Sabres looking for more help from defense

‘“I wish we had more (goal scoring) from our back end,” Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. “I think that’s an area that we can improve in. That’s an area that we’re going to continue to work in.”’

Ruff’s line tinkering pays off for Sabres

‘"I liked the fact that Kennedy and Grier were real good down low in the first period and felt the Roy line really struggled in the first period," Ruff said after Saturday’s game. "So I just flipped wingers on a hunch and those guys did a good job. I thought Kennedy was really good down low and Thomas and Michael were doing a good job finding holes."’

Sabres rediscover offense against Flyers and Canes

‘For two periods against the Carolina Hurricanes, it appeared as if the Buffalo Sabres were once again reverting back to their sluggish ways. If it weren’t for Ryan Miller’s heroics in the nets, the Canes would have been on their way to a blowout.’

Miller shows ‘Canes, Brind’Amour no love as Sabres rally

‘"It’s huge," defenseman Henrik Tallinder said. "If we didn’t win this game [Friday’s] game wouldn’t have been so big. Now it’s huge for us. We got four points out of four."’

Ruff pleased with Rivet, Gaustad news

‘"He’s doing better," Ruff said. "He’s pretty sore but the good news on him is that it isn’t as bad as first indications looked like."’

Sabres’ top threats aren’t too threatening

‘The Sabres have $22.7 million locked into their five-highest paid forwards and through the first 22 games this season they combined for a grand total of 24 goals. It’s not exactly the bargain they had in mind for Black Friday.’

Sabres score 5 in third, beat Hurricanes 5-1

‘“That was probably the turning point of the game,” Brind’Amour said about being robbed by Miller. “If we go up 2-0, it’s a way different game. Right at the end of the period and short-handed, that would probably deflate them instead of giving them a big lift.”’
