement in the "adult entertainment" biz; indeed, that makes my pun funnier

  9. yikes -

anyone know Cambria's bona fides & if he has the chops to get Kane off? (....no pun intended)

anyone have inside info on GMTM's potential efforts to work the phones and ship him out? (N.B., I'm not advocating that, just asking)

  10. not sure if anyone saw this gem or if it was already posted upthread - from Allan Muir of SI.com:

8:13 pm: Tim Murray is the greatest. The Sabres GM doesn't even thank the home town fans that pack the FNC for the draft before making his pick, winger Alex Nylander. Very surprised the Sabres didn't go defense here, but Nylander is far from a sketchy pick. He's the sort of talent who can pull you out of your seat with his dangles and leave goalies checking their gloves for holes with his deadly accurate shot. Going to make for some fun games between the Sabres and the Leafs, who will dress Alex's brother William.

  11.

So glad to read about the positive coverage of the Queen City's ability to host big events like this....very proud as a devoted ex-pat. You guys know my roots run deep and I am very engaged like we all are here. I sense something bigger and better on the horizon, both on and off the ice

  12. Bono does some fine charity work. He's truly a great humanitarian. That doen't make his band good and it doesn't mean everyone has to overlook his Lebron complex either though. Actually Bono is significantly less douchey than Lebron. Bono is more like Ben Afleck level annoying without the obvious flaw of being a masshole.

I realize this sidebar convo about music, Bono, & U2 has somewhat hijacked this thread, but I have to say this: given the absolute subjective basis of one's like or dislike for a certain band or type of music, I could honestly care less if you like U2 or not; to each his/her own. But your bizarre Bono/Lebron/Affleck comparison is an off the wall non sequitur.
