I would give him more time to get stronger and gain more experience. Even if he ends up staying on the 4th line, he could be that 4C for a long time. He adds more offense than Larsson, Girgs, Sheahan, Eakin etc…

I would like him to become the faceoff guru, that would add to his value.

He may improve enough to be a solid 3C.

So how do you get 3 centers drafted 1st round into the line up? Jost and Krebs are young. I would take Jost before Krebs, can play Wing. Your making like all players on team move forward. There are at least 3 in Rochester who can make roster over the people on it now.

Think Krebs is odd man out but let camp decide that.

Middlestat is the one I am intrigued with.

If he can land a 4th position 1 dimensional defensive man to go with Powers than I would trade him for that. Just have to many players

Won't be upset if he stays now on 2.5 million, two way player now and two positions.

Center position might have some interesting competition next season.

Mitts, Tage, Cozens, Krebs, Jost (is he signed for next season?)

Would like at least one of those names stand out as a face off guy and a shutdown guy. We are missing that aspect.

Forgot the 3 Centers drafted last year. Two are knocking on the door REAL HARD

The rubber is going to meet the road with all of these guys (well maybe not VO as he might be jettisoned due to poor fit purposes) when their contracts are up.  Then your depth from smart drafting pays off.  Pay Mitts $5 mill (maybe $6?) as a bottom six depth scorer or replace him with a young player on an entry level contract.  Good problems to have for sure.

If Mitts not traded, you don't give contract, RFA, so you see what is offered out there to him. You can match or get lots of picks. He is cheap next year and Dahlin HAS to be signed after July 1st. Need room for trades to get better. Money isn't going to a guy who played 1 in 5 good years.

Jumping the gun a bit here.

Mitts is on a good stretch that we all hope can continue, but he promotion to 1C is driven by many factors, including his good play.   He is in the 1C role because Tage is hurt and DG jumbled things up in an effort to get 2 lines going.  The kids that played on the Cozens line are being sheltered and now on the 3rd line.    Good to see Mitts rise to the occasion.

Krebs has not given up.  He is playing in his first full season, he is close to being a rookie without being one.   His offensive production is down from most expectations but his role and the play of his wingers have something to do with that.   His point total for a 4C is better than any totals put up by more experienced 4C's such as Larsson and Lazar.

I never saw Krebs as a better raw talent than Mitts btw.  Krebs has work to do to get stronger and to improve his shot.

Krebs has to get faster too, won't be with us with 3 Centers drafted 1st round last year. If he could play winger, maybe he stays, but 1 dimensional position players won't stay on a 4th line. Jost is better for that right now. Krebs, no rush to trade, keep for camp and Injury right now. He won't be starting for Sabres next year on top four lines. For that matter Girgenson can be resigned too for flexibilty and 13 man in too if he wants to stay. Can play all positions if needed.

  5. On 4/10/2023 at 1:49 AM, Sabres73 said:

But the prospect that would replace him would be a rookie that would need a couple years to develop as well, so you're not getting much of a benefit overall for that move. I don't think he's that easily replaceable. Trade VO/Hinestroza/Jost before Casey is a better idea IMO

Hinestroza is a UFA. Jost is 4th line Center. If Middlestat stays, he is the 3rd line Center, proven that with 1st line play.

My thinking is Middlestat is traded cause we have two Centers who can come up. Middlestat brings in a good player.

Kulich or Savoie can man 3rd line Center next year. They can keep Krebs just in case and trade if Kulich or Savoie win spot in Preseason, then trade Krebs.

Jost was gotten mid season and has played well for Sabres. Good two way Center (1st round pedigree)

Olofsson won't be given away, had 28 goals. His shot is top line stuff but NOT a two way guy, streaky also. Probably work well on Third line with protection

    Olofsson   Middlestat/Kulich/Savoie   Rousek

If Middlestat stays then Jost and/or Krebs go in trades. Top two lines are made without a trade for Top 4 Winger.

No way Kulich and/or Savoie are not on roster next year

Could see Greenway  Savoie   Kulich line

You talking about the same Casey Mittelstadt who went from 25 points in his first season to 9 and a demotion to the minor leagues in his 2nd?

