Let's see.  14 playoff teams.  Looking at the bottom 14 picks of the first round of every draft since 2010, we see the following Pro Bowlers:

    2010: 4/14

    2011: 4/14

    2012: 5/14

    2013: 7/14

    2014: 4/14

    2015: 1/14

    2016: 2/14

    2017: 4/14

    2018: 3/14

    2019: 1/14

    2020: 1/14

2019 and 2020 players haven't had much chance to make the Pro Bowl.  For the other 9 seasons, we have 34/126, or 27%.  Our own Bills are 1/2 in that time (Shaq Lawson, Tre White).

I was already on board with trading, but this even further cements my decision.

Excellent research, but what about the percentage chance that a starting QB misses significant time during a season? And don't forget the third round compensation pick we'll get from losing Trubisky in the off-season to a big contract.

I'm taking the Trubisky insurance policy now over a 1 in 4 chance the pick becomes a Pro Bowler 3 to 5 years from now. So would Beane. Beane knows that he'd lose the locker room if he traded Trubisky. It would be him admitting that the team is Allen and just a bunch of other dudes. And it's not. The defense and the running game should be noticeably better this year from last.

Well the NFL differs from the NHL where really good players can be had at the end of the 1st round.  Tre White, Brandon Aiyuk, Josh Jacobs, Greg Rousseau ?, Lamar Jackson, Calvin Ridley.  The list goes on.  I’d have to think long and hard about passing up an opportunity to draft another one of those guys for a guy you never want to see the field.

What are the odds that a late first rounder becomes a Pro Bowler, versus the odds that a starting QB gets injured? The 2021 Bills have the potential to be something special, possibly in the class of the 1964 or 1990 teams. Until Buffalo wins its first Super Bowl, I'm always going to prioritize the present over the future.

  3. Trading the best backup in the league at the most important position in football, on a Super Bowl contending team, for a future late first rounder?

Only on a Sabres message board would fans rather collect first round draft picks than win games.

Did everyone forget that UFA signings are almost always terrible?  Like one to two years in everyone is asking why we signed this guys. Skinner, Okposo, Eakin.  At least most of not all of these are just bottom six, bottom pairing scrubs.

You draft and develop your stars. Sure we are unloading ours but it wasn’t working.  Now is time for the next crew.  Cozens, Mitts, Quinn, Rosen, next years 2 firsts. It’ll take time and it’s gonna suck but that’s how you build a hockey team.

Agreed. Drafting and trading is how you should expect to put together your starting goalie, top 3 defensemen, and top 6 forwards. Free agency is for the rest of your roster or for overpaying on that one guy who puts you into Stanley Cup contention. Hayden is actually a good signing. No need for me to be negative about EVERYTHING.

I remember feeling like that around this time when ROR was being auctioned off.

In reality what was happening was Botterill was desperately trying to cobble together a deal out of the ashes of offers he had previously turned down.

The difference being that the Pegulas forced a deadline on Botts to get a deal done before paying O'Reilly his bonus. There's no impending deadline in this situation. I don't consider free agency to be that deadline.

Eichel is a piece that could dramatically shift the balance of power in the West. That will hopefully frighten enough teams (LAK, Anaheim, Minny, Vegas, etc.) to trigger a bidding war over the next few days.

Krebs and Korzack are 2 pieces I would demand in return. Add from there.

Yes, my approximate Vegas package is Krebs, Korczak, Tuch, and a 2022 1st. My approximate Minnesota package is Rossi, Addison, Boldy, and a 2022 1st. I don't think any other teams are serious trade partners. The Rangers, Ducks, and Kings are expecting us to gift them Eichel.

Agreed.  Seriously, how did we get here?  In a salary cap era it is pretty unbelievable to have missed the playoffs for this long AND run out probably one of the worst Sabres teams since the tank for next season.

They are the absolute champion of minimizing the assets they posses.  There are so many smart hockey minds out there.  Just so frustrating seeing GM after GM continue setting this franchise back.

You know the answer: The Fracker and the Gold Digger. Aspergery Terry and Lil' Kim.

No, it’s your take on stats that completely ignores personality, motivation, and how he works as a teammate that is the awful take.

the guy is beta as hell and now he’s a leader. That’s a problem

his stats will likely get better if he is a younger second line center for some other team. And they won’t pay him 8 million for it without suffering somehow

So you're saying Reinhart is too slow and has character issues. Fans were saying the same thing about O'Reilly before they ran him out of town.

So it sounds pretty likely the deal is G Devon Levi, F Aleksi Heponiemi and a 2022 conditional 1st.

That’s not a good return for the player Samson is, especially in division. Feels like Adams and Co rushed the hell out of this deal thinking they HAD to trade one of Samson or Jack before the end of draft night.

Heponiemi is the most exciting part of this. The conditions on the Florida deal better be as simple as him playing for them period. If it’s lottery protected I’ll give it an eye roll because then you traded one of your best players for zero piece that “hurt.” Heponiemi should be in the lineup next season but I don’t know a ton about him other than nobody seems excited about him.

That is the strongest internet rumor so far. ***** unreal. No Lundell, Tippett, or Denisenko.

If the return for Reinhart is Levi, a mediocre prospect and a conditional first he should be fired immediately.  He gave me hope with the Risto trade, but there must have been a bidding war between Philly and Montreal.  Here left to his own devices he crapped the bed again.

I'm 100% with you, dude. Any return package not involving Lundell is a complete FAIL.

There were no staff reductions pre pandemic.   If I’m wrong, tell me what and when they were.

I thought the Pegulas downsized non-player staff before the pandemic. Because I can't find proof of this online, I'll retract my statement. Apparently last year's purge seems like several years ago to my middle-aged brain. The past 10 years of Sabres hockey have become a giant blur to me.

What steps did they take to reduce spending on the Sabres pre-pandemic?  I don’t recall any changes more than 12 months ago.

Reductions in the scouting staff and various management positions. It's all good, though, because Kimmy needs her yacht!

There is a thread I started based on rosters from earlier this season. Buffalo actually led in number of players drafted that were on current rosters. Didn’t put any quality of picks in my summary, just let everyone form their own interpretation of why.

Poor asset management is a big reason. I'm looking at you, Tim Murray.

In a weird way it’s almost comforting that huge changes are finally coming, kind of like how back during the tank at least there was a goal/ end in sight (as wrong as that was). This might be the most entertaining off season we’ve seen in a long time.

You mean like in The Room movie kind of way?

Nothing changes in a positive way until the Fracker and the Golddigger sell the team. Eichel's injury comments suggest that the franchise is even more messed up than we ever thought imaginable. I have been advocating for a pressure campaign to force the Pegulas to sell. No tickets and no merchandise until they sell the team to someone who will keep them in Buffalo.

You ***** kidding me? I have a big problem with a lot of the picks. It hasn't gotten better in 2017-2020 either. I can name 4 picks over 3 drafts that are complete WTF!

    Laaksonen instead of Farrance

    Johnson instead of Robertson

    Samuelsson instead of Berggren

    Quinn over Rossi or Jarvis.

And I am a random mofo on a computer figuring out in real time they ***** up. This team has its head up its ass.

The Quinn selection was a ***** disgrace. At this point, I vote for Duane Steinel and Melody Martin as co-GM's. Those two couldn't do any worse than this parade of clowns and would probably do much better.
