  1. I warned you guys...

    not to engage him.

Listen, and understand. That user is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are retarded.

  2. I like the reuse plan for the sky way. Innovative, forward-looking. Transforming the top deck into park space is in line with Buffalo's great park heritage. But invariably, the quite-high volume of 43000 vehicles per day, 2800 of which are trucks, needs a suitable alternative- that's the heart of the challenge.

  3. Do you work for city hall, by chance? Because this is exactly the type of logic I expect those fools to use.

    Do you just dislike Pegula?

As far as your valuation goes, I just think you're being short-sighted. It's about attracting people to the area, having something unique and a reason for people to go more often. Maybe having rinks in the city allow the development of more WNY talent. Maybe it's a stepping stone to some new programs. Maybe it helps UB get a D! team if it ever decides to go that route. The whole idea is to help bring in money from outside the city, from outside the Buffalo area with events, not just recycle money from people who already live here.

You say there's plenty of other places to put rinks, I say there's plenty of other places to put condos. There's a ton of office space already, and more could easily be developed. If the Paladino proposal gets it, it's just another example of Buffalo leadership thinking small and short-term, rather than big and long-term.

You and I are on precisely the same page, with one exception: the Ruff's System thread taught me not to engage him. Don't subsidize housing for rich people, subsidize something that people can use, something that draws lots of people. The increased crowds will bring the money.

I wonder if the size of Pegula's investment is enough to raise the eyebrows and curiosities of other potential investors. It certainly sets a good example.

  4. Public use is what we're looking for.

If that was the stated goal of the City's request-for-proposal, then this should be a slam dunk in the Sabres' favor. Apartments and office space for rich people on land earmarked for public use? No thanks, let's get the little kids on the ice for open skate.

  5. So here's the breakdown:

    Sabres investment: $123 million

    Paladino investment: $64 million

    Sabres hotel rooms: 200

    Paladio hotel rooms: 140

    Sabres retail space: 15900

Paladino retail space: 8600+some in the hotel

    Sabres parking spaces: 965

    Paladino parking spaces: 1089

    Sabres others:

Double ice rink on 7th floor (110,000 sqft)

    Fitness center (12,000 sqft)

    Paladino others:

110,000 square feet of office space

42 luxury apartments (1200-3000 sq ft each)

Sabres timeline: Ice open Sepetember '14, Hotel open May '15.

    Paladino timeline: Open December '14.

    Opinion:

Sabres win hands down. They're investing twice as much. Their ice rinks will create jobs and bring in tourism dollars. Their space is soo much more public-use oriented (more retail space, ice rink space, fitness center) than the other plan, which is really important in that location. It enhances the notion of hockey heaven by building a new regional destination and the services to support it. It looks like Pegula is building for the people (ice rinks, retail space) and Paladino is building for wealthy private use (office and luxury apartment space).

I think it's more useful to the city to create something new and publicly accessible in that space, be it ice rinks or a different attraction, instead of constructing new office space or apartment space when there's plenty of other nearby buildings that can be renovated into great office space and apartment space (for cheaper!).

  6. Love the Sabres' proposal. Total investment at 65% of what it cost to build FNC (in 2012 dollars).

I think Paladino's facade choices match the neighborhood better, but they also feel less distinctive than the Sabres' proposal.

Also this would generate business and familys to move to Buffalo. In turn maybe lure some potential FA.

And yes, as a recreational hockey player who's open to moving back to the Buffalo area, the prospect of a new double sheet downtown only makes me want move there more.

  7. He has been playing great for awhile now, and even took it to another level with the arrival of his fellow countryman. Soon he will start putting some bombs in the net and he will be all we could have asked for.

He leads the Sabres in ice time with 23:20. He leads the D in scoring with 30 points and shots with 130 in 59 games. He has 9 points and is +6 in his last 12 games. Solid.

  8. Or is this like getting called to the principals office and everyone goes oooooooohhhhhh

This, except Ruff isn't the prinicpal, he's the teacher, and Cody's staying after class to work on his arithmetic.

Because the team's been on the road and playing games, Hodgson only had his first full practice with the team within the last week(end?). We're playing important hockey and he wants to catch up to the system, not to mention contribute on the stat line. And who knows, maybe that's the first time Ruff has gotten a chance to work with Cody one on one on the ice.

  9. Word on the street is that after succumbing to Boston's physical style of play, the Canucks developed an almost palpable size inferiority complex. ESPN analysts believe they were desparately trying to make a deal for Steve Ott of Dallas, but when that didn't happen, they made late moves for Samual Pahlsson and Zack Kassian.

Bringing in Pahlsson (and already having Sedin, Kesler, and alternate captain Malhotra) meant that Hodgson would see even less playing time, making the blue chipper expendable in the short term for another large body in Kassian.

Luke Schenn, talented as he may be, wouldn't have fit with the moves Vancouver thought they needed to make: adding size up front on the checking lines.

  10. Played pickup for an hour and a half instead of eating lunch today, feelsgoodman. Now that I'm starving, I'm going to leave work early to get me some Chick Fil A before meeting up with the girl later for a free movie screening at Paramount. Bonus: I'll beat traffic up to Hollywood.

  11. hey ... every other friday off works just fine, right?

Hells yes. It's 26 three day weekends a year. 26. So if you have things you like to get done on the weekend (camping, chilling, chores, etc) or want extra time to do weekday stuff (errands/shopping/banking, etc), it works out great. Plus my bosses are flexible about when I actually take those Fridays off. So if I'm going vacation, I can stack consecutive Fridays off (by moving one from a previous week). That allows me to have ten consecutive days off from work at the expense of only 4 days of vacation.

I'm exempt, but I make overtime for hours worked. So occasionally, I'll grab overtime pay for working a regular shift on a Friday that I would of had off. Pretty sweet concept- overtime pay for working regular hours on a weekday.

    ---

Bonus F'N Fantastic Friday fact: tonight's game will be the first live Sabres game televised since I got my 60" plasma a few months ago.

Edit: love the thread concept. Buffalo fans are often quick to be downers (see also: regular Complaint thread exists years before regular Fantastic thread). Love the uplifting lovefest thread before the weekend.

  12. Couple good things.

-Just bought the car of my dreams (an immaculate Hemi Orange Challenger SRT8 six speed). Best anything ever.

-Sold old car private party for twice what dealer offered on trade in.

-Girlfriend comes home tomorrow from a three week trip:

---Told me to get plenty of rest and not make any plans for Saturday night or all day Sunday. Giggity.

---She doesn't know I bought the car- I've been keeping it as a surprise for when I pick her up at the airport.

-I have today off because I work a 9/80- meaning I can watch tonight's game live (here on west coast).
