‘“When people hear about media consolidation, it’s hard for them to understand why they should care,” Thompson said by phone. “Well, this is why it matters. When one company controls your Internet, your telephone and your cable TV, then you’re over a barrel.”’

Beyond the basics of bickering between Time Warner, MSG
‘In a word: money. Time Warner officials say MSG has twice reneged on a deal that would have seen the fee to air MSG networks go up 6.5 percent and now is demanding a 53 per-cent increase. MSG officials say Time Warner’s assertions are “gross mischaracterizations” but refuse to discuss the hard numbers involved in the negotiations. The two sides had been negotiating privately for about two years. In mid-December, about two weeks before the last contract expired, the battle went public, and the acrimony has only increased since then.’
Sabres, Vanek feel the sting of latest defeat to Islanders
‘”It’s a tough one,” said Sabres goalie Jhonas Enroth, who made 36 saves. “We weren’t really ready from the start. We didn’t play as good as we can or as good as we have to do on the road.”‘
Gerbe strives to ‘be great’ on and off the ice
‘”Just being there in the overall environment, I just kind of found myself and found my rhythm there and stuck with it,” said Gerbe, who became close with team chaplain Father Tony Penna, who has since become director of campus ministry. “He’s someone I still keep in very close contact with. He’s the first one that kind of brought religion to me. It’s always been in me, I’ve always had faith, but I’ve never practiced it. I’ve never went out of my way to work on religion. I think that’s something that he helped me with.”‘

Islanders beat Sabres 4-2
‘The Islanders got another goal against the Sabres by firing a puck off the back wall. That happens just way too much to this team, they don’t ever look prepared for it.’
Opportunity lost
‘The loss was Buffalo’s eighth straight on the road, setting a new franchise record in this dubious category. The previous mark of seven games was achieved twice back in 1970. The Sabres haven’t won away from the First Niagara Center since December 2 in Nashville.’

‘Finley (6’8”, 260 lbs., 6/29/87) joins the Sabres for his third recall this season after making his NHL debut in early December. In his two previous recalls, he appeared in three games for the Sabres.’