Krebs points per game may have dropped from his 1st season to his 2nd, but his game has not. His actual points, his +/- and his fancystats improved this year while his role, position and responsibilities got a lot tougher. He’s a better, more trustworthy hockey player than he was a year ago.

I don’t have a strong opinion as to which player will have a better career; certainly Casey has hit a stage over the past 40 games that Peyton is yet to approach and may never will, so Casey is in the lead. But the idea that Mitts was a vastly superior player at the same stage is odd to me. It’s certainly not something that is proven out by a better point per game rate.

They were/are both talented young hockey players finding their way, seeing some bumps and trying to carve out a role. I see nothing to suggest Krebs can’t make similar progress over his 2nd 120 NHL games as to what Mittelstadt did in his.

Krebs is done. Even if Middlestat traded, there are younger players that can play Center/Wing. Krebs has proven to be one dimensional position wise and only a Medicore Center at best. You think he gets to Cozens level? If NOT then he must go to someone else to develop. Too many prospects

I think statistically they were in pretty similar places at the same juncture of their careers.

I think eye-test wise Mitts was creating more offensively in his D4 season, but that’s largely because of how Donnie used him post-Ralph compared to how he uses Krebs right now.

I also think eye-test wise Krebs is far more advanced as a puckhound and in his defensive reads than Mitts was two years ago. And I look at how far Mitts has come since in those areas. SDS kinda used Krebs role between Girgs and KO to dismiss Krebs, when the fact of the matter is that it’s a plus. Krebs is getting 15 minutes a night in a primarily defensive role.

My take on Krebs is that his game is coming along nicely and I won’t be surprised to see him become a pace-pushing, 2-way, middle-6 forward.

Kinda like we’ve seen from Mitts.

At what other younger players expense? We have too many prospects we need to come up and Krebs numbers suck if you want to make playoffs.

Add to that he can't play Wing, Middlestat is far the better player if he stays Healthy.

Great year for Middlestat, I thought he was done when he failed to replace O'Reilly for 2nd line center. That usually destroys a career. He then got hurt two years in a row.

Right now, you could keep him but then Krebs needs to go in trade. Not sure he can go back to Rochester. No time for him to develop with what he has shown. Get more out of Savoie and/or Kulich.

  8. On 4/9/2023 at 1:18 PM, SDS said:

I will consider him to be an objectively marginal hockey player up until the point he isn’t. Given his pedigree and expectations, I am fairly certain the spot he holds on this roster is not on top of the passer list, but on top of the most disappointing player’s list.

Wasn't sure what you were saying on previous post.

Yes, Krebs failed this year. He was on third line did terrible. Placed on fourth line so Vets may get him better. Didn't work but a couple games. Krebs is too slow for NHL. Probably a great AHLer. Maybe it is cause he is thinking too much.

With all the young guys in Rochester, I would rather see them move up. Maybe the NHL could be snookered to a trade with Krebs. I would take 3-5 rounder.

The guys I would get rid of or NOT offer a Contract to are

    Olofsson trade

    Krebs trade

Okoposso don't sign, Get another vet younger and who will get you 20 goals two way player. Captain should be Tuch.

Girgenson I am unsure on, - 5, is that cause of Krebs and Okoposso not scoring? Good on PK. Maybe it is time to move on too

UPL, If he will stay in Rochester developing a year there and playing 75% of the games fine or trade him.

Personally don't want Willford canned at this point as a big part of the woes on D and on the PK can be attributed to the goaltending (primarily) and the focus on generating offense at nearly all times (secondarily).

Am also good with bringing Bales back if he wants to come back.

But, would need to hear a clear plan for how to improve the PP in '23-'24 before renewing the contract of either Ellis or the other guy that was an ECHL coach forever (whichever one was responsible for it).  Because that's been hot trash ever since Bob Wood left and the only reason it statistically didn't look horrible this year is the talent on the PP simply willed the 2 units to success for about 6 weeks towards the end of '22.

The entry is beyond horrible.  The structure is bad.  The movement is lacking.  etc, etc.

There is too much talent for the PP to be this bad again next year.

