Sabres need complete team effort again

At the start of last season, no one paid any attention to Lindy Ruff’s squad, but at the end of the hockey year when the Sabres came within one win of playing for the Stanley Cup, everyone took notice.

Sabres open new season against familiar foes

‘Briere agreed the memories of the loss still sting, but he wondered whether opening against the defending champions might be beneficial. “Hopefully … if we give it all we have this year, we’ll be the ones raising the banner next year,” Briere said. “We’ve got to use it as motivation.”‘

Paille assigned to Rochester

'The deadline for final rosters is 3 p.m. Tuesday.'

Paille Sent Down; Pens Claim Thorburn

'Tim Connolly was told to stop working out by team doctors. Connolly had been suffering headaches while exercising. There is some good news for Connolly as some of his baseline tests are coming back normal. This is a good sign for him according to Lindy Ruff.'

Sabres demote Paille to minors

'The move was made to allow Paille time to continue developing in Rochester, Buffalo's American Hockey League affiliate. The Sabres first-round pick in the 2002 draft, Paille had a goal and an assist in six preseason games with Buffalo.'

Penguins claim Chris Throburn off waivers from Buffalo

'He led Rochester in goals, tied for third on the club in scoring and ranked fifth on the team in penalty minutes. Thorburn also appeared in two games last season with the Sabres, recording one assist and seven penalty minutes.'

Sabres are back for more

'"Teams will be prepared (to play us)," center Daniel Briere said. "We'll have to be better prepared."'

Dumont gives Preds another big-time scorer

'There's one big difference between J.P. Dumont's former city of play and his new one. "The weather is more enjoyable here, that's for sure," said the former Buffalo Sabre, wearing summer street clothes, no parka in sight.'

Sabres get roster to 22, waive Thorburn

'Thorburn will report to Rochester today if he clears waivers. He would join defenseman Andrej Sekera, who was demoted over the weekend. That move cemented Nathan Paetsch as the Sabres' seventh defenseman.'
