October 5, 1979

The Sabres trade Rene Robert to the Colorado Rockies for offensive-minded defenseman John Van Boxmeer, who would four years later be lost in the waiver draft to the Quebec Nordiques, who would become the Colorado Avalanche. Got it? It is the first move new coach, general manager and director of hockey operations Scotty Bowman makes to break up the Sabres of the 70s and put his own stamp on the team.

Despite a leg injury to Dominik Hasek that knocks him out of the home-opener at HSBC Arena, the Sabres beat the Chicago Blackhawks, 4-2. Youngsters steal the day: Mika Noronen plays admirably under pressure, J.P. Dumont scores fives minutes into his first game in a demonic goathead sweater and Maxim Afinogenov nails the game-winner early in the third.

It's the return of NHL hockey as the Sabres defeat the New York Islanders 6-4 in the home-opener at HSBC Arena before just under 16,000 fans. Alexei Zhitnik and Miro Satan are booed every time they touch the puck -- the little Zhithead even scores a goal when he beats Ryan Miller on an innocent shoot-in from center ice. Danny Briere answers 45 seconds later to restore a two-goal Buffalo lead. Briere has two goals and so does Max Afinogenov, including the clincher into an empty net.