Play defense in the middle not the wings, Don't pass across the Goaltender, don't pass unless you see where your going. Just a lot you see on BAD days from many players, not just Bryson, Clague. Dahlin as GREAT as he is some games, still Brutal. Sorry the defense with TWO #1's should be near TOP of the League.

We can go that route but unless we go all in I'm more inclined to spread the money around on mid level guys that fill holes and roles and let the homegrown talent we already have be the core with the (eventual) big salaries.

This is why I'd go after a guy like Nosek. He's everything we wanted Cody Eakin to be but he wasn't. PK instantly improves.

That is fine but we need more scoring from other 3 lines or BETTER defense and two really good Goaltenders to keep scores 3 or under.

Something has to be different than this year. 91 pts, if we get that, NOT enough.

To me "We should fire the assistant coaches" is the ultimate in fans mindlessly needing someone to blame.

Do you have any idea of what any of our assistant coaches actually did, or didn't do, to contribute to the issues you listed? Yet you want someone to lose their job?

My favourite example of this is the abysmal offence of the 2021 Sabres. The forwards coach of that team was Don Granato, someone who clearly has plenty of insight about how to generate offence.

I think what I like about Kevyn Adams is how he does not seem to be driven by finding people to blame, or to sacrifice; his focus is on support and solutions.

Granto's strength was convincing players to play to their skill without getting Chastised for Mistakes. Bench coaches handle the schemes. So this years Offense Bench coach and Granto did well. Goalie coach did well? Penalty? Even Granto did terrible managing pulling goalies. MISSED the Playoffs with a Rookie coming in giving them a 4-2-1 record. Comrie since injury 5-1-1 yet other Goalies played. Missed Playoffs by 1-4 points depending on last two games.

Sabres SHOULD have been in playoffs, NOT on the players. On the GM trade deadline and on Coach/ Bench coaches. Giving Adams and Granto the pass!!!

I didn't really expect that to happen this year and I hope that doesn't derail the plan in a year or two.

But if he is "that guy," the other guy becomes way less important. As in either Comrie or Luukkonnen are fine for 25 handpicked games.

They only become issues if Levi is not "that guy."

Who outside of Buffalo remembers Ryan Miller's backup?

UPL could ruin your chance at Playoffs. How important now were the two BIG losing streaks!!!! Don't blame Comrie, he was 5-1-1 down the stretch from last Injury.

If traded , they better find another goalie prospect cause the cupboard will be pretty bare

You have a 21 year old Goalie, that is 10+ years. How bare is it? Goalie young now does nothing, never see the Field for 6 years or more. We need 5+ year NHL Goal tenders as backups for 7-8 years. 5 years from now worry about drafting or getting the next Levi ready.

Bringing in a vet goalie is also a risk.  How many goalies are traded for or purchased as free agents and do not live up to their billing?  It happens.  Improve the D, and the goalies will flourish.

If a Goalie for 5 years or more is 2.5 and .91, 25-28 years old they usually don't suddenly suck. Off year would be 2.75 .89. I can except that as a Backup. Your team plays defense more knowing this. A Veteran team will adapt!

That is fine, we don't NEED him. Go get Raanta, Hill or some of the other names mentioned.

Our 1st pick will be Top 15. Peterka is a HIGH valued Prospect still. Middlestat has become a Top 6 player for someone else. We have too many Prospects. Have to give 1st, Peterka, Krebs. We have players to move up or can get players.

Who has better???? All players acquired at trade deadline went for draft picks like Timo.

See protecting Savoie and Kulich, very high ceiling. Peterka had a year, fine player. Will be good, maybe great but I don't see that happening before Savoie or Kulich. Quinn is almost there, Krebs is NOT. Sabres don't have 2-3 years. Need to be in Playoffs next year and NOT a quick bounce out.

Clock is running, just like Josh, on Dahlin, Tage, Tuch, Skinner. At some point someone moves on to sign Kulich Levi, Savoie, Quinn.

Also yes on Levi, best Goalie in NCCA past two years but I would get a Good Goalie to play with him that is 26-30 years old. Split games this year. Let Levi develop to a 70-80% games. Next year, if successful, goes to 50-55 games.

