”One wants to bring back the fever of hockey”

‘For him as for the Sabres, the key will pass by the heat, says it: “The talent is not enough any more. All the matches are tight now. If you want to gain, you must be the team which works most extremely.”’

Opening night stirs fond memories

‘"It’s been a long time since we’ve played a game that really counted in the standings," Butler said. "This whole week, I think everyone is starting to get that itch, kind of get that feeling that everyone’s really ready to start the season."’

Spacek returns to town with new team

‘"You live here for three years, it’s like your family," he said. "It’s always tough to leave. I had it set up where my son went to school. My wife had lots of friends. I love to play here, but it’s a job and you’ve got to move on."’

Sabres season preview

‘Buffalo has its question marks, too, but the Sabres are essentially adding two actual hockey players that last year were ghosts. Jason Pominville is going to have a much better season, guaranteed. Why? Because his struggles were more about not shooting the puck in gaping goal mouths, something you can practice in the offseason.’

Stafford Practices with Fourth Line. Myers will play

‘Tyler Myers was working out with Henrik Tallinder today in place of Toni Lydman, who is dealing with a hand injury. Lydman was skating with the team but just as an extra. He will not play. Lindy Ruff said that Myers will make his NHL debut tomorrow against the Canadiens. “He’s played well. Maybe started a little slow, but his last few games played very good hockey for us so he’s earned it. He’s earned the right to play, he’s played as good or better than other players.”‘

Myers to start in season opener

‘At 19 years and 245 days old, Myers is tied with Lee Fogolin (Oct. 10/74) as the 16th youngest player to suit up in a season opener for Buffalo. There have been 23 teenagers in total to accomplish the feat, with five players doing it twice.’
