  1. Maybe, but next season can't look or feel anything like this one. It just can't. No team is accidentally this bad. The mere attempt and design to win should mean enough points to get them comfortably away from last place. Not to mention the arrival of McDavid or Eichel! God help any fan who cheers for losses next season for an improved draft slot. It's got to be about winning every time out, even if they're out of the playoffs.

    This.

It's about winning from this point forward. The tear down is over...the rebuild is on.

  2. Based on Buffalo sports history, I expect the Sabres to finish 29th after getting at least 3 points in the next two games.

After the disaster, GM Tim Murray has a meeting with Ted Nolan in his office. Maybe it goes something like this:

TM: "Come on in Ted, but don't take a seat because this is going to be brief. Ted, do you understand what we are trying to do this season?

Ted Nolan: " What do you mean Tim?"

TM: Did you notice all the trades and moves I made were designed for us to finish last?

Ted Nolan: "No Tim, I had no idea what you were doing."

TM: "Well Ted get your dumb ass out of this office because you are fired you freaking idiot!!!"

Ted: "But I thought winning those last three games would help us evaluate our talent. It is about taking pride in finishing 29th. What don't you understand Tim?

Nolan leaves, door slams. Sabres history is made.

Seriously, Nolan has the chance to go from one of the most beloved coaches in Sabres history in his first stint with the club to the most reviled in his second (and last).

  3. If we don't get McDavid after all this torture, it's pointless.

It's always been about Eichel, IMO. Even with a 30th place finish there is still only a 20% chance of landing McDavid. He's icing on the cake (and, yes, who I and everyone else want). Last place at least secures Eichel. McDavid is a lottery draw either way and, if you were banking on getting him after this torture, you're just setting yourself up for more heartache. The "consolation prize" is finishing 29th and only having a low percentage draw for either McDavid or Eichel. If Arizona wins the shart, it's back to hoping for a lottery draw for Arizona just to land Eichel. Embrace if Eichel, rejoice if McDavid.

Interesting.  I think I will be rooting for wins even if the team is not playoff-bound next year.  I will be looking to see a team stick together and cohere.

I will do the same, especially because of the change in lottery odds.

Ditto. There is no reason to support a tank after this race to hell ends. Here's to hoping for a Monday night clinching celebration.

  4. I apologize to all of the anti-tankers for this topic. In the event that we finish 29th, who do you feel is most responsible? Is it Ted Nolan, Murray, Maloney and Regier, or someone else? You might also think that no one is to blame and stuff happens.

    The hockey gods...

What's to criticize?  Since the full season lockout, the Loafs have followed a consistent pattern: win a lot of games for the 1st ~50 and then lose even more after the switch flips.  That they followed that exact same pattern, but intentionally this time is mockable far more than criticizable.

    Bunch of gutless wonders.

    Is anyone to blame?

The threads are all the same.

    Is anyone to blame?

    The board, it is aflame.

    Is anyone to blame?

    The board, it is aflame.

    Is anyone to blame?

It seems like just a game.

    Is anyone to blame?

    Blame the hockey gods.

We can never have nice things.

    McEichel bye-bye...

    Buffalo curse lives.

    Can't even win at losing.

    Next Crosby is gone.

    Twenty-ninth just sucks.

    Lottery only chance now.

    Percentage is low.

  5. Yep. We have nowhere to go but up from here. As much as I am looking forward to the possibility (I will not jinx it by not including possibility) of McEichel I am looking just as forward to everyone from management to the fans knowing that this is it. No more tanking. No more accepting (and hoping for) last place finishes.

That excites me as much as the thought of any one player coming here.

Amen! As much as it sickens me to ever pull for Carolina, a regulation loss on Monday would mean that everyone could finally exhale. It would be fantastic for the fans to be able to actually cheer for the team to win on Saturday and rid themselves of a year's plus worth of pent up frustration. It would be a well-deserved party and the tankers & anti-tankers could finally kiss and make up.

  6. Anybody else starting to think that keeping Neuvirth might be the move? Obviously he is the only thing keeping this tank from finishing strong. And the tank should remain the number one priority. But we also need a backstop moving forward, and he is really starting to look like a NHL goaltender. Maybe his handling this year, the confidence instilled by Murray, and the realization now that he's a true number 1, has honed his mental game. He's always had the physical tools. Similar arc to his ex teammate Varlamov. I know he's a FA, but there is an advantage to having a window of contract negotiations for the remainder of the year.

Why can't GMTM spin him off for an asset(s) now, preserve the tank, & tell Neuvirth on the way out the door, "This helps our future...we're coming for you this summer. We want you to be our #1 when we turn things around next year."?

  7. I don't know why, but this one just suddenly took me by surprise. He's been gone for years and off the air for many more. He was great. Really great.

Agreed and that's why I posted that picture. Check out the links below. I think you'll be glad that you did. Close your eyes and let them take you back in time. Beautiful...from Ted's dulcet tones to the period music. Enjoy... B-)

  8. This might not be the prettiest picture, but it was was hockey at its most beautiful. Today was my grandmother's 100th birthday. She is a big Canuck fan and my cousin got this jersey made and arranged for it to be signed by all the Canucks.

Wow! That is absolutely awesome on all counts. :)

    I submit this darling picture...

  9. Stanley Cup finals... superior in every way to the Superbore.

Well, that's more or less a given. You do have a minimum of four games in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Super Bowl is much more likely to produce a clunker in a one game winner-take-all scenario.

  10. Bring him back. He would be an asset.

Why in the world would he sign with the Sabres?! They reportedly were ready to back up a Brinks truck to his house and he declined.

    http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/10/28/report-sabres-were-prepared-to-make-vanek-highest-paid-player-in-nhl/

He made faces and stuff. Ridiculous!

    Gas?

Vanek isn't coming back end of story. I still think he replaces Heatley at the end of the season. Buffalo actually has a better chance at Heatley since Murray and Danny were both with Ottawa. Not that I want Heatley but Murray is going to make some sort of moves or the fans are gonna be pissed if it's the same squad like this season. I'm all for one more. $hit year if we have a solid shot at McDavid. But that's just me. A player like McDavid doesn't come around that often.

+1...elite, franchise changer. There's no guarantee that the Sabres would be picking first overall but, man, would he look good in a Buffalo sweater.
