This would almost be a dream come true but I have to say after 10 years I'm hesitant to believe it. How many times have we been given hope that this ship is turning around only to have those hopes be dashed upon the rocks.

Exactly how I feel. And even if the rumor is true I don't even know if Rutherford can fix this mess. It just seems like everything that the organization touches turns to ash.

  2. Are the Sabres are the worst organization in American professional sports (of football, baseball, hockey and basketball)? I don't really follow baseball but can't think of a football or basketball team worse than them. Maybe the Minnesota Timberwolves or the Charlotte Hornets are worse but I'm really having a hard time coming up with anything else.

  3. I don't love Krueger as a coach. He makes questionable lineup decisions and speaks gibberish to the media. However, I don't believe firing him is justified for a few reasons:

    1. He has barely coached 1 full NHL season.
    2. Injuries and COVID have ravaged the team.
    3. The team has had ***** puck luck so far. XGF numbers are far higher than actual GF. I believe I saw somewhere that a number of our players have been experiencing record low shooting percentages.
    4. If we fire him, then what? At a certain point it just seems like no degree of coaching expertise can help this organization. IMO the only thing that can save our franchise is a Lou Lamoriello.
      1. Also firing him so early furthers the notion among executives that the Pegulas go through coaches and GMs too quickly. Perhaps enough so that it rubs potential coaching replacements like Gallant, Boudreau and Julien the wrong way.

I think the organization should wait until the end of the season at least before firing him.

  4. I wasn't really bothered by the whole Skinner thing because I thought he was getting good chances.

However, putting Okposo in the lineup I can't abide. He is a black hole on both ends of the ice. He has hands that move like feet and feet that move like bricks. There is a direct correlation between when Okposo was put into the lineup and when the Eakin - Rieder line became bad. I don't care how much leadership he brings if he can't play NHL level hockey. Please spare us from 21.

  5. I don't agree with the people saying the tank was the worst blunder. Rather, I think the moves and structure around the tank are what put the Sabres in a downward spiral. I think tanking is an okay move if you have ...

    a) Patience - Tim Murray thought he could speed up the rebuild by trading all of our picks and prospects for NHL ready players. It backfired horribly -- I think the Evander Kane trade was just as bad as some of the other moves on the list.

    b) Scouting Capabilities - Look back on the 2013 - 2017 drafts. It is embarrassing how few non-first round picks have panned out for the team. Even our first round picks are rarely the best players around their draft position. Additionally, professional scouting would have (hopefully) prevented the team from signing Okposo and Moulson to huge contracts.

    c) Competent Executives - This one is sort of self explanatory. Tim Murray was a terrible GM and Botterill wasn't far behind.

I'm with you except the Staal thing.  He's was 'Meh" imho.

I'll also mention that Lazar is working his way into the hearts of Sabres fans.  I wrote in the Fix the Sabres thread that he, Risto and McCabe are the only 3 Sabres that have brought it every night and that is still true.

I think statistically the line was pretty good, but maybe the powerplays inflated their numbers. They also didn't get a ton of minutes so their success may have been difficult to notice. Regardless I look forward to seeing more.

  7. Notes:

    • Ullmark was great in the last period. Exactly what we needed.
    • Parking the bus in the third was not a good choice. Bad penalty from Hall at the end there too.
    • Okposo is not an NHL player. I'm willing to give him a few more games so he can work the rust off, but he is too slow to be a good forechecker/penalty killer. I'd rather see Tage, Mitts, or Asplund on the ice.
    • Really impressed by the Staal line tonight.

    I think the same?

Casey's salary last year was $832,00 and his qualifier was 105 per cent of what he made last year.

That said, with bonuses, Capfriendly says his total salary was $925,000 and his AAV was a shade under $1.5 million.

I'm not sure what that means exactly. @Taro Tperhaps?

Because Casey is considered to be in the minors, this contract does not affect our cap at all. Still have about $3.5 million in space, with a 12-forward, 7-defenceman roster that does not include Cozens at a shade under $900,000.

Maybe now he can afford a gym membership.

  9. I think GMKA is actively shopping Mittelstadt. Mittelstadt has no leverage in any contract discussion and would basically have to take anything within the 925k - 1.5 mil range Adams gives him. If a deal hasn't happened yet I have a hard time believing that GMKA isn't trying to trade him.

  10. NY winning the lotto seems undeserved. They get Kakko, Panarin, and now Lafreniere? And will continue to attract big name free agents because of location and market size? And have only been bad for 2-3 years?

Teams and their fanbases that have "taken their lumps," (Buffalo, Detroit, Ottawa, Winnipeg, etc) should have a better chance at first overall. Maybe the NHL could implement a rule where a team's lottery odds improve with each year they stay in the bottom 10 teams.

Oh god really? We're really going to do the Reinhart thing, again?

Trading Reinhart is a stupid idea because you'll never get back what he is. You'll just create another hole. I love how olofsson is the greatest thing ever but Reinhart sucks. I need a break.

Well I wouldn't be trading him for a bag of pucks... I think we could trade Reinhart and Mittelstadt for a 2C and a 2/3RW. We'd be creating depth by spreading Reinhart's value across the middle six.

  12. I think Adams should seriously consider trading Reinhart. While I wouldn't be actively shopping him, I don't think he belongs in the "core/untouchable" category. He's a smart player and an excellent passer, but brutally slow, meh defensively, and weak on the puck. I think Eichel could do just as well (or negligibly worse) with a player like Alex Tuch or Josh Anderson on the wing -- that is, a cheaper, faster, stronger, goal scoring winger.

I just find it hard to justify paying a player like Reinhart the $7,500,000 he'll demand. That type of money (in my mind at least) is reserved for players who can drive scoring on a line by themselves.
