In Game 1 of the quarterfinal round at the Aud, John Van Boxmeer scores the winning goal and Don Edwards makes 17 saves as the Sabres shut out the Blackhawks 5-0. The Sabres score four power play goals. Edwards' heroics come one week after Bob Sauve records the first shutout in team playoff history. On this night, it's Edwards' turn in Scotty Bowman's goaltender rotation.

In another Game 1 of the quarterfinal round at the Aud, Minnesota's Steve Payne stuns the Sabres by scoring at 22 seconds of overtime to give the North Stars a 4-3 win and a 1-0 lead in the series.