They should absolutely go sign someone who can be a starting goaltender... if one is available.

I see people who want to annoint Levi here but in other threads talk about how "nothing is a given for next season".. damn right.  Nothing is a given.  Go get another goalie.

I can't tell whether it's a lack of essential instincts or a matter of lost confidence, but there were stretches of play this year where, in watching him, I just kept thinking to myself "he looks like he doesn't expect to stop the puck." And then Levi showed up and I was like "yuh, that's what it looks like when the goalie expects to stop the puck."

UPL can't handle rebounds at all

    UPL can't do Shoot Outs

Glove is average, no leg kick and side to side after watching Levi, way too slow.

He is BIG, that is it, so 1st shot hits him rebounds and hence why he won't make it.

Comrie was 5-1-1 since last injury. Gave Sabres a chance to win but one game and that was on Granto at 5-3, should have pulled Comrie. Instead 10 Goals occurred and TEAM quit. Not on Comrie.

Not sure your point there. Did Comrie not get enough looks cause of injury or performance? Comrie was 5-1-1 last 7 since injury yet UPL thrown in at times. One loss was more on Granto and Defense (10 goals, REALLY). Comrie had a Shutout down the stretch too, Only Anderson did that this year too.

If TEAM backs Comrie, be Ok backup only if Anderson stays too due to injury. Get rid of UFA's on team replace with 1-2 good freeagents and young guys called up from Rochester, you can keep things rolling. Only way to really make 3 Goalies work.

Prefer though Levi and Very Good Veteran here. Bye to UPL, Comrie waived to Rochester. Anderson phone dial if someone goes down.

Or Levi starts in Rochester waiting for one of them to grab the reins or get moved. I'd guess we'll see UPL and Levi and a bigger emphasis on team (forwards) defense.

Personally, I don't overload Levi. I probably max him out at 41 games (NHL [and AHL if necessary] combined) while his body is developing, he's getting accustomed to cross-country travel and managing time zone changes against his routines, 2-week long road trips, building up his dossier on shooters and they on him, and being a celebrity.

Then go for Saros if no Kulich or Savoie part of trade

If not then Raanta or Adin Hill

Levi is Starter or Backup, no Rochester. He is TOO good for Rochester.

** Be Ok if Levi starter and Comrie/Anderson backup for at least half a season. See if Comrie has anything, don't trust only Comrie. We can hide the younger guys in Rochester on call up when needed. Why Rochester exists, CLOSE.

Realize that other goalies have been had cheaper.  Few, if any of those, have been 1 of the best 3 goalies in the game and still under contract for multiple years.  He wouldn't be on the market because he absolutely wants out; he'd be on the market because they're retooling and are very high on Askarov.  Thing is, they can retool and bring Askarov in while Saros is still there.  The Sabres didn't get rid of Miller while he still had term left even though they were in the midst of a scorched earth tank.  They only traded him when he was on the verge of becoming an UFA.

IMHO the only way Saros gets traded now is if it's a "wow, we can't believe what we're getting offered for him" type of deal.  They don't NEED to trade him.  Not yet, at any rate.

Sabres won't trade Kullich, Savoie. If you can get Saros for combination of Peterka, Krebs, Jost, Middlestat, Jokararu, 1st pick would you do it? I would hands down.

Interesting that you wrote down coaching. I'm all in on Donny G, but i am not sold on Marty Wilford. I wish they had a more proven coach with him on the bench. But, the guy i'm wondering about is Mike Bales. Highly touted goalie coach, but none of our goalies have improved under him. Ullmark leaves for Boston and becomes a world beater. UPL didn't establish himself at all under Biles. Comrie had injuries but also this season is a wash on him. Maybe i'm alone on this but it doesn't seem like Bales' job should be safe.

Your not alone, bench coaches need replacing. Granto has made a difference but defense, power play, penalty kill and Goaltending need to get better. Some is personnel like Power Play, Penalty Kill. UPL inconsistent, seems like Coaching.

Ullmark got hurt again, why Sabres moved on from him. Comrie now in same boat, gets hurt a lot.
